  1. I would respectfully disagree with that suggestion. I tried this program, liked it well enough, but after I ran Spybot, it found the following malware ... Telecom/Malware! FlashDollars.RegistryRepair: [sBI $9FE4E5EC] Program directory Use this program with caution! I immediately deleted it after Spybot S&D detected this malware. You could try RegSeeker 1.55 as an alternative. I use it every day and it works quite well without any glitches or crashes.
  2. Thanks for *ALL* of the helpful suggestions and advice that I (never) received here.
  3. Hello All, I recently received an Iomega CD-RW 52x24x52x / DVD-ROM 16x USB 2.0 External Drive from a friend. It has a USB plug and when I plugged it in, I received the following error message: The following error occurred: 'The file was not found' (error #2) Setup could not finish opening a file on the source disk. Source file: 'C\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\PRECOPY\Ufd.sys' Destination file: 'C\WINDOOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\Ufd.sys=sp1.cab' I have read in previous posts on other forums that unfortunately this error seems to be a common problem with Win98SE USB ports, as they still have the older 1.1 version, as opposed to the modern 2.0 version on new OS. I went to the Iomega site and downloaded a 14.3 MB file that was recommended for all Win98 users to do before they filed a support request. The name of this file was USB and FireWire (1394) Update Module : English. After downloading the update module and restarting my computer, still nothing at all. By nothing, I mean that when I plug the Iomega external drive into the USB port, it does not recognize it at all. The port is working however, as I also have a SanDisk Cruzer 512 MB thumb drive that works just fine via the same USB port, so there is not any problem with the port malfunctioning, other than this infernal mysterious 'Ufd.sys' file, which I cannot find anywhere as a separate download. I do not want to download exuberant's 2.1a cumulative patch. All I would like to have is the separate Ufd.sys file. If anyone could possibly upload that to this forum somewhere, or point me to another external link, I would be most appreciative, as this Iomega external drive is very nice and I would like to actually use it sometime soon. Thanks very much for any help that someone in this forum could provide. PC: Compaq Presario 5838 OS: Win98SE CPU: Athlon 500 MHz RAM: 128 MB USB: 1.1 (Viatech)
  4. Thanks very much, RetroOS, for the Microsoft support link. Actually it did help, as the Add/Remove Programs problem just occurred early yesterday evening, so I was able to restore a previous copy of the registry by following the instructions via the link that you provided. Fortunately, the registry backup that I selected restored the corrupted APPWIZ.CPL applet. To help other forum members who may experience this problem, here's what I did: First, I changed the number of registry backup copies from 5 to 15, using X-Setup Pro 6.6.300.Final1 (Program Options / Built in Windows Apps / Windows Registry Checker / Maximum Number of Backups) to increase the percentages of my having a previously good registry copy in the future, should any major registry error occur again. Then I followed the directions in the Microsoft support update 221512: 1. Restart your computer in MS-DOS mode. 2. At the MS-DOS prompt, type cd\windows\command - then press ENTER. 3. At the C: prompt, type scanreg /restore - then press ENTER. NOTE: That's a space between scanreg and the /restore command. 4. Select the previous registry you want to restore - then press ENTER. NOTE: A properly working registry has the word "Started" next to the date. 5. When you receive notification that you restored a properly working registry, press ENTER to restart your computer. Thanks again for your help RetroOS.
  5. Hello, I wanted to remove a program from my Add/Remove Programs list and I was surprised to see that it was empty! Is there any way that I can repair the registry to fix this problem? I already ran a system restore, but unfortunately, my backup also had this problem when I ran the backup, so the restore simply put the same empty Add/Remove Programs applet back again. I have some basic knowledge of how to manually repair the registry, although I would appreciate some guidance as to what I should be looking for to correct this problem. Which registry key(s) do I need to edit in order to restore the Add/Remove Programs applet so that it is visible again? Thanks very much for any help and suggestions! OS: Win98SE RAM: 128 MB CPU: AMD Athlon 500 MHz
  6. You can also find Everest Home Edition 2.20.405 here -- http://old-versions.net/show/Everest_Home_Edition/50/ Update: I know that many people here really love Everest and highly recommend it, but IMHO SIW (System Information for Windows) by Gabriel Topala is just as good, if not better. It's light on system resources and doesn't require installation. Just download and use it. Easy to read output files and navigate. If you want to give it a try, here's the link: SIW 2008-04-02 [1.69 MB] http://www.gtopala.com/index.html
  7. halohalo, Thanks very much for this file: LAST - FREE - Logitech MouseWare 9.80 --- I had been having some weird issues with my scroll properties lately, so this updated version seems to have corrected the problem.
