Hlafordlaes Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Hi,Only hitch I have using Win98SE on my board is the lack of HD audio drivers. Anyone know if there are hacked versions of either Realtek (ALC888) or Creative X-Fi drivers around somewhere?Thx
galahs Posted January 16, 2008 Author Posted January 16, 2008 Just to let you know I will update the list in the next few days. Just been on holidays.
RetroOS Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 galahs,erpdude8 provided information on a great task manager for all Windows including 9x:Windows UtilitiesONGD - FREE - AnVir Task Manager Free --- http://www.anvir.com/taskmanagerfree/
Drugwash Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 Another one of those stupid applications which ignore the function that the [X] in the corner was designed for: CLOSE the application. And... 'upgrade to Pro if you want <this> or <that>'? C'mon...It's resources usage is ridiculous as its system requirements are. Codestuff Starter does almost the same job and runs fine on a 200MHz Pentium.
RetroOS Posted January 20, 2008 Posted January 20, 2008 Another well known app:Windows UtilitiesONGD - FREE - Dependency Walker --- http://www.dependencywalker.com/Hey Drugwash,I think AnVir Task Manager Free is a great tool. The 'Pro' features I don't really need anyway.I do not start it with Windows and only run it when I need to check out what's going on behind the scenes! The reason for it's resource and system requirements is because it is a powerful utility.Sure, their are smaller TMs for older systems too.
Drugwash Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 Could you perform a feature comparison between AnVir Task Manager Free and Codestudd Starter, and point out the differences - at least the ones that matter?I found the former to be very slow on my 400MHz Pentium II (probably because of the skin, for one), while the latter is extremely easy on the system. And seeing that soporific already grabbed the former and tossed it in Auto-Updater, if I wanted to update Win98SE on my testing 166MHz Pentium I, I'd certainly wanna have at hand a tool that'd actually work on such system.
RetroOS Posted January 21, 2008 Posted January 21, 2008 Okay, nice tool. Simple but nice.Windows UtilitiesONGD - FREE - CodeStuff Starter --- http://codestuff.tripod.com/products_starter.htmlDrugwash, when I've got time I'll compare the two...Always good to have constructive input and ideas.
Chozo4 Posted January 27, 2008 Posted January 27, 2008 (edited) Just a followup / update. The link provided for FFDSHOW points to a discontinued branch of it's development. Milan stopped development of it long ago it seems (back in '04). Continued development based on Milan's FFDSHOW branch can be found at the following URL:http://ffdshow-tryout.sourceforge.net/Also to add:http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/Last version of Haali's Media Splitter that works on win9x was on 03-06-2007 and can be found at http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_so....cfm/03_06_2007It is used for the opening and support of MKV video/audio containers. Drugwash Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 A few days ago I have tried to install ffdshow-rev1803_20080120.zip and ffdshow-rev1805_20080122.zip (MMX version) and they both threw an error stating 'The setup files are corrupted...". I downloaded again from the mirror provided by free-codecs.com and still the same error. However, an older build I had around (ffdshow_beta4a_rev1723_20071224_clsid.exe) installed succesfully, but I experience very frequent image lockups (on a 400MHz Pentium II with 256 MB PC133 SDRAM and GeForce4 Ti4200 VTD8X 128MB).Could anyone else confirm these issues?
Chozo4 Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 but I experience very frequent image lockups (on a 400MHz Pentium II with 256 MB PC133 SDRAM and GeForce4 Ti4200 VTD8X 128MB).Could anyone else confirm these issues?Try adjusting the decoder options in the FFDSHow video decoder confiuration. I experienced the video lockups but sound still playing due to the quality conrol 'Drop frame on delay' setting. It would catch up after a minute or two but got annoying.Certain formats are cpu/vid intensive. Tried using an H.264 vid on my laptop and only started getting smooth play when enabling 'Resize & aspect' to not only resize to a smaller output but also setting the 'Luma Method' to 'point'.Seems higher quality vids on some systems cause alot of video delay (latency behind the audio). Can see (and adjust setting accordingly) the video delay by enabling the OSD and checking in 'Video Delay'. 1
