Win98 Installation Trouble (Slow Splash Screen)
Steven W replied to scrapser's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Are you absolutely certain you have to install First Edition? The Second Edition update CD that I used to have would allow you to simply insert the FE CD at sometime during the install to prove that you're eligible to use the upgrade CD. As for disabling SATA, it may not be possible. I don't think it should matter as long as you're using an IDE drive. -

I'd suggest eliminating all the potential issues you may have and a re-install. Use one of the IDE hard drives, take out one of the memory modules, restore the optimized defaults (perhaps disable SATA support), and do a clean install, then see where things are. Oh yeah, use your CRT until you get other things figured out. -

Think again. From what reading I've done, the Nforce4 ultra chipset is supposedly incompatible with Win98. I'm not saying that it's impossible to get working with 98, but I find it difficult to believe that, in the past, you simply ran the installation and it just worked. That said, I note some of the specs match the Nforce3, and drivers are available for Windows 98: http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_udp_win9x_4.27 I recommend downloading and extracting with 7-zip (Right-click and choose 'Extract Files') and using the device manager to update drivers pointing it to the various folders (there's 6 in the extracted contents). Pasted below are the content of Readme.txt from the extracted file: -

I think some info on the Motherboard is the minimum someone would need to be of assistance. BTW, to stop the Boot Logo open a Dos Prompt and type "attrib -r -s -h c:\msdos.sys" (without quotes), press Enter type "notepad c:\msdos.sys" (again no quotes) Look for "Logo=1" Change it to Logo=0 if the line's not there just add Logo=0 and, of course, save the file in notepad. Making a backup of the file before modifying it might not be a bad idea either. Oh yeah, it occurs to me that it may not be the logo that's slowing things down, might be what's happening in the background. -

Why do I keep hearing the Looney Tunes theme song? -
Just tried Sumatra PDF 1.5.1 portable, noticed that if I opened a PDF once, the program crashes, open it again it renders fine. If I change KernelEx compatibility to Win2k SP4, it works fine. It has something to do with the creation of (or adding entries to) sumatrapdfprefs.dat that occurs in the folder with SumatraPDF.exe when Sumatra opens a file.

I inadvertently ran across this while looking for other programs: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/drweb-anti-virus-link-checker/ It's a Firefox extension, that Says it works with Firefox version 1 - 4

WinCVT combined with "Office converters" is pretty nifty, it allows you to convert between document types that you have filters installed for. You don't have to have Office installed, I just have the viewers and some converter packs. http://wincvt.sourceforge.net/ It can be handy for MS Works documents and Word Perfect documents. I've found that you can use MS Word 5.5 for Dos, save your documents as RTF (Its DOC format isn't compatible with newer version, thanks MS) and you can convert them to modern DOC format, or if you have KernelEX and the Office 2007 converter pack installed, even DOCX. Microsoft gives Word 5.5 away (No it's not freeware, but you don't have to pay for it). You can download it from this link, if you want: http://download.microsoft.com/download/word97win/Wd55_be/97/WIN98/EN-US/Wd55_ben.exe

This guy, Peter Hirschberg, has several programs at his site: http://peterhirschberg.com/mysoftware.html I recommend Aire Freshener: I guess we can consider "discontinued charityware" freeware. Edit: I do not recommend allowing it to be the default CD player (I think you have to uncheck a box during install)

Here's something I always thought was overkill, "Registry Protection" programs, like RegistryProt: http://www.tucows.com/preview/218922 I've found them far more annoying than useful.
-
Some might have an aversion to it, but I still use Tiny Personal Firewall (2.0.15A). If I recall correctly, it has some issue with a Norton defrag utility. McAfee's Stinger Tool still works (I don't believe it requires KernelEx).

I ran across this doing a Google search: http://www.diskinternals.com/linux-reader/ According to the features page (http://www.diskinternals.com/linux-reader/features.shtml) it's compatible with 98 even 95!

Is there some reason you have to do this from Windows 98? Is the system "modern" enough to run some Linux distro's live CD? I'd think you could transfer files to the 98 drive from EXT3 (assuming that's what it is) or vice versa using a Live CD and mounting both drives.

Looks like that 3.5.19 version is still possible: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-mozilla-1.9.1-l10n/ Yeah, I'm starting to suspect we may see one or two more updates

Under Release Notes: I had the Word Viewer 2003 working a while back:

Firefox 3.5.18 is now available (released on March 19, 2011): http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/3.5.18/win32/ Click the directory for the language you prefer. This will likely be the last of the 3.5 series releases as Firefox 4 went final today.

KernelEx and Firefox 3.6.9 Internet access
Steven W replied to Grem41's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
A quick Google Search about the WG511v2 and WG111v3 comes up with the following link: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/753/related/1 http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/12962/related/1 The advice on those pages mention 98SE (not first edition) and ME. I'd try to get the drivers to function before I'd install KernelEx. If the autorun still stops, try updating it from the Device Manager, pointing it to the proper files, either on the CD where extracted on the hard drive. Updated to include drivers for both devices. -
That's not exactly accurate, the 3.5.x branch is still being updated. I believe Mozilla keeps updating the current release as well as the previous. There's been some delay with the release of 4.0, so 3.5.x is still being updated. As a matter of fact, you can get 3.5.17 now: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html Even their site is misleading, it states "Firefox 3.5.x will be maintained with security and stability updates until August 2010." 3.5.17 was released March 1, 2011: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/3.5.17/releasenotes/

Could we please have someone put up a "sticky" post about Java? Please!? Hoping some will, here's a bit of advice: Mention the last officially working versions for 95, 98 and ME. Have a walk-through (perhaps with pictures) about how to get the latest version to install on 98 and ME. Mention the fact that the Next-gen plugin needs disabled in the Control Panel. (Probably needs the plugin folder renamed too). Inform folks that (at least as of now) that Firefox 3.6.x and 4.x aren't going to work. 3.5.x and Seamonkey (as of now) are. Find out if KernelEx is absolutely required for the latest Java ( I don't think that it is).

minor firefox issues Windows me
Steven W replied to RocketLauncher's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
RocketLauncher, would you be willing to try SeaMonkey? I am assuming you're using KernelEx. It hasn't given me any of the grief Firefox 3.x series releases did on the 9x system. http://www.seamonkey-project.org/ I think you have to change compatibility mode to Win2K on the install and Seamonkey.exe to install and use. -
