I'v tried Zmule (local version of eMule and the same program, I htink)

What influence does the operating system have?

eMule works with all Windows versions after Windows 95. A P2P application uses many network connections and thus needs a stable network implementation. Windows 98 and ME have a very poor network implementation impairing eMule's performance. More recent operating systems like Windows 2000 or XP are better suited.

Tip: In the ini file enter "0" after "WinXPSP2=".

After that zMule worked almost normaly. Crashing here and there, but nothing preventing to use it. Reducing the down and up load threads helped make it more stable while using the computer with other programs. While not using the computer, I set it on full all night, every nights for 2 weeks, without a glitch.

I'm not sure about the "impaired" perforances they are talking about: It was often downloading and uploading up to the physical limit of my aDSL connection...

Would you please suggest a utility, that substitutes Norton Utilities.

I have been using NU successfully over the past few years, but I switched to SATA disk recently. Therefore a new utility is to be put into consideration.

Never loved built-in ScanDisk.

GoldWave v5.23 works fine on Windows 98, don't know if it KernelEX is the reason, but it works!

I agree, SIW is better. That's why it is already on the list

But for Everest I recommend older version 1.51. It can also be found following the link you provided. Everest 2+ is freeware but also crippleware. Everest 1.51 is the last fully functional free version.

Concerning the Windiff utility v6.x mentioned in the first post.

I was wondering if anyone had already downloaded the Vista Platform SDK and might favor us by yanking out the Windiff files (and probably also the GUTILS.DLL) and making it available here possibly in a file called Windiff_Latest.zip or something?

For any masochist with time on their hands, the huge Microsoft SDK file is referenced at MDGx as such:

I'll do it myself if no-one else already has! But this would certainly be the mother of all world records for stupid bandwidth wasting. Download 1.1 GB to extract ~250 KB. Talk about an order of magnitude. Microsoft, you are idiots. Those SDK cabinets should be expanded somewhere for the Techs to use.

Hi All ... I will let the moderator (s) decide if the last version of Foxit Reader 2.2.2129 for Windows is the last version for Win 98SE. It was listed to work with this OS but the new version (v2.3) no longer lists Win 98 or 98SE. This little paragraph is from the Foxit Reader website under Info/Overview :

... as I said earlier, Win 98 was listed with the last version ... I wrote to FileHippo about this same question, since they are still saying (Windows - all versions). I never heard back from them. ... but at the FoxitReader website, Win 98SE is no longer included in the list.

Why not try it yourself? I've seen too many sites that stopped mentioning any version of Windows below 2000 (even though some are manufacturer sites and are supposed to offer support - drivers - for their products for all OS versions) and still the software listed - in most cases - does work on Win9x.

As if someone - we know who - would have grabbed them by the balls and forced them to not even whisper 'Win9x'...

I see no fewer than twelve Windiff builds in my personal archives and I believe each works in Win9x provided you plant the appropriate GUTILS.DLL nearby. The latest version that I have is v5.2.3790.0 (srv03_rtm.030324-2048). There may be later ones that I am not aware of.

Everyone, please feel free to add your knowledge to this.

Perhaps MDGx will consider archiving the *latest* Windiff on his most excellent site.

WinDiff 6.0.6000.16384 is the version that comes with the Vista SDK.

As mentioned, I have not looked into the Windows Server 2008 SDK... I will check it out and post results...
