Windows 95/98 First Edition + WMP 9
Steven W replied to galahs's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Just to be clear I'm talking about installing WMP9 on win95. The page I linked to walks you through installing WMP 7.1 on 95/NT (and that works well). The reason I linked there is in my failed attempt, several years ago, at getting WMP 9 to install on Win95 I used the setup_wm.zip file from that page. -
Windows 95/98 First Edition + WMP 9

The title of this post suggest that this will work on Win95. I read about a similar hack several years ago: http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com/forum...player-9-a.html (even someone suggests this will work on 95 there) and tried to get this running on Win95 and came close, but couldn't make it work. I modified control.xml, put the entries in the registry for Win98 SE, and got SETUP_WM.ZIP, from this page: http://www.rainbow-software.org/wmp71w95.html If I recall correctly you had to modify something in control.xml to use that version of setup_wm.exe. Also if I recall correctly I could run the setup, go through the whole thing, set file associations, and right when WMP should have started it would give an error message. I remember it is sort of a pain to remove this from your system and to get MP 7.1 working correctly. I hope that I'm wrong and 95 user can use this but, I really don't think so. -
Windows 95/98 First Edition + WMP 9

@mdgx would you consider using part of my advice for the in2tv (and other sites that require MP10) just modify, wmplayer.exe, wmp.dll and wmploc.dll to version 10.00.00.3802 (using XN resource editor)? People will still have to switch IE's user agent to take full advantage of it, but could cut out a few steps for those who want to and I don't see this causing any harm or compatibility issues for those who don't. -
You have to create the folder (Right Click a blank spot and choose New -- Folder). Name it Win98 or whatever you want to call it. Then copy the contents of the win98 CD to that folder.

I am going to try some off-the-wall idea. I installed XP on another partition, installed a some regisrty monitoring program (I can't recall it's name now), started it, installed QT 7.1.3 and got a reg file. I am going to try to use this to get this working with 98 after backing up the registry of course! Question: I see entries in the reg file like, "QTComponentsDir"="C:\\Program Files\\QuickTime\\QTComponents\\" Do I need to change the \\ (double slashes) to \ (single slashes)?

That's cool I have tried toying with what I could find too. The lowest version I have found is 7.0.1. I ran across this: http://www.thomasyung.com:81/MyBlog.nsf/dx...nt&comments Of course it's for a mac. I was hoping somehow QT6 pro on Windows could use the updated codecs. Starting to look like a pipe dream.

Does anyone know where I can get Quicktime player for Windows version 7.0.0 or a even beta. Please don't post links to later versions later than 7.0.0. I am going to try to see if I can get someting working with win98SE. I might possibly be able to use a mac version 7.0.0. I have been googling for a while to no avail. Thanks in advance for looking.

I have recently returned to Win98SE. If you want to use Windows Media Encoder 7.1, make sure you install it and restart before installing WMP 9. This solved all issues that I had.

I just uploaded the zip file I use for my Audigy sound card I hope it's the same one you have. It's 19.75 MB. To use it Unzip and run CTZAPXX.exe it will let you choose VXD or WMD driver should work with 98SE/ME/2K and XP. Don't be surprised if the install takes a few minutes. I often think my PC has locked up but it always works fine. http://www.uploading.com/files/87O2T0ZX/SB_Audigy.zip.html

If the driver suggested above doesn't work let me know. I think I have the same soundcard. I backed up a zipped version of it for myself. Maybe I can upload it somewhere that you can download.

Theora can have the ogg extension too. If my understanding is correct ogg is just a container. Winamp doesn't do theora I couldn't even make it open theora files by forcing it to use directshow (with the Radlight filters). I believe some are looking into using ogg for dirac video. I am going to try ffdshow! Thanks for the replies!

"The problem is that McAfee's new software doesn't support 9x period." You obviously never dealt with McAfee's, I use the following terms loosely, "Customer Service", or "Tech Support".
-
What version of mplayer are you using? I've had trouble with the latest version causing my PC to reboot. I would like to have one player to handle all files with the ogg extension instead of thinking about it!

I have tried several Directshow filters and programs and none seems "right". illuminable Directshow filters - Great for vorbis, but did not playback theora files (the one's I downloaded anyway) Radlight Directshow filters - Plays back all media that I tried, but when playing a vorbis file skips first few seconds of audio. VLC - supports all but again skips a few seconds on vorbis files. Winamp - Does vorbis very well but that's all it supports MPC didn't playback theora files unless using Radlight filters. Any advice?

That's the ticket, I'm looking for XPsp2 info though. Thanks for replying does anyone know what to put in for Xp? And should the go into Windows NT\CurrentVersion

Realistically, how much longer can Win98 be kept viable?
Steven W replied to E-66's topic in Windows 9x/ME
If you're using Firefox might I suggest two things, MediaPlayerConnectivity Extension And set it to use VLC for quicktime files. I recommend version 0.8.4a of VLC It will play *most* quicktime media. Newer version tends to be "sluggish". -
So what to do if and when 98SE is no longer viable?
Steven W replied to emarkay's topic in Windows 9x/ME
I personally think that we have a while to go before 98SE is no longer viable. Heck, there is a small number of Windows 3.1 users left. I was reading a post about this not too long ago discussing hardware. One thought I had was the person who posted overlooked used hardware. There will be thrift stores, yard sales, and computer shops with old hardware around years from now. There are people here, and elsewhere, providing "hacks" (for both harware and software) that their finding to keep us going for now. I would love to see an opensource community committed to providing software for 95/98/ME. In a few years time maybe you'll find a linux distro that you like, Maybe Reactos will get somewhere. Maybe someone will create a win9x clone, that will run on top of a 32-bit version of freedos. I guess my point is that for now, IMHO, it's way to soon to be really worried. -
Thank you. I must admit, figuring out the DRM update was necessary was a just a coincidence. I just happen to be an INXS fan (hence the link to the video in the directions). One more bit of good news mdgx's 98semp10 can be installed after this, upgrading more components.

I am attaching some screenshots to show this in action and to better explain part of the "installation". Here it is in action (watching Pinky and the Brain at AOL's in2TV) Here's what you should see in regedit when done with step 3. Here I am editing (changing version numbers of) wmp.dll using XN Resource Editor (Part of step 6 above)

I recall discussions, a few years ago, somewhere, about using regedit to modify Windows version info that would trick *some* programs into installing. I have tried googling to no avail. I have already switch the info that IE pumps out (user strings). I have a feeling that it this HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion that should be modified, but am uncertain. Does anyone know what I am talking about? If so could you tell me how to do this, or point me to a link? I am using Win98 SE and want to put info in for WinXP sp2. Thanks, SW

Updated 07/12/2007 This is no longer working...Both the IN2TV website and VH1's site have now switched to FLV videos. MDGX you may wish to remove this from: http://www.mdgx.com/98mp10/98mp10.php. I will leave the original post here as it may offer some clues for someone to get sites working that "require" newer versions of WMP or Windows. _____________________________________________________________________________________________ Original post: Hey all I got AOL's In2TV working on a Win98 PC and figured someone else might be interested. I want to emphasize this isn't just for In2tv, I have watched free videos from cinemanow.com. This should work with many sites that require XP and WMP10 for media. I wouldn't be surpised if a few subscriptions services could be made to work. I would strongly reccomend testing them first! Here's all the steps that I took (Please read carefully I won't be responsible for damage): 1. Install WMP 9.0 and reboot. 2. Install windowsmedia9-kb891122-x86-intl.exe, WindowsMedia9-KB917734-Win9x-x86-ENU.exe, and WM9Codecs9x.exe and reboot. 3. Change IE's user agent. Check this page http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/799/ Use MSIE 6.0 and Windows NT 5.1; SV1 (instead of what it says). I exported this from the registry and wrote another .reg file that removes this info so I can switch between 98 and XP at will. If you leave it XP be aware windowsupdate no longer works correctly. 4. Go to this page (requires adobe flash 8 or 9) http://www.vh1.com/artists/az/inxs/videos.jhtml, scroll down and watch the "Pretty Vegas" video, this should ask you to update your DRM components. Answer "OK". 5. Download XN resource editor http://www.wilsonc.demon.co.uk/d10resourceeditor.htm 6. Open XN resource editor and change the version number of these files, wmplayer.exe, wmp.dll, and wmploc.dll to version 10.00.00.3802 you must do this in 4 "places" in the file, use double and single zeros as the original. 7. Click Start -- Run, type "C:\Windows\INF\UNREGMP2 /UpdateWMP" without quotes and press Enter I hope someone with more skills will package this. I really like the idea of a simple IE user agent switcher! SW

Try: http://www.apple.com/trailers/ It doesn't work with the Quicktime Alternative (at least the version for 98/ME) My solutions does. (at least all the times I tried) By the way, I recommend VLC version 0.84a
-
I don't think you all are getting it. Try: http://www.apple.com/trailers/ You have to have the latest quicktime or Alternative, these won't work on Win98/ME But the solution I am reccomending will. sorry forgot link: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=82208

I sort of found a solution for Quicktime on 98. I am sure that most of you know that the latest version of QT will not install on Win98/ME. Check this out https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/446/ and VLC(www.videolan.org), I imagine Mplayer for windows could also work. Thank goodness for these projects. I am curious if other know of media players that could work for quickime?

Okay did some reading and someone had a problem with WME 7.1 too. It wasn't related but I think this may be the solution. Install WME 7.1 before you install WMP 9. I will probably never know because my Hard Drive failed this morning. Luckily there were two in this PC. I'm now running XP and Fedora Core 5.
