  1. The only ones that do it for me are in the Macromedia MX 2004 suite. Its annoying because it disables Aero, but other older programs like Leetch and CDex don't use Aero and still don't disable DWM. It would be nice if exceptions could be made. Here are some other findings posted on reboot if you are interested in them: http://reboot.pro/16468/

  3. That all seems to be a lot of work.... Most can be done using unattend. For theme elements, I'll save the .theme file and use ShellExecute on it during first logon commands. Anything that is supposed to be "default" as far as the Desktop icons go, I put them all in the Public Desktop. I suppose it depends on what you need to do.
  4. Only by using a custom shell and playing some tricks, like having the file originally named something ambiguous in the sources folder, then copy it to the Ramdisk and rename it to unattend.xml... then call Setup.exe with the /unattend switch.

  6. I would hardly consider this a valid complaint against Windows 7. Halo was released in 2001 with an OS requirement of Windows 98 SE. I recently purchased a DVD of The Wizard of Oz. The movie was released in 1939 and made to run on projectors of that era. If the motion picture industry can re release their classics in original form for modern tech, why can't the software industry? Yes, but using this comparison is to say that you hate a DVD player because your old film reels won't work on it or vice-versa. I did see that Bungie had released a Vista version of Halo... did you get that?
  7. I'm not sure what you're referring to. I didn't see them talk about 4 ARM versions but then again I just quickly glanced. Just like everyone, they looked at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\PackageIndex\Product. That does actually list 9 unique versions: Edit: one funny comment from slashdot (out of numerous sites where pretty much everybody hates Win8): OK I looked at the article but didn't see where that list was coming from. Regarding the different WOA versions, it came from the initial press release that MS was going to support ARM CPUs, but that each platform is not 100% compatible with each other. This shouldn't even be a real concern in the consumer market as the appropriate versions would only be made available to the device manufacturers, so to the every-day citizen, there would only be one ARM version. From: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2012/02/09/building-windows-for-the-arm-processor-architecture.aspx This page also lists 3 of the manufacturers, nVidia, Texas Instruments and Qualcomm. So its possible that there are only 3 ARM versions being worked on.
  8. Windows 8 CP seems to lack the basic IDE driver when using a UEFI enabled boot on the DVD drive. Well that is virtual-UEFI as whatever 2.2TB Infinity is... emulated UEFI. Either way, the motherboard manufacturer only provides AHCI or RAID drivers (not one for IDE mode), I tried Windows 7 x64 and "Longhorn" x64 drivers and nothing worked. However, using a Windows 7 Ultimate x64 DVD works fine in this configuration without prompting for drivers. has anyone been able to install Win8 on a GPT disk using Setup?
  9. Last year?
  10. I installed Windows 7 Starter on an MSI Wind u100 Netbook with 2GB RAM. I then installed VirtualPC and installed Vista Business x86 inside of there.
  11. I wouldn't say so, you are just not approaching it right. My example of using multiple XML won't work for you, as it does for me. Install your programs (like Acrobat) using FirstLogonCommands. I would just ignore Audit Mode/Pass all together since you probably don't need to use it and you seem to be mixed up about how to use it. You should not run an OS in Audit Mode for more than 30 days.
  12. I think all MS Beta OSes are upgrade locked, aka you can't upgrade them using Windows Setup.
  13. Those silly guys. The reason there are 4 ARM versions is because ARM has 4 CPUs on the market that aren't compatible with each other.
  14. I would hardly consider this a valid complaint against Windows 7. Halo was released in 2001 with an OS requirement of Windows 98 SE.
  15. Sure you can change the transparency. I know in Unattend it is this: <Themes> <ThemeName>aero</ThemeName> <DefaultThemesOff>false</DefaultThemesOff> <WindowColor>Slate</WindowColor> </Themes> The WindowColor object only supports the built in values. I don't think you can put an RGB or HEX value in there. List of colors: WindowColor on TechNet I would presume this could be changed via the registry also.
  16. I saw that wasn't China's flag either. I try to play it safe, I was originally going to greet with a video from "The Prisoner"
  17. Some day I'll learn how to do that myself, but I have yet to determine a use for that technology in my work.
  18. Welcome to the MSFN!
  19. I found a sad face in Windows 8! It looks like this To get it, let the computer go into hibernate. Then unplug the hard drive. Then turn on the PC. After about a minute it will go to a blue screen with a sad face. Unfortunately, it reboots after less than a second so I couldn't get a picture of it.
  20. Do not use the reseal to OOBE in your unattend. When you use the /OOBE switch with sysprep.exe, it does this instead. I have never found a valid use of the reseal in unattend other than to set it to Audit. Why it has other options is beyond me. If you are booting into Audit Mode, you'll want to use an Autounattend.xml that only has your base installation settings in it. That is basically your WindowsPE pass and oobeSystem just to use Audit. Then you make another answer file that has all your other settings for passes and use that with the /unattend switch. Its easier to manage you answer files by using two sets of them, at least for me it is. However, since you want to make a DVD that just installs all by itself, you won't want to put it in Audit Mode at all!
  21. Its the same for WES7 as it is for Win7. Example: <FirstLogonCommands> <SynchronousCommand wcm:action="add"> <Order>1</Order> <Description>Running Registry Change</Description> <CommandLine>cmd /C start /wait c:\folder\registry_change.exe</CommandLine> </SynchronousCommand> </FirstLogonCommands> In my case, I do not put the command in there. You could use a .cmd file in that place if you'd like.
  22. This right here is possibly one of the longest lasting bugs. Its the worst thing when a print job gets stuck for some reason. And then they handily give you options like Restart, Cancel, whatever but they rarely work when the job is stuck. Then you have to go through the process of rebooting the printer and/or computer and hope and pray that the print job goes away! What about the PowerShell prompt? I never use it myself... Thumbs was definately a scourge during XP, but I haven't noticed it too much in 7. As far as Desktop.ini, it is one reason why I don't choose the option to show hidden files, since when you do you get two desktop.ini on the Desktop. I know why they are there but come on... Speaking of which, what if there was a way to show hidden files just in certain folders? Say i want to see everything in the Windows folder or AppData, but I don't need to see everything else unless I want to! That's because you have 3 primary partitions already. Your Win7, Win8 and recovery partition are primary. So that's likely what your limit is. Try using a VHD install instead to a USB key/HDD.
  23. I (personally) would NOT be inclined to use a program that modifies Vista/7 bootloader on an XP/NT/98 system!
