A growing number of 9X users are running without resident AV programs, some are surviving by good housekeeping and some are surviving by good fortune.

The periodic use of online scanners is therefore the only method of checking if you are operating a clean machine.

The following online AV scanners are currently still supporting 9X. Some require IE and ActiveX and some do list support for other browsers, however I personally run them all on IE6 and is the only time IE is put to use.

Symantec Security Check (Virus Detection and Security Scan)

Eset Online Scanner

McAfee Free Scan

Trend Micro Housecall 6.5

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/uk

That is great information. I will add this to the front page :thumbup

And once one has zoomed in on a suspect file and wants to be sure, VirusTotal is the place to go. It'll scan the file submitted to it with 41 different scanners and give all results in a single table.

UPDATE on DVDFab:

Well, it looks like they finally edited their download webpage, http://dvdfab.com/download.htm , and deleted the "98/ME" in the O/S requirement box. It was there like 1 or 2 weeks ago. I have not tried the latest DVDFab stable version yet (v6.0.7.0), because I am redoing my 98SE box. I had an unfortunate harddisk issue and I didn't have a backup. Anyway, from what I gather, 98/ME support was probably dropped/broken when version 6.x was started earlier this year, but someone probably just forgot to change the system requirements to reflect that.

Ironically, DVDFab version 5.1.1.0, back in November 2008, restored 98/Me functionality:

Fix: Windows 98/Me support was broken for some time, and now it's back.

There is also a DVDFab 6.1.x beta, but I doubt that, and later stable versions, will fully work with 98/Me. Someone will probably have to change the list in this thread to say that DVDFab will only work from version 5.x and earlier (I don't know about early DVDFab 6.x versions though).

Kasperky Internet Security v6.0.2.621 still updates fine under Win98, I just updated the signatures.

During updating I recently got the msg "File black.lst is missing or corrupted. Please run Updater to fix the problem." and KIS stopped working. It was the 2nd time that I got this msg during the last 8 months, even if I am using a valid key from a purchased retail box. Somehow their blacklisting procedure is buggy. It's unlikely that it is a Win98-specific problem since there are many messages at forum.kaspersky.com about black.lst. The problem of the missing or corrupted file black.lst gets solved by -> Uninstall KIS -> Repair, this sets the signatures back, then -> run Updater again, KIS will be updated Ok.

There are still plenty of retail boxes of Kaspersky Internet Security 6 at ebay. Only the license key inside the retail box is of interest. The software to be installed should not be the stuff on the CD in the box, but v6.0.2.621 which updates Ok under Win98SE.

Unfortunately, when one tries to download the previously downloadable v6.0.2.621 from http://usa.kaspersky.com/support/208279811...port/208279811/ only a msg: forbidden is displayed.

In December 2008 I was informed that generally the not-yet-used licence keys DO expire after a certain point, since v6.0 hasn't been sold in stores for a while. I had nevertheless purchased at that time several retail boxes of v6, but my gut feeling is that pretty soon Kaspersky will also walk away from Win98. Kaspersky Internet Security v6 came on the market in 2006, so given the 3-year-warranty period required by law in Europe, one could speculate that their Win98 support is going to end in 2009.

I am using Kaspersky only as an on-demand scanner, mainly for eMule downloads under Win98. When Kaspersky Internet Security does stop updating under Win98, I will have to do the on-demand scanning under WinXP. On-line scanning is not feasible, given the amount of downloads to be scanned.

I just looked at the French and German web shops of Kaspersky, and they still sell v6 license keys, in contrast to the US web shop:

http://www.kaspersky.com/de/license_renewal

http://www.kaspersky.com/fr/license_renewal

These license keys probably work only with the French or German versions 6, but this makes me speculate that Kaspersky Internet Security may remain updateable under Win98 until the end of 2010 at least.

Someone could update the Internet apps section with Yahoo! Messenger 8.10249 (site: oldversion.com) which works and is still compatible with Yahoo!'s current net protocols.

EDIT: Checked on WinMe. It takes some time before it logs-in (probably something with its network settings, happened on Longhorn builds too) but it works.

The Eset on-line AV scanner I mentioned in post#375 appears at the moment to be non functional on 9x. Throwing up an error signal when downloading the latest definitions file.

This has happened on a previous occasion and has been corrected but considering eset have never listed it as functional on 9x even in its beta days, it remains to be seen if this will be corrected.

EDIT: As of today the Eset on-line scanner is again functional on 9x

It may also be close to the end for the Trend Micro Housecall Scanner also. Version 6.5 works on 9x but the site also gives access to  Version 7.0 in beta form. This does not work with 9x.

I cannot see, when V7.0 becomes final, Trend Micro keeping V6.5 online as well as the newer version.

This begs my next question... is there a free/share-ware DVD burner that someone highly recommends, for 98SE?

There are plenty of them.

SmallCDWriter (which I currently use),

Expressburn

ImgBurn

UsefulUtils Disc Studio (which I plan to switch to when I test their ANSI build, still have not tested)

And many more.
