  1. Guys, I know Xeno86 is working on getting Bookmarks and History, etc to work with the native builds. I see he hasn't gotten there quite yet. I just finished a build, that's similar to the last, but I updated to Sqlite 3.79, and modified it's makefile in FF to include the OMIT_WAL compilation option. I had to mod sqlite.c to address this issue: http://www.sqlite.org/src/timeline?r=omit-wal-fix&nd&c=2011-11-08%2015:06:05 If you download the my source mods, the contents of folder labeled sqlite goes in the mozilla-release\db\sqlite3\src directory of the Firefox 8 source code. the download links are at the top, in the first post. I left the old post there. If someone would test and see if Bookmarks and/or History function, I'd appreciate it.
  2. Oh well, I had my doubts. I guess we can still use the tricks we discovered in felicitas build of FF7, (PlainOldFavorites), getting WebGL going, etc. So it's not completely useless. I have a few other ideas that I'm going to try to implement, but that obviously takes time. Thanks for testing and letting me know loblo!
  3. Fixed the link. So, Bookmarks and History still don't function?
  4. Updated: January 07, 2012 5:30 A.M EST This is my latest attempt to make a build of Aurora(Firefox) that, in conjunction with KernelEx, overcomes the non-functional bookmarks and history issues. I've updated to the 8.0.1 source code. Need someone to test it as I don't have immediate access to a PC running 98/98SE/ME with KernelEx. As usual, I won't be responsible for anything bad happening. Please do a clean install remove all old Firefox/Aurora installations (including settings/preferences) I just made this build and am now focusing in one modifying sqlite: Here's a link to the exe: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?o2uau3941dljmoo To recreate the source: 1. Download the full 8.0.1 source from Mozilla 2. Download this and extract the files to the source directory 'mozilla-release\db\sqlite3\src' replacing files as necessary. 3. Replace sqlite3.c in the same directory as above with this one
  5. Which one? I believe you can get Calibri and Cambria from the Word Viewer 2003. I think you can just extract them from the installer. Nevermind, you have them both I should have known you'd be on top of it.
  6. ScrewUpgrading, FWIW, a few years ago a friend of mine was wanting a dial-up ISP, I help him decide on Basic ISP, part of the reason being that they did not require any special software to connect: http://www.basicisp.net/ I'd suggest reading over their terms and, obviously, checking if they have a number that's local for you. Edit: There's also 550 access: http://www.550access.com/
  7. I'm just mentioning this as an FYI, I see sourceforge_dot_net/projects/guliverkli/ is mentioned, but not the slightly updated: http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli2/. This is always the version I go for. I'm not really crazy about the way MPC_HC tries to roll it all together. And yeah, there's a 9x version there.
  8. Sadly, I did read them. I guess I just didn't process it. Thank you.
  9. Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but I'd like to know if it's possible to set WIN95CMD.EXE as the default command interpreter in Windows 98? Would the Shell command in config.sys allow for that? Would Windows still boot? What would the consequences be?
  10. Yeah, as Jaclaz said any word processor and I'd recommend PDFCreator: http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/ After you install PDFCreator go into the Control Panel -- Printers or Printers and Faxes and make sure it is set up to use the size of paper you want. I alway have to change it to 8.5 X 11, US Letter after installing. Then when you want a PDF just choose print from your app, and use PDFCreator as the Printer. It will ask you where you want to Save the File, and provide some options. If you got some money to blow you might look at Atlantis Word Processor. Be warned though it doesn't support tables or wrapping text around graphics: http://www.atlantiswordprocessor.com/en/ You may want to check this out too: http://freeocr.net/
  11. As for KernelEx -- Look at this topic Here's a quote, that I think is relavent: At the same time it will allow you to run a much more modern browser that would include security fixes As for what you'd be able to run check here: and here: http://kernelex.sourceforge.net/wiki/Category:Compatible_applications As for decorso's and rloew's ideas and patches your just kind of going to have to figure out for yourself. If your setting up a new computer with Win98/SE/ME you should find out if it has a SATA hard drive/ More than 512 MB of RAM for instance. If you need some help I'd just start a new thread, gather as much info as I could and simply ask, folks here are nice they'll help if they can. As for the NTFS stuff I don't think you can install 98 on it, but there are some things that will allow you to access a partition with it as the file system. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
  12. I agree whole-heartedly! There are no one-size-fits-all solutions.
  13. I don't mean to be offensive or to start an endless discussion over semantics, but that's a bit of a stretch. Take for example the ability to open JPEGs and GIFs in paint I was asking you about, that's a nicety, not an absolute necessity. Don't get me wrong I'm glad it's there, just pointing it out. I take your point about things that MS doesn't include, however I think we could agree that in addition to your pack that folks using 98 SE on real hardware (especially those using it get online) should, at minimum, get vital system updates and patches for whatever version of Internet Explorer they have, even if they don't use IE. A friend of mine says that opinions are like rear-ends (using a polite term here), everyone has one. Mine regarding JET, MDAC, VB and VC runtimes is that since they're already on the system, you may as well update them. As I stated I really think an unofficial update with all runtimes that work on 98 SE (without KernelEx) would be nice. I concede, that's only my opinion. This post is really about Windows Update v4 being dead. As I stated before part I what I'm trying to provide here is what it would have said you needed. I guess it morphed into a bit more than that.
  14. bphlpt, I'm not trying to pass myself off as some expert or anything, but what I'm going for is something that fills in for the now defunct WindowsUpdate website and maybe a bit more. I have some questions about all of this too. For instance, is it worthwhile to have the MSXML updates? Is Version 3 necessary if Version 4 is installed? You Probably wouldn't have seen those on the WindowsUpdate site, probably wouldn't have seen the the runtime libraries updates either. Speaking of the runtime libraries, an "unoffical runtime libraries update would be pretty cool, maybe a KernelEx starter or extension pack with the common ones needed for it too would be nice. Part of my goal too is to open a discusssion about all of this, hoping a refined method for those wanting to install a system from scratch, who want the latest IE 6, DirectX, runtime libraries, WMP, necessary security patches and updates and how to accomplish it, ideally with as little pain as possible. As for the install sequence, as of today, without any better info, If I had to install a system from scratch, I'd use the files above in that order. Restarting the system when they say to. I'm going to post my BAT files too, but issue a stern warning that I'm not sure that I'd use them. As I said in post 65, I refined this at one point or another, so be warned. As for the DotNETframework, if I knew I wanted some version of them I'd get them and any updates and install them I don't think it would really matter when, but personally, I'd install before Gape's/PROBLEMCHYLD's Service Pack. I decided not to upload them because they're not necessary unless you have something that requires them.
  15. What PROBLEMCHYLD is doing is brain surgery compared to what I'm doing.
  16. I'm going to start uploading the files I have or point to links (This post will be edited a few times). I'm not going to include my BAT files, but will put a copy in here for anyone who wants them. As you can see for the list in post #65, most of these are USA English. I'm skipping the unofficial updates as links are provided in post #66 and, as discussed, some of those will be provided in PROBLEMCHYLD's update of Gape's service pack 1. IE6 SP1 (To install execute ie6setup.exe): MediaFire 2. This is all files listed in red text in post #65 (for a very safe method to install, run them in the order listed in that post): MediaFire 3. Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.8 SP1 4. WMP 9 5. Everything in blue text from post #65 (note I've decided to leave out DirectX and the DotNet Framework, again for a safe-install, execute in the order of above post): MediaFire 6. DirectX 9.0c 7. Here's everything in orange text from post #65 (to install the MSGames Update, extract the cab, right-click on the INF file and choose install): MediaFire 8. Everything thing here and below is stuff I'd want to have: Tweakui 1.33: majorgeeks.com 9. Adaptec ASPI Drivers: Download.com 10 http://www.mdgx.com/files/DXM9X.EXE - see post 66 - 70 above! 11. http://www.mdgx.com/spx/MDIE6CU.EXE (you can read about it here: ) 12. Gape's Service Pack (With PROBLEMCHYLD's updates when finalized). Below are the contents of the BAT files I used to install some of this stuff, as of now I'm not recommending them because I'm not absolutely certain that it will properly install the updates (read post 65). Hopefully we can get some feedback. For now if you want these updates I'd ran them in the order that they are installed in. This first one goes with the files from #2 above. 17. JorgeA, I agree an all-in-one update would be nice. That's kind of what that AutoPatcher is that someone's mentionting is, but it totally screwed my system in the past. I don't necessarily think it's the best approach to take. The stuff mentioned in my post (#65) above were what I downloaded around the time MS stopped supporting Windows 98 SE. I should mention Gape's service Pack has always worked well for me, but it doesn't have *everything*.
  18. Is there a way to check if IE 6 SP 1 is installed from a BAT file?
  19. So basically everything in my "unofficial" list except DXM9X.EXE is included in your pack?
  20. Okay, now the unofficial updates that are on the CD, I'm providing the updated versions where appropriate: 1. http://www.mdgx.com/files/Q918547.EXE (info: http://www.mdgx.com/files/U918547.TXT) 2. http://www.mdgx.com/files/OLEUP.EXE (Polish and Italian updates here: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#OLE) 3. http://www.mdgx.com/files/DXM9X.EXE (Requires IE6 - Polish, Italian and IE5 available here: http://www.mdgx.com/dx.htm) 4. http://www.mdgx.com/files/HHUPD.EXE (info: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#HHU) 5. http://www.mdgx.com/files/RICHED9X.EXE (info and Polish download: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#RTF) 6. http://www.mdgx.com/files/TTFPAK.EXE (info: http://www.mdgx.com/add.htm#TTF) Some of these will be available in PROBLEMCHYLD's update of Gape's Service Pack
  21. Sweet! Of course I forgot to ask, export (saving) too?
  22. Does that include the ability to open at least the common graphic types (JPEG, GIF) in MS Paint? I think MDGx has that in his download: http://www.mdgx.com/files/GRPHFLTS.EXE
  23. Okay, looking at this CD I have things divided up, Bear in mind this stuff was for 98SE The first thing I did is install IE 6 SP1 (install separately) Next, I have an update package that includes (listed in the order that I have the BAT file installing them): 811630USA8.EXE 823559USA8.EXE 323172USA8.EXE 273991USA8.EXE 259728USA8.EXE 256015usa8.exe 245729us8.exe 238453US8.EXE q313829.exe Windows98-KB891711-ENU.EXE 323255USA8.EXE 329115USA8.EXE 888113USA8.EXE Windows98-KB896358-ENU.EXE IE-KB891781-EN.exe Windows98-KB908519-ENU.EXE Windows-KB913433-ENU.exe MSJav.exe OE6.0sp1-KB837009-x86-ENU.exe IE6.0sp1-KB916281-Windows-98-ME-ENU.exe IE6.0sp1-KB918439-Windows-98-ME-ENU.exe Windows98-KB918547-ENU.exe Windows9X-KB917344-enu.exe InstMsiA.exe Then I have MDAC_TYP_281.EXE (install separately) Then WMP 9 (install separately) Then I have one more package with the following files 242975USA8.EXE 243450USA8.EXE 260067USA8.EXE 273017USA8.EXE 4756us8.exe euro.exe MSagent.exe Nm30.exe MDAC_Fix.exe WindowsMedia9-KB917734-Win9x-ENU.exe WM9Codecs9x.exe wmp6cdcs.exe vbrun60sp6.exe VisualBasic6-KB896559-v1-ENU.exe Jet40SP8_9xNT.exe dotnetfx.exe DXSETUP.exe (see note below) START.WAV (see note) unicows.dll (see note) unicows.pdb (see note) Note I have the DirectX setup extracted in this folder, DXSETUP.exe starts it. The BAT file copies Start.wav to the Windows\Media folder and the unicows files to both the system and system32 folders. I'm going to look through everything else I have and see if what's there is official or not. I think these are official too: KB904706-DX9-ENU.exe gdidettool.exe MSGAMES.cab (some kind of update for sol.exe, freecell, winmine, mshearts, and cards.dll) IE6.0sp1-KB823353-x86-ENU.exe 273727usa8.exe Microsoft xml CORE SERVICES (MSXML) 3.0 Service PACK 5 Microsoft xml CORE SERVICES (MSXML) 4.0 kb887606_msxml4.0_x86.exe and a couple of vcredist_x86.exe (I believe the latest on the CD is 2005). After going through this stuff, I realize that I later made some modifications and saved it on another CD that got destroyed, I could really kick myself. A few things that I can see: MSAJAVA isn't necessary and should probably be removed from any system. The DotNet Framework is version 2.0, obviously not necessary and I believe there's at least a SP1. Start.wav came from the Start Sound Navigation Update, I found it easier just to copy the file then use the update. Same with Unicows, just easier to store in my zip and copy the files. Netmeeting should probably just get yanked from any system too, I'm sure using it is another necessary risk. I'm going to check the unofficial updates that I have and just link to MDGx's site (he'll probably have newer versions anyway).
  24. Perhaps I should have been a bit clearer, they're either USA English or some International version that includes USA English. I'd suspect mostly just USA English. As for users preferring or needing other languages, perhaps once we get all the info straight, someone could put together downloads for said languages.
