Jody Thornton
I run MSE (the x86 Vista/7 install) on Windows Server 2003. It works quite well, though I do realize that it's not officially supported. However, the last updates show the same "support ending" message that showed up on Windows XP last year. Now, I guess I'm surprised that the code in the Vista/7 installer would detect Server 2003 as XP, but moreover, I'm surprised that this installer would even have the end of support message. My hope was that since MSE in not even supposed to recognize Server 2003, that it would just keep running without issue until January 2020. After all, I used the installation file for Windows Vista and 7. So I went back to v4.304.4 (I think that's right...lol). It takes current definition updates, and keeps running without the notice. I wondered if any one might've know another way around this perhaps. Cheers All! (EDIT - Ooops, I meant to write "without" the notice. That has been corrected. Sorry for the confusion) Edited April 22, 2015 by JodyT
submix8c
It's detecting the Win2K3, of which support *is* ending real soon. HTH
dencorso
I'm not sure, because I don't use MSE. But I think you may need to go back to version 4.4.304.0... More about it on this page, elsewhere, at dslreports. Then again... is it precisely 4.4.304.0 you've already gone back to and not even it works anymore? JosefReisinger
Did anybody try to install MSE on windows 2000?
blackwingcat
I use Windows Defender + SEP 11.7 on Win2000.Before I could install it on Windows 2000.But It requires Windows Genuine Activation to work. (Windows 2000 does not have its component. ) Did anybody try to install MSE on windows 2000? Edited April 22, 2015 by blackwingcat
Tommy
I've attempted to install Microsoft Security Essentials on Windows 2000 as well. I don't think it was WGA that stopped me so much from doing it but it seemed to me that setup would crash or wouldn't finish, even if setting compatibility mode. Just tried version 1, I passed the genuine verification but as soon as it tried installing, then I got a critical stop crash error and it wouldn't proceed any further. Jody Thornton
It's detecting the Win2K3, of which support *is* ending real soon. HTHSee I thought it was the April 2015 deadline for MSE. No biggie though. And to answer Dencorso, the 4.4.304.0 version does work without complaint. I just figured that the Vista and 7 installer would be devoid of that code. dencorso
Thanks for the info! If 4.4 still Works OK, then the following info remains relevant.Problemchyld posted somewhere here on MSFN that if one extracts the setup.exe from 4.4.304.0, and then also extracts v 4.6.305.0 and replaces the setup.exe with the one from 4.4, then 4.6 installs without the nags, IIRR. I haven't tested it, but it may be of interest.
nostaglic98
This is probably a dreadful time to ask - given that XP/Server 2K3 are now 'long' out of support... However I was curious as to how exactly one gets MSE to work with Server 2003. Reason I ask is that my file-server/hobby domain controller run it, and I would like to have something far less mediocre than (take a deep breath) ClamWin. Versions I found would flat-out refuse installation. I tried finding older versions, which did the same. I did try the "batch file technique," which is supposed to run the program without OS restrictions. I also tried XP compatibility. None worked. Jody Thornton
If you go find the MSE version for Windows Vista (version 4.4.304.0). That one will install on Windows Server 2003. Filehippo should still have it

sdfox7
Many times FileHippo will redirect you to the current version, even though it says it's the previous one. I archived the 32-bit and 64-bit installers for MSE 4.4.304 in 2014. You can find them here: http://sdfox7.com/xp/sp3/EOL/mse/x86/MSEInstall.exe They are also always available via the Internet Archive Wayback Machine, just pick the date you want: 32-bit: https://web.archive.org/web/*/http://download.microsoft.com/download/A/3/8/A38FFBF2-1122-48B4-AF60-E44F6DC28BD8/ENUS/x86/MSEInstall.exe 64-bit: https://web.archive.org/web/*/http://download.microsoft.com/download/A/3/8/A38FFBF2-1122-48B4-AF60-E44F6DC28BD8/ENUS/amd64/MSEInstall.exe Edited February 1, 2016 by sdfox7
