  1. I have some files here on a CD that I made back when MS officially stopped supporting Win98SE, I think it was everything that was needed to update the system that I was running, and other stuff like .NET framework, Netmeeting, Microsoft Agent, Runtimes for programming languages, etc, etc.. I packaged much of the stuff into zip files that had a bat file to start installing many of the updates, the goal was to update a system with as few restarts as necessary. I had a few that I kept separate, like IE 6 sp1, WMP 9, and also had some of MDGx's unofficial updates from the time. I think I kept official and unofficial updates separated. If several people are interested I might start going through it this weekend and see what I have here, post a list, see what needs to be further updated and eventually upload stuff somewhere, I guess having a few downloads for official updates and linking to MDGx's site for unofficial stuff. BTW, many of the updates may be USA English.
  2. By the way the Daylight Savings Time update probably needs updated, at least for Russian users: http://support.microsoft.com/gp/cp_dst I think the official downloads are here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2570791
  3. It's been a while since I've installed the older version. I'm curious if there's an updated msimg.dll included. I recall that some version of Opera suggested it and I put ME's version on my 98SE.
  4. Perhaps you should rename the file PlainOldFavourites
  5. I don't mean to sound offensive, but sounds like the guys on Craigslist may be smarter than the folks on eBay. Desktops have become a cheap commodity.
  6. I may be mistaken, but I think the code in question says to implement this and if this doesn't work then use flash. Probably explains why IE works. I can't make that code work in Firefox although I could get similar (not the same) code to work on other sites. It doesn't seem to work with or without Flash. Some of the other sites I did get working came up with a security warning and had a checkbox not to display it in the future. One other site I saw had a button to select (highlight) all the code in the textbox. After seeing all of this, I can safely say that if I were to design a site that required similar features, there's the code I'd implement. My apologies Drugwash, I really thought those changes would work.
  7. For Firefox, if you're crazy enough to enable it: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Granting_JavaScript_access_to_the_clipboard
  8. Mozart, was speaking of using flash, that site does, (at least it has an else function that does) it's inside the javascript: http://www.autohotkey.com/forum/code.js look for this.copy
  9. Well, I just got PlainOldFavorites to work. Had to download the XPI to the hard drive extract it with 7-zip, edit the install.rdf: changed <em:maxVersion>7.0a1</em:maxVersion> to <em:maxVersion>8.0a1</em:maxVersion> rezipped the stuff, changed the zip extension to xpi, dragged and dropped it in an Aurora window and voila!
  10. PlainOldFavorites is incompatible with Aurora 7. I hope a new release is coming. All-in-all this build isn't bad. Just a couple of suggestions for those wanting to try it. Do a clean install, completely get rid of old FF. Tell it to never remember History in Tools -- Options-- Privacy. Disabling both autoscrolling and smooth scrolling in the Tools--Options--Advanced -- General Tab helped my scrolling. Thanks again felicitas!
  11. I am working on a spreadsheet for work, and discovered how to hide zero-value cells (simple checkbox), but unfortunately this did not hide barcodes with zero values. Does anyone know a simple way to do this?
  12. Not @ that computer at the moment, but I installed your build of 6, did a few tweaks (I'll list the ones I can remember) and it was only a bit slower than 3.6.x. I believe the biggest problem is processing javascript. The tweaks I recall: 1. Disabling Hardware acceleration. 2. I put it in permanent private mode (didn't bother me -- I don't like passwords and cookies saved anyway). 3. I changed the browser.sessionstore.interval in about.config to 9999999 (That's correct to the best of my knowledge; don't think I can just disable that anymore) 4. There's a setting in Options to disable suggestions in the URL bar -- suggestions were disabled. 5. There's a setting to limit the number of sites remembered (You can only hit the 'back button' so many times), in about.config (might be browser.sessionhistory.max_entries), I limited it to 6. 6. Installed PlainOldFavorites, Hid 'Bookmarks'. (Menueditor unnecessary, Thanks patclash) 7. This won't affect speed, but I like it http://suneilmohan.blogspot.com/2011/03/firefox-4-prevent-tab-scrolling.html 8. I may have disabled 'smooth scrolling' I am recalling this from memory, I may not be accurate and I may have performed other tweaks. I'll post when I get to that PC. Of course, there are probably others. Can't wait to try out your build of 7. Thanks felicitas! And yes, it was on real hardware, a 733 MHz Pentium 3 with 384 MB RAM.
  13. That may be the biggest culprit, right there. Although mine has 4 MB shared, it still sucks! It may be worth considering investing in a better card, even a used one, and disabling that P.O.S in the BIOS. Using Flashblock should certainly help when browsing.
  14. I'm curious as to what kind of hardware you have, ScrewUpgrading. The PC that I maintain that has Win 98 SE on it has a 733 MHz P3 processor and 384 MB of RAM. I notice it's a little slow when running modern browser like felicitas's Aurora build or Opera 11.5x, but it's not that bad. The only real gripe I have is with Flash performance, but I think a much better graphics card would help. It currently has an onboard Intel 82810 card. Of course it's currently hooked up to DSL. The last time I had dial-up was in the early 2000's and I thought it was too much hassle then. I have to at least partially agree with the others; sites today just aren't designed with dial-up in mind, of course, there's probably a limit to how low system requirements could be and one could still get decent performance out of modern software with KernelEx. Personally, I'd hate to be trying it on anything much lower than what the PC I spoke of has. Edit: I've also been toying with the idea of setting it up to dual-boot with Bodhi Linux.
  15. ScrewUpgrading, you can customize the toolbar, in Opera, and add a home button, I did it myself. I can't tell you the exact steps as I'm not on that PC (at a friend's home) now. I do recall that the interface to do that is a little clunky, IMO. DaveH, thanks for confirming the issue running more than one instance. Also, I've been having the no-network issue with the WMP plugin in Firefox, thought I had messed up WMP's configuration somehow, guess not. Like you, I'm able to view the source of the page and open the video/audio in WMP directly. Interesting what you find out if pay attention and talk about it.
  16. Forgive me if this has been mentioned, but I noticed that when Opera 11.50 is running and I fire up another instance (say double-clicking the Opera icon on the desktop), I get a crash. Basically, I can't run more than one instance of Opera.
  17. I think Gimp 2.2.17 works if you install a 2.6x version of GTk+ http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/old.html (this page has the downloads) Direct Links: GTK+ 2.6.10: http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-win/files/Obsolete/GTK%2B/GTK%2B%202.6.10-20050823/gtk%2B-2.6.10-20050823-setup.zip/download GIMP 2.2.17: http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-win/files/Obsolete/GIMP/GIMP%202.2.17/gimp-2.2.17-i586-setup.exe/download
  18. trevor89, you mentioned GoodOldFavorites extension, did you mean PlainOldFavorites? I found that this lets me use IE's favorites even adding links. Think this is what I'm going to set up as a work around until the bookmarks problem is fixed. Edit: This gets even better! The menu editor lets me remove 'Bookmarks' from the menu bar. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/plainoldfavorites/ http://menueditor.mozdev.org/
  19. I wish I would have seen this post earlier in the day, Was working on my friend's old 98 box. I had FF 4 up and running, although very poorly. I noticed in the options that there was a checkbox that could be used to disable use of hardware acceleration. Are there any build options to disable it completely? If so, that might take care of the need for the DirectX SDK.
  20. I recently installed XP on a friend's computer. He says (I can't verify this) that a bunch of files just vanished. I was looking and he intentionally place a folder called My Documents inside of his My Documents folder and all his files are in subfolders (subdirectories) under that. I think it's important to note that he was using Vista and something similar would happen where he'd end up with subdirectory after subdirectory named My Documents inside of his My Documents folder. Is there any known issues with doing this in Windows? Does it affect all versions?
  21. Well, it may have already been there.. it's called Wildlife 32 (probably explains the names of the other DLLs). I just changed the registry HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\Scrnsave.exe to point to Uwater.scr, and that's what came up. I was looking for underwater or uwater. So, problem solved. Thanks for the prompt reply dencorso. Hehe, I did try what you suggested a few minutes before changing the registry.
  22. Setting up a PC for a friend, she wants the Underwater Screensaver (I think it originally shipped with Windows 98). I recall that it was part of the Plus! For Kids pack, and you can download a Demo of that here that comes with the Underwater theme and screensaver: ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/deskapps/kids/kidplusd.exe Tried to run the exe, it whines that it's not meant for this version of Windows. Extracted it with 7-zip, Copied Uwater.scr and Uwater.dll to the System32 folder, double-clicked the SCR file and screen just went blank. So copied all these files to the System32 folder: kpsetup.dll Uwater.dll Uwater.scr wl32dll.dll wildlb32.dll Voila, double-clicking the SCR now works. One problem, it doesn't come up in XP's list of screensavers. When I bring up that dialog it's simply not there. I suppose, maybe, I could set up a folder with all the files extracted and try to get XP to use the theme file, but would prefer not to. Any ideas? Edit: kpsetup.dll is unnecessary.
  23. So you now have Second Edition installed? If so I'd try do what I suggest previously, install 7-zip, get this download: http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_udp_win9x_4.27 Save it to a new folder on the desktop, extract it's contents (Right-click, point to 7-zip--Extract files). Go into the device manager, look for stuff that has exclamation points, use the device manager and point to each of the six folders (the ones you just extracted) and see if Windows finds a suitable driver. (one of the folders is for Nvidia memory controllers). I'm assuming this computer is getting connected, if not use another PC, download 7-zip and the above file and burn a CD. Whether or not this works, look for anything labeled USB in the Device Manager, and choose Uninstall, Reboot, Go into the BIOS Setting and see if you can disable USB 2.0. Reboot see if things work better. I understand this may not work, but it's worth a shot. Edit: You may want to look for something like 'PCI Standard RAM Controller' in the device manager and even if it says it's working properly see if the INF in the MemCtl folder will update it. Further Edit: This is old, but may provide some clues: ftp://download.nvidia.com/Windows/nForce/1.05/nforce_win98se_1.05_install_guide.pdf
  24. Disreguard the previous contents of this post, you have the Update CD, I had the Upgrade CD. So, I guess you have no choice but to install FE first. I bought mine quite a while after it had been out, so I guess MS just started charging less for the Upgrade CD.
