However, I found an alternative player that got MP4 to play on NT 4 after trying at least 20 different media players. :)

What kind of player is it?

I am currently satisfactorily using 71.84 with a GeForce 6800 PCI Express card. The OpenGL 3D screen savers included with NT look good with antialiasing enabled.

Yea, I also use 71.84 and NVIDIA 6200 PCIe for game Serious Sam (with 77.72 game not work)

VLC 1.0.5 should be the latest version for Windows NT 4.0, available from my tools section -> https://soggi.org/misc/tools.htm. You may find other last versions of some tools there (f.e Avira UnErase 1.4, CloneSpy 2.63, DirectX Media 6.0, Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.22pre, K-Meleon 1.5.4 or RetroZilla 2.2/2.3).

Please note: The latest version for Windows NT 4.0 is not always denoted as "WinNT4" version, sometimes the latest Win9x version etc. could be the latest NT4 version.

Tested and no,it requires SHGetFolderPathW which isn't compatible with NT 4.0. If you got it working, then did you use a patch?

I don't have a computer running NT 4.0, so I can't confirm it myself. Can't remember were I got the information from that 1.0.5 is the last version for NT 4.0. Did a quick search and found this post that also confirms 1.0.5 doesn't run correctly -> Resurrecting NT4 in 2016.

I guess you also tried 0.8.6i and it didn't work!? I will change the download on my website then...

It did work actually. I just prefer 0.8.6d since 0.8.6i defaults to skinned GUI which froze VLC...instead of using wxwidgets.

What do you mean by "defaults to skinned GUI which froze VLC"? Sorry, English is not my native language. And what about versions 0.8.6e/f/g/h?

Its quite easy to install virtual machine with NT4, but not with working graphics.. For it you need PCem or 86box, what is hard, but not very easy. Im not sure what is Dosbox-X NT4 virtual machine support..

Guest Additions can help you get working graphics,if that's what you mean by working graphics....
