2° Media Player: I Use foobar2k v0.9.3, but there is an more lighter who support DirectMusic output? (MP3, WMA's, ETC)

1) Opera

2) XMPlay or PlainAmp perhaps but a barebone foobar is rather light already no?

3) I don't know

I strongly recommend K-Meleon over Opera - far faster - it's actually bearable on a 200Mhz Pentium running Win98SE that's next to me right now whereas Opera is unusable. If you run 98SE on modern HW, I suppose it doesn't matter much, however.

I'd recommend OpenOffice on a modern box, but it's Java powered so it will crawl on an older box - dunno what does DOCX on that kind of hardware well, but I'd be interested to know as well. I haven't checked if it does DOCX, but Abiword is pretty light iirc.

I need to look up K-meleon then, I'm always out for more performance (on a 1.4GHz Tualatin)

OpenOffice is pretty good.

As far as DOCX goes, perhaps try unzipping them and see what your software says about it. (DOCX files are Zipped DOC files)

1° FF2 but msn dropped support on this...

2° Mplayerc

3° OpenOffice 2.4

Not really. :(

Just for the record:

docx has NOTHING to do with doc, it's basically XML inside a zipped container.

Aha, good to know

A friend of mine messed with DOCX and said that to me that they're zipped DOC files... so this is not true then.

Media Player - I use 1by1 - very small and light MP3 player. It can also use some Winamp input plugins for other formats. BTW, why not good old Winamp 2.xx? I think it is very light too.

XMplay is a good choice aswell, very small and light, and can also make use of Winamp plugins. In fact I even hold it on a USB stick so I don't have to use "crap" on others' PCs :P

Is that true for all the other "X" files (XLSX, etc.) as well?

Probably not. :(

I've been living with that issue since 2006. FF1x was slow compared to IE6... FF2x was worse... and FF3x refused to run on my machine regardless of whatever I tried (KernelEX didn't help... probably because my Windows 98 installation was too heavily modified, with IE stripped off).

2° Media Player: I Use foobar2k v0.9.3, but there is an more lighter who support DirectMusic output? (MP3, WMA's, ETC)

I used Windows Media Player 6.4 with FFDSHOW... but you could also use Media Player Classic.

An old version of Microsoft Office with Microsoft's "Office 2007 compatibility pack".

Office 2007 compatibility pack cannot be installed on 98 even with KernelEx.

Edit: And about PolyEdit - it needs Office 2007 compatibility pack for opening docx, so its not an option for opening docx under Win98.
