  1. I just extracted files and replaced on my friend's PC...I have an issue: Every time I'd try to post in this forum, I'd be sent back to the forums front page. Had to do this in Firefox. Going through and resetting many IE settings to default helped (reduced frequency) but did not completely eliminate. Should I be seeing "Administrator Approved", on Win98 in this box?
  2. I'm curious if there are any patches or updates for Word Viewer 97, Excel Viewer 97, and PowerPoint Viewer 97? Anyone know?
  3. Thanks for the prompt reply...you answered my next question regarding whether or not this should be included in a cumulative update.
  4. The Win 2K patch for the exploit that's made the news lately: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...05-7d5370263c1b Are its contents compatible with Win98? I posted this in the topic "New IE6-SP1 vulnerability". Perhaps I wasn't clear enough about what it was.... It's important too, so I don't want it missed.
  5. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...05-7d5370263c1b Here it is (for Win 2K SP4). I Hope its contents are compatible. BTW, you might be interested to know this exploit was reported to MS in September 2009: http://news.cnet.com/8301-27080_3-10439004-245.html
  6. I don't think there's a definitive answer for you. I've read the exploit makes use of javascript, I'd personally disable that in IE too.
  7. Yeah, Microsoft's decision to tie IE to Windows had to be one of the worst decisions ever made. This exploit is just one in a long list of examples why.
  8. I assumed wrong, my bad. As for the other, likely more serious, problem there's no patch yet. Someone was asking for code. I found this: http://blog.metasploit.com/2010/01/reprodu...ie-exploit.html Not sure how useful it will be for 9x/ME.
  9. I was not implying you were doing anything untoward. I thought you possibly had created or were sent such a document, as suggested by jaclaz.
  10. There's a download for Win 2K: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en I'm assuming the only file of interest to be extracted is fontsub.dll, version 5.0.2195.7348. *** Please note: I'm not saying this is or is not compatible with win9X or ME***
  11. RodgerOver, I got the same error message you got when I attempted to open an encrypted (password protected) document. Apparently that's a feature the converter does not support.
  12. Hey all, I got a message from a user of Office 2000, saying he was having trouble opening Office 2007 documents that were converted using the ODF-converter-integrator. I looked at the system requirements for Sun's ODF plugin and the latest version 3.1 says it requires Windows 2000 or above. There is an older version available, 1.2 (don't ask me what happened to 2.x) that says it should work with 98. http://cds.sun.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfini...ndows-en-US.exe I've done some minor testing (dug out that old Office 2000 CD) and it will open my documents created in OpenOffice.org 3.1 (Note I'm using XP). With spreadsheets and presentations you have to load Excel/Powerpoint and choose File -- Import ODF.... Sun did not seem to think of template formats, you can change the extension on these to get them to open OTT -- ODT OTS -- ODS OTP -- ODP Just adding this in case anyone is interested.
  13. I'm glad to hear that Sumatra works...natively!? (that's kind of a surprise) You may be on to something with the color bits. My old PC that I gave to a friend has a video adapter that is only capable of 24 bit color. VLC (latest) with KernelEx wouldn't play videos until I switched it to 16 bit. I also have never had any success with Flash 10.
  14. I tried Ace Explorer, at first I thought I was looking at some kind of Kmeleon clone, turns out it's an IE Shell.
  15. Has anyone tried Sumatra PDF? I can't at the moment: http://blog.kowalczyk.info/software/sumatrapdf/index.html (Says it requires 2000 or later, might work with KEx?) It's based on (this is something else you may wish to try) mupdf. I can't quite make out the requirements on it: http://ccxvii.net/mupdf/ Sumatra is essiantilly MuPDF with a nice interface.
  16. Can you get the source code? Kidding. Seriously though, as far as we know there's no way to beat **that script**. The reg spoof works most of the time. So, you're correct it's probably good for most users. Are there other scripts out there that check components or registry entries?
  17. I don't think you get what I'm asking....I have read the post and I've known how to use the registry to spoof the user agent for years. I'm asking if modifying other registry entries, for example: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer and using a resource hacker to mod dll and exe files to report different version numbers...like iexplore.exe, for example could provide a better way. Essentially having IE 6 look as close to IE 8 as possible. as far as modding the DLL and EXE files look at what I did a few years ago to get that site to work: http://www.msfn.org/board/in2tv-and-more-win98-t82947.html of course the pics are gone! Geez. Point is, I was using XN Resource Editor to change version numbers of files.
  18. Some of you who've been here a while may remember that several years ago I modified some files from Windows Media Player on my system to make AOL's in2tv (which then used WindowsMedia, since switched to flash) site think that I was using WMP 10. I also spoofed the browser's user agent to make it think I was using XP. I used Xn Resource Editor, to make a couple of DLLs and Wmplayer.exe report a different version, then ran a command to make those version numbers update in the registry. Can something similar be done with IE? What do ***most*** of the scripts look for when checking browser version? Would this be as easy as modding a few files, and few registry entries? Would the entire installation need modded? Any ideas?
  19. Xeno86, I have a request for support for an application. The Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats. You can see from my post here how to make it install and that it already gets a bit more functional with KernelEX. http://www.msfn.org/board/compatibility-pa...ts-t140032.html Thanks.
  20. Okay, I'm back home now on my XP machine (my friend is running my old 98 machine) and wanted to tell you a bit more. Before I left my friend's home, I didn't have the PowerPoint Viewer installed. When I'd click a Pptx file it would open a save as dialog and come back a little while later with the same error message (shown above). I've done some reading and you don't have to have any of the viewers or Office installed for the converter to work. I don't have any on my XP machine, and the Save as dialog comes up and you can then pick a folder, but of course it works on XP (outputs an older Office format file). I tried to install SP1 for the Compatibility Pack on the 98 machine, not realizing there was a SP2. It failed, interestingly it fails exactly the same way on XP. I bet if you have this installed per my directions that the SP2 will simply work (without modding). I can't try it now since I don't have that computer; hopefully someone else can: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en If not I'll be on it tomorrow. I'm attaching a screenshot from XP, first I went to Windows Update after installing the Compatibility Pack here's what came up: Obviously we can ignore Service Pack One. Was also trying to get Wordconv.exe to work from the commandine couldn't get it to work at friends or here on XP. Apparently there are a few other tools that will convert file from a commandline. I'm too tired to work with it tonight...but if someone is interested: http://channel9.msdn.com/wiki/OfficeDeploy...MContributions/ scroll down to bottom of page. Update : The Service pack 2 runs, but fails. It leaves a log file in the "C:\Windows\Temp" directory. I can't get the command line stuff to work either. The pointer changes to an hour glass momentarily.
  21. Here's a shot of the change in Orca: and here's the file that gets the pretty icon (test.docx) and the O byte file that gets created when I click the pretty icon: I set preferences in Explorer to show all files and all extensions. and here's the error message I get after double clicking test.docx:
  22. Forgive me if this is a bit rambling. In a post here: http://www.msfn.org/board/office-2003-win98-t139056.html, Marius '95 got Office 2003 to install, but not work on 98 I figured out a very similar technique will install the Word Viewer 2003, it also doesn't function but installs. Today I've been playing with the Compatibility Pack. Thinking that the older Word, Excel and PowerPoint Viewers could work with the thing, it essentially converts Office 2007 files to the older formats on opens them (at least it did on my XP machine before I reinstalled OS). I recommend having the Viewers, or perhaps Office, installed first! If you want to install Viewers, I suggest removing KernelEx first as I did (more on that later). I downloaded the file here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en I then extracted its contents with 7-zip. I used Orca to modify the Launch Condition of O12Conv.msi to read: Version9X=410 Saved the file and it installs. It give a Docx file (and all other file with Office 2007 extensions) on the desktop a pretty office icon too (I'm excited at this point). I double click the Docx file nothing happens. I remember that I have KernelEX uninstalled, so I reinstall it. Double click again, this time I get a message, "The converter failed to save the file". There is also a file that appears on the Desktop, $éc, a 0 byte file. I tried to reinstall the converter with KernelEx running, and the results are the same. I'm thinking this is looking a bit promising. Hoping some of the Gurus here can help. I'll attach a couple of screenshots to show what I'm talking about.
  23. MDGx, you way want to read RetroOS's post here: http://www.msfn.org/board/kernelex-4-0-fin...6-page-240.html I was able to get the Version 6 Update 16 of Java to work (even before I installed KernelEx). He basically follows your advice for Update7 and once it's installed Opens Java from the Control Panel and unchecks Enable the next-generation Java Plug-in (requires browser restart), from the Advanced Tab. It's on that page sorry having trouble with the link. My apologies! I am, of course, talking about the JRE. You may wish to look at the MDGx.
  24. FYI, the same technique works with Word Viewer 2003. I also removed CheckServicPackLevel. Installs but doesn't work.
