  1. You are cutting yourself short for that much money. The P4 2260 would not cost that much more and you would get 533 FSB. Have you thought about just installing a new motherboard, CPU, and DDR-RAM? A bundle with a tower and a 400 plus power supply?
  2. LOL, will do tonight.
  3. Yea, SCSI does cost more, and IDE models are cheaper, but my first burner (Hewlette-Packard first generation) was a toaster maker, so I went with a TEAC 6X SCSI drive, and have had maybe 5 coasters in two years. I like the SCSI because it is on its own channel, so no bus conflicts. In the same box I have 1 hard drive, 1 CD-ROM Drive, 1 Zip Drive using the two IDE channels. The SCSI on its own channel makes a little difference. The Lite ON, FthrJack mentions, is IDE and an excellent burner. There are differences between the European models and the exported models. You have to look close. When this TEAC bites the dust I'll probally get another SCSI, and Lite On looks better everytime I read a review about them. My friends have them and swear by them.
  4. Yes, it wears them out, but minimal. I perfer SCSI CD Burners with their own SCSI cards. The Lite On FthrJack is talking about gets good reviews and supports over burning I think? Both systems look great really. Some of the name brands are not familiar to me, Cicero and Pine, so I could not comment on them. Remember that Linux does not support a wide range of hardware like Windows does. Be sure to see the linux.org web site for a list of compatiable hardware.
  5. No, I am not going to say it, lol
  6. Different operating systems on the same hard drive in a dual boot scenario is a different ball game all together. The hard drives file system format is more important (NTFS vs FAT32) than the type of CPU, but I would lean towards the Pentium in a Linux / Windows XP configuration. Keep in mind that not all hardware is compatible with Linux. I would reference www.linux.org for a list of hardware that is Linux compatible. Would be shame if your new video card was not supported by the version of Linux you decide to use. What flavor of Linux are you thinking about? And this is cool: One PC, Six Hard Drives, 37 OSes! http://www.maximumpc.com/features/feature_...2002-09-24.html Thanks to the Reverend I scalped it from Him
  7. Added: I forgot. Make sure you include all file verification and CRC reparable. Incase it mess up durring the splitting part. Breaking into parts get CRC error a lot and if one file is screw. There goes the whole thing! Good suggestion(s). Thanks
  8. I have been downloading files in .rar format for years. The program WinRAR (similar to WinZip) supports .rar format, by the way. This weekend I am downloading a large program that is broken down to 27 files that are 14,999,999 bytes each (14.649 MB). When decompressed, each file will explode to about 28-29 MB each. Downloading the individual files allows me to download any or all at any time I choose. For example, I can download 1 or 2 in the morning, a few more later on in the day/week, or all at once if I choose. This is cool because if I tried to download all of the files at one time and my connection broke I would want to start all over to ensure I got it all. But when I tell people about this method they think it is not the best way to do it. Some people prefer the constant download. I remind them that slow connections can take forever (days) with the traditional download method they kinda look at me funny? Am I wrong about all this?
  9. The three major differences between the P4 and The Celly are substantial. FSB vs FSB: The P4 2260 and higher have 533 FSB (Front Side Bus). The Celly has 133 FSB. In terms of FSB, buy nothing less that a P4 2260. The 533 FSB was introduced by Intel just this year. The technology has been in the works since 1981! It is reviewed on my site, www.msnwar.com, along with some sweet motherboards, and links to other reviews. Cache vs Cache: The P4 has 512 MB and the Celly has 128 MB. Like zivan56 pointed out. The bigger 512 cache on the P4 is important in terms of performance. You have to look close at store bought PCs. Will the motherboard paired with a P4 support 533 FSB? I have seen some that do not. Be sure to ask before you buy.
  10. A few weeks ago a friend told me that people were attaching malicious programs to vids on Kazaa or morpheous. Not sure which one.
  11. Using Group Policy Objects to Hide Specified Drives in My Computer for Windows 2000 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...=1&PA=1&SD=HSCH I could not find anything directly related to XP.
  12. Right. Just yesterday, I received the message that my logitech mouse batteries are getting low, so I now have Duracell Plus Batteries sitting here on my work station. I used the rechargeables for a while and it seems they only last half the time of the normal batteries. I even have a rechargeable kit for all the batteries we use around the house to save a few bucks. A gameboy eats them up fast. I had a Sigma cordless mouse with the rechargeable base station thingy before I got the logitech. It was a cheap rig.
  13. No, not really. I just make this stuff as I go. To be honest, I have thought about the sound thing in the past, (only when new posts are made - not every post). I don't think it can be done unless it is an interactive program. A developer could probally make a fair amount of money if developed. As an experienced forum leader you yourself would be an excellent source as to "would this concept be a trend"? Hey, something to think about
  14. I setup my PC to make a sound whenever someone makes a new post. The Windows "Ding" Then, when it dings, I run like hell to the PC to see wats up. I moved my laptop to our bedroom. > see where this is going? < During the deed, I hear the ding, jump up and clickity-click I get my rush. After maybe four weekends of this I have lost a few pounds running back and forth. Alas, the wife says it is annoying and frustrating for her to have to wait while I do all this? Any suggestions?

I suggest you do the job. Don't trust him to do it right.

Re-running setup only overwites windows own files. You will not loose any documents etc. You may have to reinstall some programs. Maybe. You should create a New Restore Point after the setup is complete. Just don't make the mistake of reformatting the hard drive.

You don't need to do a system restore because it won't help the boot.ini Once the boot.ini is corrupted your screwed. Yes, you can rebuild the files manually but I don't think you want to do that. You want to get the Operating System setup right, so your friend can get back to using his PC. Remember, you will not be there everytime something needs fixed. You need to rebuild the boot.ini and some other files. Thats a pain in the arse. Re-run setup and let Windows rebuild all the files for you. Screw the restore point at this stage. With a corrupted boot.ini you need to re-run setup. After the setup is complete make a new restore point. edit: Was the PC working okay before all this? Was the PC rebooting itself before he fixed the fan? If it was okay before he mucked around inside I would lean towards a hardware problem. Like check the cables dude.
  19. Why does this post remind me of the song ... Stroke Man - Stroke Man Hey, Aaron is not a hatefull person. I know. I deliberately do things to get his attention out of respect for his knowledge and judgement on all kinds of issues. He never slaps me on the wrist unless I deserve it. And I usually deserve it You make your own place in this world or the world puts you in place GeForce-5

DOS. c:\setup.exe I am sorry rwalker. I did not mean to be rude. But yea, what ThA_FiLeR said. This is XP? Is the CD bootable? Enter the BIOS and set the boot sequence to boot from a CD-ROM, A, C. Boot the PC and hit enter when prompted to boot from a CD. Depends on the machine but thats the general idea. Where the CD is not bootable. Go to bootdisk.com and download a boot disk for XP, Win98, whatever your friend is running. Do the same thing as above minus the BIOS configuration. You can also start windows in normal mode, insert a Windows XP CD and run setup from the CD itself.

    Win 98 comp

Fthr quote: ok next time it locks up open it up and put your hand inside (with the pc turned off like) does it feel warmer than last time? Now thats the MAN! The Touch! I remember the first time I did that to afriends machine and said something like "Its too hot". My friend is a highly paid contractor "Track and Wheel Industry" and said to me something like "I could not have done that." It was heat by the way.

Wait, lets back up, okay. The PC was on. He remove the fan wire from the motherboard with the PC running? Is he daft? Anyone that would do such a thing needs more help then we can give them. I mean they probally remove floppy disks from the drive when the drive light is on? These types need basic PC classes or someone to sit down with them from the initial start-up and walk them through the basics. Believe me, I know some very competent graphics artist with Corel and Adobe, but know nothing about crossing the street when the walk-light is red. Anyway, check the hardware in the PC and make sure everything is secure such as the hard drive cable(s). Did he accidently dislodge the hard drive cable just a bit from either the hard drive itself or the motherboard? Press the connectors and insure a firm fit. Software wise. Run setup again to replace the missing files. Then run Norton Utilities or something and see what else is wrong with other things.
  23. Saturday night and Aaron has a date? Na
  24. Yea it is cool. My son wants one for Christmas. I think this is the one with the battery charger built into the base set. The rechargeable batteries are optional, but come with the unit. Looks like a Killer Whale huh?
  25. Heck, I only got one eye! I be your ears you be my eyes lol
