Sounds interesting, thank you. If I may suggest an improvement to the distribution channel, I'd like to recommend an alternative free host for the file, as RapidShare has never been to my liking for certain reasons: here's ShareBigFile, discovered through Auto-Patcher for Windows 98SE.

Hopefully it'll be of help, as it currently supports download managers, resume, etc.

KB870669 is obselete
Q870669 installs the ADODB.Stream ActiveX Object registry fix:

-----Begin cut & paste here-----

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\CLSID\{00000566-0000-0010-8000-00AA006D2EA4}]

"Compatibility Flags"=dword:00000400

------End cut & paste here------

and it is both a M$ IE 5/6 fix and a MDAC 2.x fix.

But as far as I'm aware M$ has not added it into any MDAC cumulative/newer fix.

So any cumulative MDAC update [like Maximus-Decim's] needs this fix.

On the other hand, M$ has added it as part of MS IE 5/6/7 Cumulative fix a while back:

http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm#IEC

So any cumulative M$ IE 5/6 update [like MDIE6CU and IE6UPD] do not need this fix.

@ MD :hello:

i was getting really excited when i saw this in your _readme.txt file for MDDACU 1.3

For silent installation it is necessary to unpack archive (this cab-archve)

in any directory and to run the "setup.exe /Q"

but true silent doesn't automatically reboot, or it shouldn't because it's still not usable in Auto-Patcher without special code being written just for this title. It would be really good to include and i might go ahead and write that special code, but maybe its easy for you to correct this. So, is there a way to stop the automatic reboot if the user uses "setup.exe /Q" ? ... please let me know, and cheers for this package, it's heaps better than my offering in Auto-Patcher. My intention is just to put your file there and get rid of the rest. Saves on space too. This is why i'm letting you know how keen i am to put it in AP. Let me know!

Can I ask on ask on behalf of all the noobs out there.

Who needs this update?

Does a casual user benefit from it?

that's a good question .. does anyone know the answer? i don't ...

Thank you for the update!

I've just gone back to making 98SE the Windows version installed on my system and had previously used this update to ensure that all the MDAC stuff was properly and fully installed. I had been concerned that it hadn't been updated in a while. And I wasn't sure if the MDAC module in soporific's Auto-Patcher included the 2.5 stuff that is left out of the official 2.8 versions. I knew that your updater installed the necessary parts.

I just applied it. Thanks again.

Shouldn't this thread be one of the stickies? Seems to me this is about the most complete, least confusing method of ensuring MDAC and friends (whatever it is they do :) ) are installed correctly.

Hi MD,

Is it possible to make your 'silent installation' a true silent installation? What i mean is that the computer doesn't automatically reboot - this defeats the purpose of the silent switch. I've asked this before and you never replied, so i'm asking again, is there any good reason why the computer has to reboot automatically when using the silent switch? Why can't the user reboot themselves, after all they used the silent switch didn't they? The user knows they have to reboot.

Eagerly waiting your reply,

Soporific.

@maximus-decim

Thanks for the update. It woks for me.

But, I found this in my registry after installing.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Updates\DataAccess\%COMPID%]

"%COMPID%" ?

I found some other similar issues.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\%KillBit_GUID%]

I tracked it back to OTHER.INF.

These string definitions seem to be missing.

All related to KB870669.

[Strings]
--
; add these to other.inf
COMPID="KB870669"
KillBit_GUID="{00000566-0000-0010-8000-00AA006D2EA4}"
Package_GUID="{5f3c70b3-ac2f-432c-8f9c-1624df61f54f}"
SourceDiskName="Microsoft Data Access Components"
VERSION="6,0,2800,1106"
--

Thanks again. Your work is much appreciated.
