98SE2ME = Killer Replacements: ME -> 98 SE

Recommended Posts

I have just installed 98se2me option 1 on my system and everything appears to work ok (I enjoy playing Spider solitaire on a windows 98SE system) however one small problem I now have is that Windows now no longer shuts down. I have tried reinstalling SP2a as described in the FAQ but it has had no effect. Suggestions please?
When you installed Gape's SP2, if you haven't selected to overwrite newer USER.EXE + USER32.DLL files with older ones, this did not work.

If re-installing SP 2.1a didn't fix this, you may want to replace USER*.* files manually, as quoted from READ1ST.TXT [the "98SE2ME.PIF COMPLETE GUIDE" section, under "* Option 2:"]:

READ1ST.TXT

Original files backed up as GDI32.W98 + GDI.W98 into %windir%\SYSTEM

[usually C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM].

How to restore your original files:

Copy + paste text between cut & paste lines below into Notepad or better

plain text editor/viewer:

http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#TXT

and save it as GDI98.BAT (example):

-----Begin cut & paste here-----

@ECHO OFF

IF "%windir%"=="" GOTO N@

IF NOT EXIST %windir%\SYSTEM\GDI32.W98 GOTO N@

IF NOT EXIST %windir%\SYSTEM\GDI.W98 GOTO N@

IF EXIST %windir%\WININIT.INI GOTO W!

ECHO [Rename]>>%windir%\WININIT.INI

:W!

ECHO.>>%windir%\WININIT.INI

ECHO %windir%\SYSTEM\GDI32.DLL=%windir%\SYSTEM\GDI32.W98>>%windir%\WININIT.INI

ECHO %windir%\SYSTEM\GDI.EXE=%windir%\SYSTEM\GDI.W98>>%windir%\WININIT.INI

ECHO.>>%windir%\WININIT.INI

%windir%\RUNDLL32.EXE %windir%\SYSTEM\SHELL32.DLL,SHExitWindowsEx 2

:N@

CLS

EXIT

------End cut & paste here------

Then run GDI98.BAT -> reboot.

Or I could use [probably, did no test] the hexed versions of MM by X-max, which are part of his 98SE

The patch would be better because it adds missing APIs that require other programs to

work besides MM

like AutoUpdate etc....

Yes your right if the thing you're meaning is that KUP adds missing APIs that other progs also require.

The computer still doesn’t shut down with 98se2me installed. I have tried the above suggestion plus all the normal 98SE tricks including disabling system restore!!! Strangely the computer “system restarts” correctly. It hangs just before the message “it is now safe to switch off your computer” The computer is an AT type. Any more ideas.

Sounds to me like your shutdown problem is not related to 98SE2ME, but to some buggy system file(s) and/or system setting(s).

I've never heard before of any shutdown issues due to installing 98SE2ME.

Most common setting that usually fixes this, is to disable "FastReboot", as described here:

UPNPUI.DLL

I'll add this file to options 1 + 2 in the near future [together with clipsrv.exe].

I'll also add irmon.exe to option 3.

I'm also considering adding modded MM from X-mas W98UPG Pack to options 1 + 2, but I need more time for testing.

All this, time permitting.

I'll update this thread when I post the updates.

Why don't you add webvw.dll from MS05-049 to Option 3? It works on ME with no problem, and it only has 2 missing dependencies in 98SE, both in shell32.dll. What you could do is renumber it in Resource Hacker to 5.50.4134.7061.

Also, a little note about Internet Games on your site. 2003 SP1 does not include ANY of the games.

Thanks for the tips.

I'll see what I can do.

BTW:

This is what I say here:

http://www.mdgx.com/98-5.htm#SS

Windows XP + 2003 Setup CDs include newer versions of these Internet Games.
Nothing about Win2003 SP1.

What I meant was that 2003 does not include ANY games.

Thanks.

I've tried a late beta of Win2003, and it had the internet games.

I guess they removed them in final/Gold/RTM edition. :(

PROBLEMCHYLD:

I did not add UPNPUI.DLL nor IRMON.EXE because:

- I don't have any infrared devices to test IR*.* files from WinME CD.

If you wish to test the IR files from WinME CD:

IRPROPS.CPL

INFRARED.DLL

IR_NDI.DLL

IRCAMERA.DLL

WSPIRDA.DLL

IRFTP.EXE

IRMON.EXE

INFRARED.INF

IRCAMERA.INF

IRDA.INF

IRMINI.INF

IRDA.SYS

IRMINI.SYS

WSPIRDAK.SYS

RCOMM.VXD

IRENUM.VXD

on your 98SE OS, please do so, and let me know if they work [or if they don't].

Open the INF files in Notepad to view interdependencies, file locations, registry keys, regsvr32 registration etc.

You must have at least 1 IR device plugged into one of the serial [iR] ports of your computer mobo or into a 3rd party ISA/PCI add-on card.

- UPNPUI.DLL is tied into the UPnP files, but *only* if WinXP ICS is *also* installed *and* properly networked.

Without WinXP ICS/network, UPnP files are useless.

And besides, 98SE doesn't include the other UPnP files [which can be downloaded separately]:

* Microsoft Windows 98/98 SE + ICS UPnP Unchecked Buffer System Compromise

SSDPAPI.DLL, UPNP.DLL + SSDPSRV.EXE 4.90.3003 Security Vulnerability Fix:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/ms01-059.mspx

Direct download [223 KB, English]:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/win.../314941USA8.EXE

More info:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=314941

Requires Windows XP ICS client already installed!

MSKB: Internet Connection Sharing (ICS):

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=234815

MSKB: Universal Plug and Play (UPnP):

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=262458

How to install UPnP Security Vulnerability Fix on Windows 98/98 SE without

Windows XP ICS Client:

1. Make sure Windows 98/98 SE ICS is already installed + properly configured:

http://www.windowsnetworking.com/j_helmig/icsclnt.htm

More info:

http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics_98/

2. Create C:\TEMP (example) from a DOS box:

MD C:\TEMP

3. Download 314941USA8.EXE (see above) into C:\TEMP.

4. Run:

C:\TEMP\314941USA8.EXE /C /Q /T:C:\TEMP

5. Copy these 3 files from C:\TEMP into %windir%\SYSTEM (usually

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM):

COPY/Y C:\TEMP\SSDPAPI.DLL %windir%\SYSTEM

COPY/Y C:\TEMP\UPNP.DLL %windir%\SYSTEM

COPY/Y C:\TEMP\SSDPSRV.EXE %windir%\SYSTEM

overwriting existing ones (if any).

6. Run:

%windir%\SYSTEM\SSDPSRV.EXE

7. Create a new shortcut to %windir%\SYSTEM\SSDPSRV.EXE into

%windir%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup .

8. Delete C:\TEMP.

Therefore, because the purpose of 98SE2ME is to replace 98SE files with ME files, adding the UPnP files only adds to the size of the installer [which is now 3 MB because I just added Movie Maker :(], serving no other purpose.

hey MDGx. I did test out your 98SE2ME pack yesterday on a Win98se PC. I will say that when I used option 1 to install 98SE2ME (it took a while), the multiple screen saver icon bug occured as mentioned in MS article 280722. However, when I installed 98SE2ME with option 3 to install the WinME Explorer/Shell interface, the multiple screen saver bug was mostly fixed and prevented the bug from getting out of control. With the ME Explorer GUI installed under Win98se and testing out an MS screen saver, it'll now only display ONE screen saver icon and not display multiple screen saver icons when running a screen saver & coming out from it subsequent times. It was just like that in a normal WinME machine.

so the problem in MS article 280722 is mitigated by using the ME Explorer GUI under Win98se

Good point.

I'll mention this fix in 98SE2ME READ1ST.TXT in the next release.

Thanks.

I have added this to the "KNOWN BUGS + FIXES" section of READ1ST.TXT:

http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/READ1ST.TXT

BUG [NOT related to 98SE2ME]:

The screen saver left-over taskbar icons bug described here:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=280722

seems to happen while using ANY Win98 SE USER.EXE version [including ALL WinME

USER.EXE versions] EXCEPT oldest 4.10.2222 [original version from Win98 SE

setup CD].

FIX:

Install 98SE2ME option 3, which among other system files, installs newer

EXPLORER.EXE from WinME setup CD.

[thank you erpdude8]
