I have WXP SP2 and Office 2003 SP1. The tool told me I have software running that might need updating. Downloaded a bunch but each fix told me I'm already patched or running a newer update. (or something along those lines).

Let me get this straight, M$ done something which will cause a buffer underrun in a JPEG now? And the fix for it is simply a reg hack?

*Update* If your not using M$ Office pre 2004 based software and are using XPSP2 this is not needed. Unless you haven't updated your .Net to 1.1sp1, then it points you to the 1.1sp1 update. Although I do see a patch as well for IE6SP1, but am unsure if it would be needed for it. Which means unless I would need it for IE6SP1, I have no need for this patch...YAY! One less headache to destroy what's left of my last brain cell.

It depends on what software you have installed. A clean install of WinXP SP2 is not affected, but Windows 2000 with IE6 is affected, Office 2003 without SP1 likewise, and so on... This "update" for winxp is simply a tool that tells you that you should get updates for the programs you have installed....

They why does the tool tell my I have products that may need updating? This tool can't differentiate between WXPSP1 and SP2 or Office 2003 and Office 2003 SP1?!?!

Also, I noticed that people were using:

Is this a necessity or is this not one of the quiet install files? Also, where are they getting this script8825.exe file from or am I missing something here, as I don't see mention of the download for this one, or was it scripten.exe that is being referenced?

script8825.exe is the renamed Windows Script 5.6 update, which can be found on the first page of this thread.

It seems Q873374 is a critical hotfix on all Windows NT systems.

I would suggest that you make your unattended cd without the regtweak, and install Q873374 to see that you are not affected by this, and then add the regtweak as the last thing before you rebuild your cd. That way you know everything is ok.

I installed IE6.0sp1-KB833989-x86-ENU.exe via svcpack.inf on windows 2000, and WindowsServer2003-KB833987-x86-ENU.EXE on windows 2003, and Q873374 is still listed as a critical hotfix on windows update. When installed all it does is telling me that I am secure...

Is it just me, or is Microsoft using a different packaging technique for the KB885626 update? I opened it up with WinRAR and saw a new format that I hadn't seen before.

I'm also wondering if this fix is actually needed for SP2. It looks to me that it's a patch to be applied to SP1 systems prior to installing SP2. I tried to confirm that by looking at the file versions in the installer, but they're in a foreign format. But I'll play with that more tonight and see if I can figure it out.

*sigh* That's what I thought. Thanks for the confirmation.

EDIT: It looks like that hotfix is for post-SP2 as well. It updates update.sys to build 5.1.2600.2508 (from 5.1.2600.2180)

EDIT2: The /integrate switch works with it too B). The only thing I don't like is that it doesn't compress the file at all. But it does automatically create the svcpack directory with the cat file and exe file in it. Pretty nice.
