I would like to something about BCDBOOT
jaclaz replied to Rbcc56's topic in Unattended Windows 10/11 Installation
Only to clarify, making a partition active doesn't touch at all the partition itself, what "make active" means actually "mark the partition as active in the corresponding MBR partition table entry (by writing 0x80 in the appropriate field)", it is essentially flipping a flag to allow the MBR code to know which partition boot record is to be chainloaded . On a GPT partitioned disk there is not really a MBR, its place is taken by a "protective MBR" that has only a table with a single entry with a special partition type (0xEE) that spans the whole disk and is there to tell older programs that they shouldn't touch the MBR partition table. -

Hi Ruthan, it sounds like you’ve been dealing with a pretty frustrating issue! It’s really confusing when the logs don’t show the expected results or when you're stuck trying to parse them. From what you’ve described, it seems like you're trying to work around some issues with measured boot logs and the boot repair process. One thing that might help is focusing on resolving the bootstat.dat issue first, since it seems to be one of the key causes of your boot repair loop. Have you tried clearing the bootstat.dat file manually using the recovery environment or the Command Prompt in WinPE? Sometimes that can break the loop. Also, regarding the NTBTLog and measured logs, if the tools you're using are failing to give you the details, you might want to try a fresh install of the Windows ADK tools, as they usually have the right utilities like PCPTool.exe and others for analyzing boot logs. I get what you're saying about not wanting the entire driver kit – you might only need the specific parts related to the boot process. Alternatively, it could be worth trying the "Offline" options in Autoruns from WinPE, though as you’ve mentioned, some entries may be locked down. Lastly, regarding merging files from the broken install with the old backup, I’d suggest carefully checking the system partitions and making sure everything is in sync before trying a merge, as it can get tricky. If you've got a system image or a restore point from before the issue started, it might be worth trying that too. Hope this helps or at least gives you another direction to go in! Let me know if anything else comes up or if you need more clarification.

Not sure about combining "modern" with XP, but I do use a version of Foxit Reader here. It was mentioned on page 11 in this thread - https://msfn.org/board/topic/176299-latest-version-of-software-running-on-xp/page/11/?tab=comments#comment-1159022 - it's definitely lighter than Adobe! I thought the Phantom version was a paid product? I've been using the free Reader. In any case you can run a newer version 9.1.0.5096 on XP, I've been using that for a little while now. Sadly it has been removed from the foxit web site, but you can still get it from https://www.filehorse.com/download-foxit-reader/34729/

I've just reproduced this in a virtual machine. I installed StartIsBack, ran Windows Update which installed KB5065429, rebooted and voila - the Start menu delay is also present in that build.

"Feature updates" versus System Reserved Partition?
lisefipumom replied to gerwin's topic in Windows 10
Oh, I totally get that! Dealing with older hardware and those never-ending Windows 10 updates can feel like a constant battle. It’s funny how working through these tech challenges kind of mirrors themes in literature, right? It’s like the perfect metaphor for human adaptability and innovation. If you’re into literature, you could totally explore something like "The Metaphor of Technology in Modern Narratives" or "Exploring Human Ingenuity Through Technical Challenges in Literature." It could make for some really interesting dissertation topics. But yeah, good luck with your setup—hopefully, it goes smoothly, whatever route you end up taking!) -

Well you can use TPM header for connection of ISA devices through ISA slot header to make modern PC able to use old soundcards for DOS, because all modern chipsets does not support needed DMA calls for PCI/ISA soundcards, or not even have such slots except few spencial boards, which still cannnot process these calls, but you can use ISA / PCI slot for other peaceful purposes. So its powerful interface. but last time when i checked it, 3 people on whole planet where able to do it, because it needs some additional signals / cables soldered to mainboard.. and Otherwise it my not broken Windows 10 through dart, there is access to Event logs too.. There some errors directly before last reboot, when all stopped working. Application events: There is something in Windowslogs->Application source is VSS, my guess that is just something complains about not running services during shutdown process, when processes are killed. There is some Sunshine.exe gaming streaming error, i will disable that service, but not expect that is the killer. // I set service startup to 4 - disabled, no change What is more interesting some Microsoft->Windows->Capi2 error, i have to check what it is.. Error is: The description event ID 513 from source Microsoft->Windows->Capi2 cannot be found. Either the component that raises this even is not installed on your local computer or installation is corrupt. Install or repair the component on the local computer.. CAPI is = Cryptographic Application Programming Interface second gen - It details is Unable to backu up image of binary pwdrvio . The system cannout find the file specified. Question if this could cause 21a boot problem - its related to Minitool partition manager or Paragon partition manager.. // I set service startup to 4 - disabled, no changI will add Event system - errors later. System events: Acronis problem - Minute before shudown messages in Event-Application, there was a lot of these errors, over 5 minutes after shutdown was executed by User32. error, Source Microsoft-Windows-DistributedCom - The server {id..} did not register with DCOM with the required timeout. When i searched registry for ID - i found in Apps, only this key under this object TIManagersProxy class Application. https://superuser.com/questions/1106927/what-process-is-running-with-processid1ef75f33-893b-4e8f-9655-c3d602ba4897-vi - this points to Acronis stuff, its know bloatware.. // If i disabled these ones, i got inaccesible boot device error, after enabling them, again 21a error.. So even these virtual devices could cause it.. those are probably some ugly filters, which are sometimes added on some other devices.. and even when you disable all acronis drivers and services, there are still called form somewhere.. I had once problem to remove some Nvidia virtual network device back in WinXP and it managed to some filter too, it was really hard to find out how to remove it and keep machine bootable. Secure boot - Error is The Secure boot update failed to update a Secure boot variable with error Secure Boot is not enable on this machine. // Well i would expect that this would be just Warning not Error, because if had secure boot disabled in BIOS, unless somewhere on the way it become mandatory.. I debugging it in Virtual machine without added TPM device, but i was some no physical with enable and disabled TPM.. no tried to enable Secure boot, i had it disabled because MacOS and Linux. Vmware workstation seems to failing there, it need encrypt machine enable TPM, when i go to encrypt dialog there are 2 options encrypt all files and only the files needs for TPM, and are just nvram and some mem files, but when i select it, i getting message that it needs 300 GB for whole virtual disk encryption.. // Hmm, i maybe now the reason im using vhd and vmware probably needs vmdk for encryption.. Otherwise i was trying to recute Sysprep from live Win10 PE disk, i managed to execute its gui by copping files and dlls from normal installation, but after some processing it failed and im not even sure if it tried to Sysprep offline install or WinPE one.. Log was on offline install - in C:\Windows\System32\Sysprep\Panther , if need 2 dlls to execute for normal install copy to WinPE system32.. and after it failed on some wet*api.dll, but it run for quite a long.. From classic repain cmd sysprep through cmd outputs nothing.. Regading of Minitool guide for everything - https://www.minitool.com/data-recovery/fix-fatal-system-error-windows.html they claim this - Too many invalid and bad registry keys are found. I have no registry backups, autogenerated - they disappered during failed system restoring... and question is how to check if registry are ok, files are there..

Since installing KB5065429 via Windows Update, which took Windows to 19045.6332, I have noticed significant and obvious slow downs when trying to bring the Start menu up, either by clicking on it or using the Windows key on the keyboard. Has anybody else experienced this? Will a fix be issued for this? Are their any known workarounds or tweaks to resolve this?

Hi, not sure if this is me as a user error or a feature requEst, plus the bEst place to post this... #1 -This is a great product! #2 -Any chance to get a "menu scrolling" option with a scroll bar in the start menu when using the "enhanced classic start menu". "default visual style", S icon size and an icon count of "SCROLL BAR" vs. limiting to 30 menu items? i have a Surface Pro tablet with keyboard and NOT a mouse with a scroll wheel. Thanks!

Thanks to everyone for their browser suggestions. As superliew noted <above>, Mozilla has given Firefox ESR v115.x (the legacy version for Win 7 and 8.1) another last-minute reprieve and decided to extend support for this browser until March 2026 (see the official Firefox ESR release calendar at https://whattrainisitnow.com/release/?version=esr) so I'll be recommending my acquaintance stay with Firefox ESR v115.x, assuming uBlock Origin and other popular browser extensions continue to work with the FF v115.x branch for the next 6 months. Unfortunately, I haven’t seen any similar announcements about an extension for Mozilla’s Thunderbird ESR v115.x mail client for Win 7 and 8.1. AFAIK Thunderbird ESR v115.18.0 (rel. 24-Dec-2024) is still the final release for Thunderbird ESR 115. --------------- Dell Inspiron 15 5584 * 64-bit Win 10 Pro v22H2 build 19045.6218 * Firefox v142.0.1 * Microsoft Defender v4.18.25070.5-1.1.25070.4 * Malwarebytes Premium v5.3.8.212-140.0.5364 * Macrium Reflect Free v8.0.7783 * MS Outlook 2019

Here's a copy paste of a report with my experiences with this advapi32.dll patch, until now being on win32's patreon it was probably also "members only" : I was probably the first user testing it, there were no comments before. That's how it was before: Tons of services failing to start, UAC being super-annoying, USB drivers that used to BSOD the system, with the patch don't

Captcha provider certificate error
Karla Sleutel replied to Tripredacus's topic in Site & Forum Issues
Working at the now bankrupt captcha company that hired low wage poor educated individulas, and we see the result. But like I already wrote, they allowed me to get in only by guessing the word! It's strange to see people having troubles understanding simple sentences, even with the screenshot attached. Now I get a standard Google captcha (very simple!), But I only tried from work. -
Suggestions for Browser and Email Client for 64-bit Win 8.1
Karla Sleutel replied to lmacri's topic in Windows 8
Just like Supermium, others have a huge memory leak and crashes, so I tested this one, no leak! Most likely due to the 32bit nature. https://github.com/e3kskoy7wqk/Chromium-for-windows-7/releases/tag/136.0.7063.0 More info about the leak. https://github.com/win32ss/supermium/issues/1566 -
Thanks for the info! So you bought this patch from win32 ss? How fo you know it somewhat works? Or it's just rumours, hearsay?

Hello, Is it possible to only use the classic volume mixer in the "Windows 7 classic fly-out menus" but not for the calendar? I prefer the new calendar but want the old volume mixer. I want to mix and use Windows 7 volume mixer with Windows 10 calendar. Would love to have that as an option.

Windows 11 Beta 25H2 bug report: In 25H2 the menu bar in File Explorer doesn't display whether it is check marked or not. It would seem that "MicroSloth" has robbed even more code out of this new 11 version.

To verify which timer is in use, get falco PhenomII Tweaker and run TimerCheck.exe, not the tweaker's main exe Read the value right on the top called QPC freq: PM Timer = 3.579545 Mhz HPET *classic* = 14.31818 MHz HPET new Intel = 19.200000 Mhz TSC = On Win7+ = CPU_BASE_FREQ/1024, On WinXP = CPU_BASE_FREQ, On Win10 1803+ = usually upscalled to 100MHz

On the LSC patreon site, there is a patcher that edits advapi32.dll from your system, there are also instructions on how to patch it manually. The access to it available only to paid subscribers of the Supermium support, however the patcher itself contains no DRM-like elements https://www.patreon.com/win32 Modern motherboards have no setting to disable HPET, you could modify the BIOS, or I've heard you could disable it when you load Windows using GRUB, myself I've tried neither of those methods yet. Windows 7 and up don't use it by default on modern (Nehalem and up I think) systems except from time to time to resync. Vista does use it as the main timer https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/sysinfo/acquiring-high-resolution-time-stamps Also Windows 7 and newer accept bcdedit entries that control which timer is in use: https://sites.google.com/view/melodystweaks/misconceptions-about-timers-hpet-tsc-pmt#h.bbv7ue62w883 Vista does not. With equal timers used, yes, with a modern Intel HPET that is 5 times slower than it used to be, it loses to systems that are able to utilize TSC. EDIT: Now I ran this benchmark again on Ivy-bridge and it mostly takes like 700-800 ns, so maybe it's only 3 times slower but still

Vista beats 10 and 8!

Where is it!? No such setting on either of my motherboards. HPET is of course always off, every first grader that plays games knows that.
