Exlorer.exe crashes when you log in
Steven W replied to daveydoom's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
I have ran across this problem so many times in 9x and ME. My advice here works about 95% of the time. Find out what version of IE you are running. Download a full setup for that version or IE 6 sp1. (you may have to burn it to a CD using another computer). Change the system.ini file to shell=progman.exe. Navigate to the IE setup and run. Reboot. Modify system.ini back to shell=explorer.exe, reboot again. When you boot you may be asked to reboot one more time. All is usually fixed. You may need to reinstall updates to whatever version of IE that you chose. NOTE: progman.exe, not program.exe (I have seen too many people get that confused) -
S.O.S. Internet Explorer 7.0 soon Required? S.O.S.
Steven W replied to legacykeeper's topic in Windows 9x/ME
You should be able to put this registry change into a .REG file for both cases, and double-click the proper one for which user-agent string you want. I have two reg files one puts the necessary info in and the other just removes it, I haven't used the one to remove, in a long time, because I have found no need to. -
S.O.S. Internet Explorer 7.0 soon Required? S.O.S.

IE's user agent strings can be changed in the registry. The information here doesn't give user agent info for IE 7 but points you in the right direction: http://www.pctools.com/guides/registry/detail/799/ I have used this "trick" in the past for sites that "required" Windows XP. Just a guess but on that page use MSIE 7.0 (instead of MSIE 5.5), and I would use Windows NT 5.1; (R1 1.1) for Platform (instead of Windows NT 5.0) I agree with others, designing sites like this is just stupid. I have left my platform as Windows XP on my 98 partion, the only drawback that I have found is WindowsUpdate site doesn't function properly. -
98MP10 = WMP10 XP + XP SP3 Killer Replacements
Steven W replied to MDGx's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Hey MDGX, I'm sure you remember my advice: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=82947 well it's no longer useful for those sites as you can read at the link above you may wish to remove the link from 98mp10.php. Thanks! -
You guys talking about VH1 just need to change your user agent in the browser that your using. see my post: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=82947 Just look at the bit about the user agent (there's a screen capture there too). For Firefox get this extension: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/59/ Under User agent add the following line: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; nl; rv:1.8) Gecko/20051107 Firefox/1.5.0.7 Leave the rest of the lines blank. Remember you can change the Agent for the current session only.

It's not a time-limited trial, trust me, you can get a discount on version 8. "Note, ignore the ‘time limited demo’ reference on this page. You’ll need to get your serial code from www.avanquest.co.uk/vnu/staroffice/register" Note the top of the page it's a "Full commercial download" Worth 60 pounds.

Read the article Philco.

Yes I know that OpenOffice.org is always free. If anyone would like StarOffice 7, and maybe a discount on StarOffice 8: http://www.computeractive.co.uk/vnunet/dow.../sun-staroffice read the article it will tell you how. Enjoy.

IE existed for win95, but it was installed separately, it was not integrated into the OS. IE 4 would allow you to opt-out of the "shell integration". It also wasn't necessary for the 5.x versions of IE.

You guy made me think of a comic strip: http://ars.userfriendly.org/cartoons/?id=20061104 Enjoy.

@LLXX You're correct; my mistake. The last time I used this was a few years ago it seemed very slow then. I just tried it out with Seamonkey. It' much improved. Thank you!

It's been a few year since I have messed with it. It's an IRC (Internet Relay Chat) program. I think that most folks who still use these would agree with me that mIRC is a better program and is still be developed however, it's not freeware. You can evaluate it free for 30 days: http://www.mirc.com/ Seamonkey includes chatzilla, IMHO it's a waste it's java based and always seemed very slow to me. If you google "opensource IRC" several results come up which you may want to check out, the first result is Besirc: http://bersirc.free2code.net/index.php/home it has a Windows version. Never tried it. If you find a good one that is still be developed would you let me and anyone else that may be interested know? Those of you interested here is a link to some info on IRC: http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/new2irc.html

I am changing this one last time, I noticed that you can do this without installing anything unofficial. Cryptnet.dll doesn't misbehave when keeping all the original files. This simplifies things considerably too. AOL recently changed the in2tv website in order to view shows using the method described above you have to choose it from "Shows" on the menu near the top of the page:

Yahoo! Mail Beta uncompatible with our OS

Slick! For U.S. users: http://f557.mail.yahoo.com/dc/launch?sysreq=ignore I guess you can add it to your favorites or bookmarks. -

Firefox, Seamonkey, and Mozilla users can download the extension User Agent Switcher: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/59/ After installing, go to Options -- Options, add a new agent. In Firefox I used the description Firefox XP and under User agent add the following line: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; nl; rv:1.8) Gecko/20051107 Firefox/1.5.0.7 Leave the rest of the lines blank. Remember you can change the Agent for the current session only. -
I just wiped WMP (including the DRM folder and reinstalled). I am going to modify my directions slightly. I got the DRM upgrade before applying any of the files from 98se2XP or 98seMP10. All I had for WMP was official MS WMP9 and upgrades. Obviously it works for me: In between installing MP7 and MP9 I install Windows Media encoder 7.1, that shouldn't matter should it?

Microsoft has a site to perform individualization: http://services.wmdrm.windowsmedia.com/ind.../en/indivit.asp I would suggest using IE.
-
@mdgx Did you update blackbox.dll to the version included in WMP10? If you did I think that may be the problem, if you notice in my directions I don't update that, at least not until after getting "individualized".

Unofficial Internet Explorer 6 SP1 Updater

I am not extremely versed in inf files but I think "%24%\progra~1\common~1\system" Should be "%24%\%PROGRAMF%\%COMMONF%\system" -
Having a minor issue with AOL's in2tv site: If you follow the directions above and visit AOL's in2tv http://television.aol.com/in2tv, you can watch any of the shows by scrolling down and picking individual shows from the list of all shows. If , however, you choose one of the links near the top of the page, for example LOL TV, or Vintage TV: http://television.aol.com/in2tv/lol_tv http://television.aol.com/in2tv/vintage_tv You will get a message saying you need to upgrade to XP. Can someone tell me how, after changing IE's user agent they are detecting Win98? You can go to one of the above pages and click "Stop" before it loads and the page's source. The only things I can find that try to detect browser and OS version are: http://cdn.channel.aol.com/_media/channels/sniff.js and http://nsvapp-prod-rr.stream.aol.com/fugu-wrapper I am probably missing something else! Any help would be deeply appreciated.

erpdude mentioned k-meleon, a browser I used to keep up with, I would recommend K-ninja. http://www.geocities.com/grenleef/ It's based on k-meleon and should be 100% 9x compatible.

Windows 95/98 First Edition + WMP 9
Steven W replied to galahs's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Thanks for confirming that erpdude8. You probably saved a few 95 users some time and aggravation. I know I tried everything I could think of a few years ago. Also for those 95 users that install WMP 7.1; on the system that I installed it on, it would crash when I clicked "Portable Device" in WMP. I found that if you removed a dll file (I can't recall which one) and deleted a couple of registry entries, it no longer crashed. I am NOT absolutely certain but it may have been PDbrowse.dll, and a couple of associated registry entries.
