  1. I was just looking at the timezone info, particularly timezone.inf. I think the info here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2779562 can be plugged into the file simply by deleting the '/' character and the extra space in the hex values. I'm curious too if the information such as "Starting in 2012, Bahia Standard Time will no longer have DST" could be used to remove unnecessary registry entries. Also, looking over older updates, it looks to me as though Egypt and Somoa may have inadvertently been skipped in previous unofficial timezone updates: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2633952 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2570791 I'm going to paste the text of what I've done for this so far. Note that I haven't attempted to use this to remove unnecessary entries. I understand this is relatively unimportant as you could simply shut off DST and manually change the clock if needed.
  2. I don't wanna get too far off topic, but I did find this while looking. I know it's not what you're looking for. I never saw it before, says it compatible with 98 SE or later: http://transfers.ds.microsoft.com/ftm/
  3. PROBLEMCHYLD, after quite a bit of searching, the closest thing I can find is Windows Easy Transfer (I don't know if it includes drivers), but the earliest version I can find is 6.xx. I wondering if the earlier version were called something else. The binaries I found are named 'tfrcable_x86.exe'. Interesting they used "cable" in the name.
  4. As-Easy-As Spreadsheet for DOS version 5.7 is available for free. From the TRIUS forums: You will need a serial number during installation, it and more info can be found here: http://www.triusinc.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=10
  5. Did you ever try limiting memory usage in the Win.ini file? [386Enh] MaxPhysPage=30000 [vcache] MaxFileCache=393216 The bits in brackets are sections of the Win.ini file, add them if needed, just add the lines if the sections exist. Edit (More Info): http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=253912
  6. Ah! I see! A memory upgrade could cause the issue. Good thinking.
  7. Okay, I'm going to ask a question. If people are installing SP3, aren't they probably past dealing with the sort of issues that the VxD fixes? Is it even worth the time to put the file in SP3?
  8. I agree. You can see in that post that I'm having issues with Firefox 10.x ESR, although I suspect part of that is poor coding on Mozilla's part. A Google search backs up that assumption (hardware acceleration isn't being truly disabled). I suspect other issues would come up for graphic intensive games, and serious high-res videos. That's not to mention the sound card, even though hdaudbus.sys is working, the sound card still isn't even detected. Even if it were detected there'd still be that matter of drivers. So yeah, it's not perfect.
  9. Quick thought, reinstall and skip updating that particular driver.
  10. FWIW, I just added a reply over there: Post #34 of Installing 98SE on Emachines w3629 The big part of getting that machine/mobo booting with some SATA drives is playing with the IDE Channel settings. I'm putting this here because there is obviously some overlap in the topics.
  11. submix8c, I almost forgot about you. I got to looking at that inf file and as far as the hard drive goes, the thing does not copy any files. It just makes the controllers show a name in the registry and device manager. So, as long as your using a partition that's 137 GB or less, all you have to do if you have a SATA hard drive is start and run the install until the thing won't boot, get into safe mode, and you'll have to play with the IDE Channel settings of the hard drive controllers. Mine had two controllers showing in the device manager the top one has to be set to 'Only Primary IDE Channel enabled' and the bottom one to 'Only Secondary IDE Channel enabled'. That may vary depending on your machine's setup. Here's a screenshot (not mine!) showing where the setting is: Once you have the proper setting for the hard drive and reboot, setup will continue. I strongly suspect an IDE hard drive (using a partition with 137 GB or less) would simply just boot. I was making it more difficult than it had to be in my previous attempts. To make sure we're on the same page here, I have exactly 1 GB RAM, more than that and I'd have to work around it (according to dencorso). I have the default settings used in the BIOS. The only thing that I can think of that might worth noting is an option for SATA speed. I have Disabled, Force SATA I and Force SATA II. Mine is set to Disabled. That seems to be the default. No need to disable hyperthreading, Windows 98SE seems to be fine with it enabled. Once you get fully booted then you can use that file to perform updates, just install 7 zip, extract the files, go into the device manager and update device drivers one at a time by pointing to the !UPDATE.W98 folder. If you use VBEMP driver, make sure to set up a _default.pif, to force fullscreen of the command prompt/dos-based windows: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/131877 NOTE the underscore in that file name!
  12. The question that comes to my mind is how do "we" define compatible. "Working" and having proper drivers for the chipset designed for a particular OS can be two different things. FYI, my Intel 945GCT-M3 motherboard is working just fine (98SE) with the only exception being the soundcard. I did not mention that I found a driver for the NIC card in the post linked to. I have to use Bearwindows VBEMP 9x driver for the video card and the hard drive is in compatibility mode (which could be remedied with Rloew's SATA patch or an IDE hard drive). IMO, that's compatible.
  13. If this is 98 Second Edition or ME, try this: http://windows98.ic.cz/chipset/intelinf.zip I'm using it on my PC, think it may help with yours too. I think your motherboard using Intel 915g Chipset which doesn't have official 98 drivers. Here's Google's translation for that file: You'll obviously need to extract the zip to use it. I'd try updating missing drivers by pointing to the !UPDATE.W98 directory, if that doesn't work then try the WIN98SE/WINME directories. If it's 95/98 First Edition, you may be outta luck.
  14. Nevermind, Windows 2000 sp4 compatibility mode fixes it. It's been a while since I've used 98 SE so much, forgetting all the little details.
  15. Does anyone know what would be causing the issue in the attached screenshot? It's not the skin -- does the same thing with or without it.
  16. submix8c, I got the issue covered. I'm using Opera 12.02 as my main browser and I'll get an old version of SeaMonkey for issues (like using Java, etc). Right now, I'm more curious as to why later editions of FF behave this way when using VBEMP and if anything can be done about it. FWIW, I've use FF8 on another system with 98 SE on it and it was slower than 3, but it was acceptable to me.
  17. All the talk on USB keyboards and mice probably explains the issues I'm having (see my W3629 topic). Not too concerned as you're aware of the issue. One other very minor suggestion, work on a better start up and shutdown logo. The ones included look awful on a wide screen monitor. Otherwise, nice work!
  18. http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#SPX mdgx has some of Gape's old version. I'd personally recommend 3.0 final.
  19. What about portcls.sys version 5.00.2195.6906 and sysaudio.sys version 5.00.2195.6906. Would you mind checking those for me? I could upload if need be.
  20. Well, I've gotten the port for the built-in sound card to work. I download uaa.zip from Intel. This looks to be the same thing as kb888111.exe for Windows 2000 sp4. I modified the inf files for that specific OS, changing the 'signature' from Windows NT to CHICAGO, removing the block (last character of each INF file), and saved them as text (as opposed to unicode) using Wordpad. I then went into the Device Manager and updated the driverless PCI card (pointing it to the folder with the modded files) and it seems to have worked. I would have thought it'd fine a new sound card. Not so... I'll keep digging. The device is now listed as 'Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio'. Don't think it'll matter, but I do have KernelEx installed. Edit: Bus Driver, lol!
  21. Since my last post I have tried version 8, it suffters the same way. While I'm here, Curious if there was an equivalent fix to KB888111 for 98SE and ME?
  22. I mentioned previously having trouble with Firefox (ESR 10.07) rendering, if I shut off hardware acceleration (through properties from the desktop), it works fine. I'm going to try unchecking the 'Use hardware accelerarion when available' in Firefox fox options, turning it back on through Windows and see what happens. I'll edit this post when I do. No dice. I don't know if this is related to my use of VBEMP or what.
