  1. Just a guess; lzexpand.dll is corrupted. You could try changing the shell to progman.exe (please note that is not program.exe). Quick directions: get a 98 boot disk at the prompt type: edit c:\windows\system.ini Edit the "shell=" line to read: shell=progman.exe You can use that to see if there are cab files in the Windows/Sysbackup Directory. If so you may have to use a DOS based program like extract.exe to get the file you want out of the cab. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/132913
  2. I propose that this post be stickied.
  3. Curious, what version of IE do you have installed now? Just a couple of thoughts you should probably get (if you don't already have): http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en (DUN 1.3 update; I think you must have this to install ver 1.4) http://download.microsoft.com/download/win...us/dun14-95.exe (DUN 1.4) http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownlo...en/rootsupd.exe (root certificate update; assuming this is the latest) (Sockets 2 update) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/182108 http://browsers.evolt.org/download.php?/ie...SP2/ie55sp2.exe (IE 5.5 sp2) (Updates for IE 5.5 sp2) http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm#IE55 If you're planning to use the Active Desktop, I strongly recommend install IE 4 and connecting it to the net once before upgrading to a new version of IE. (http://browsers.evolt.org/download.php?/ie/32bit/4.01_SP2/ie401sp2.exe)

  5. I have an Olympus C3030 Zoom digital camera. To get images off of the camera I supposedly need to install Olympus's Camedia software. I ran across this recently: http://groups.google.com/group/de.alt.rec....4eca67343d36ab1 It's for XP, mentions opening srusbusd.inf in notepad and removing some semicolons. It looks to me you could fix more than Olympus cameras. Are these cameras supported using your native USB drivers? If not could they be added?
  6. With stuff like this, you don't know until you try.
  7. I'm kind of curious about something. You said DOS sees the last slot, but Windows doesn't. What if you configured the autoexec.bat and config.sys files in Windows the same way it is in DOS?
  8. I've given this a bit more thought... Sounds like a Win95 problem, with Dos seeing it and all.
  9. Check the BIOS and see if there is a access time or speed setting for the memory set it to 70ns. This is "access speed" so the higher the number the slower the speed. You may also look and see if the BIOS will allow enabling/disabling Parity Checking, if so disable it. Mixing and matching SIMMS just will not work sometimes.

    go-oo

http://www.go-oo.org This link will take you to a special build of OpenOffice.org that has a few features the official version does not. They claim it has OOXML support (I'd say it has Office 2007 docx, xlsx, etc. support). I have tested a few simple docx files (on XP) and everything except graphics have worked. They claim that it is also faster than the official OOo. Do note that they recommend dual licensing under the LGPL and CDDL for the majority of their code. If you go to the download page, the link for the Windows version is a bit dated, going here http://go-oo.mirrorbrain.org/stable/win32/ instead will allow you to get the latest 2.4.1 build. I have not tested this version on Win98 as I'm not running it at the moment. The latest version as of this posting is GoOo-en-US-2.4.1-5.exe (I guess you install a language pack if need be). If someone could test and let us know, I'm sure it would be appreciated. I know some are disappointed with the OOo losing Win98 support. I think this version could fill some gaps for a while. Hopefully, it will work with 98 and there will be a few additional updates.
  11. You might try removing the CDrom drive from the device manager and rebooting. It should be auto-detected. *Might* fix the issue.
  12. How could I forget this one: http://www.photoscape.org/ My friends have so much fun adding quote balloons to pics from their digital cameras. Hehe. Just noticed it's my two-year anniversary!
  13. Noticed this thread and decided to add one of my faves: http://www.artweaver.de/ I'm sure that 0.5.1 worked, haven't tested 0.5.2, but fairly certain it will still work
  14. I didn't realize that Abiword depends on GTK+. Perhaps UberKern/KernelEX will provide hope.
  15. I was unable to find any confirmation of the fact the OO 3 does not supports Windows 98. On the other hand some download centers are telling it supports Windows 95 as well.??? Here you go: http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/OOoRelease30_Readme System requirements * Microsoft 2000, XP or Vista * Pentium compatible PC * 256 MB RAM (512 MB RAM recommended) * 650 MB including Sun JRE (Chinese, Japanese, and Korean versions: 700 MB, multi-language version: 750 MB) available hard disk space during installation * 500 MB Disk space needed after installation is complete when deleting temporary installer files. * 800x600 resolution or higher, at least 256 colors
  16. http://www.abisource.com/release-notes/2.6.3.phtml Note for Windows 95, 98 and ME users: AbiWord 2.6 is currently not available for your operating system. Please continue using AbiWord 2.4.6 instead. I'm reading OpenOffice.org 3.0 will no longer support these systems either. *sigh*
  17. Is it possible to get Gnumeric running with UberKern??? http://www.gnome.org/projects/gnumeric/ My understanding was the it was GTK+ that prevented it from working with Win98. I see libcairo-2.dll is included.
  18. Has anyone tried Madotate? http://madotate.en.softonic.com/ I never have, and am not presently running 98. It seems that I ran across something similar a few year ago. Any ideas? The author's site is Japanese (if anyone's interested): http://www.ksky.ne.jp/~seahorse/mtate2/
  19. As far as Anti-virus I'd try Avast 4.8 Home Edition first: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html (you'll need to register via email, it's free) As an alternative try Antivir Personal: http://www.free-av.com/en/download/1/avira..._antivirus.html
  20. Have you checked out the SeaMonkey Project? As of now it list the requirements as: Windows 95*, 98, 98SE, Windows Me, Windows NT 3.51, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows 2003 (DCOM needed for 95) # Intel pentium class processor (233 MHz or faster recommended) 100 MB of free hard disk space (significantly less space is required if you reduce the cache size) "SeaMonkey has inherited the successful all-in-one concept of the original Netscape Communicator and continues that product line based on the modern, cross-platform architecture provided by the Mozilla project." Communicator was essentially Navigator with a few extras. Of course, the compatibility with Win9x will probably end soon, but hasn't yet. http://www.seamonkey-project.org/ I guess I was composing this message when the person above was too!
  21. My thanks to all that replied, particularly CharlotteTheHarlot. I'm sure I'll find all the info useful. IYVU9_32.DLL, what do you bet that's the one responsible for handling YV12? I never even thought of checking the Win98SE CD cab files. Could be some inf files there that could be helpful. You guys rock!
  22. I thought older versions were included too. It's strange to me because I've never had to install anything to get Media Player Classic to play DVDs. If someone could look at my post above and tell me if that's would make REG file for Win98, I'd appreciate it!
  23. I'm afraid my post may not be as clear as it needs to be. I still wanna know; Aren't Indeo Codecs installed by default with 98SE? Is there some reason they wouldn't be? Second, is this a valid REG file for Win9x? (please forgive the "wrapping" of text.) 24. I recently installed 98SE on a friends PC. I downloaded Media Player Classic and tried to play a DVD. MPC whined there was no YV12 codec. I found several solutions, Ligos Indeo codecs 5.11 worked the best out of all I tried. Question: Aren't older versions of these codecs supposed to be installed by default on 95 - ME? I also ran across a patch for XP that includes version 5.10 of these codecs. I'm not interested in the patch itself but, it contains an INF file that I would like to mod a section of to make a REG file out of. Update.inf has a Product.Add.Reg section that I think could be modded. http://download.microsoft.com/download/whi...SP2_x86_ENU.exe Would someone with the know-how please look at it for me. I thought if you deleted all the entries that start: HKLM,SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Hotfix\ and modded the remaining "HKLM,SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\" to read "HKLM,SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\" losing NT Obviously add Regedit4 at the beginning. Would anything else have to change to use this in Win98? Yes I know there are newer versions available!
  25. Thanks for the prompt reply. I should have know MDGX would have it covered!
