The default for what? If you mean file associations, you'll have to point them directly to the EXE. I haven't heard of any sort of breakdown/comparison of gain (or whatever) with using the 64bit WMP. What have you heard?

I think MS would be wise to create a workstation version of the next OS for people like us. Some preview articles I have read say there is a hidden start button in the lower left that can get you access to the standard desktop. No I haven't tried it yet. I may tomorrow. Although I do not actually use the Desktop interface anymore in my day-to-day work, I do make use of the taskbar.

I never know about those PSU calculator sites. I've seen situations where the values they provide do not match up with actual configurations. As far as what video card to get, I look at what programs I want to be running and what their minimum requirement is. Then just pick something that is above that (or the recommended) in whatever price range I am willing to pay. That and (for me at least) I will always get one with a fan on it. For PSU, if the video card you are looking at does not list a PSU requirement (some vendors do not publish this info online, such as MSI) then its hard to tell. Oddly enough, that requirement will be on the video card box. Another thing to go on is what the board itself is looking for. Couldn't you use a VM and migrate the root domain to it, then create a child domain and then migrate the objects? You could even use any old computer to house a root domain that does nothing other than just sitting there.

For things like hard disks, I do not believe its name comes from the INF file. I believe that info comes from where WMI comes from aka, the BIOS.

If you want to run IE9 (x64) look for Internet Explorer (64-bit) in the Start Menu. If you want to run WMP (x64) you should make a shortcut to C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe. The standard shortcut in the Start Menu for Windows Media Player launches the 32bit version. Just so you know, there is no problem with running 32bit apps in a 64bit OS. I'd say more than 70% of the apps I run in my 64bit Win 7 are 32bit apps.

I just built a Windows 7 image with a recovery partition for a 40GB drive and it didn't seem to be a great idea, at least with a recovery partition on it.

What SP level is the standard CD at? Are you installing from a CD drive or a USB key?

Its typically a bad idea to hotlink someone else's image. I removed it, fortunately it was just showing a placeholder image and not something disgusting. Anyways, we have a bunch of topics like this already in our Customizing Windows section... where this topic now sits.

If you don't want to use Flash player in your regular browsers, think about installing or using a specific browser (with Flash plugin installed) just for that purpose. I currently use 3 browsers, with Pale Moon as my standard one, and then use IE9 and Chrome for specific purposes. In my example, I use Chrome just for Google related things like Youtube, + or Gmail.

Are you specifying a computer name in the XML?

0x7E isn't related to the mass storage controller driver. Last time I saw that it was due to a conflict between the HDMI audio on a video card and a sound card... or at least their drivers. So far we haven't figured out how to resolve that particular issue. What happens if you use the stock XP disc without all those extra drivers included?
