  1. For things like hard disks, I do not believe its name comes from the INF file. I believe that info comes from where WMI comes from aka, the BIOS.
  2. It is probably going to be better to not do a standard install to the USB HDD and instead do a VHD install on it. I haven't tried something like this myself, but I found some leads. http://reboot.pro/15516/ http://reboot.pro/15815/
  3. If you want to run IE9 (x64) look for Internet Explorer (64-bit) in the Start Menu. If you want to run WMP (x64) you should make a shortcut to C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe. The standard shortcut in the Start Menu for Windows Media Player launches the 32bit version. Just so you know, there is no problem with running 32bit apps in a 64bit OS. I'd say more than 70% of the apps I run in my 64bit Win 7 are 32bit apps.
  4. Map a network drive, use that drive letter to do the install, then unmap the drive?
  5. Yikes, how did that happen?
  6. Have you looked into adding a child domain and migrating the objects to that?
  7. For the XP issue, look at the "Known Issues affecting XP package" here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/969084
  8. Well that panel is for legacy color changes. If you do not use the classic view you can ignore it.
  9. Welcome to the MSFN!
  10. I just built a Windows 7 image with a recovery partition for a 40GB drive and it didn't seem to be a great idea, at least with a recovery partition on it.
  11. What SP level is the standard CD at? Are you installing from a CD drive or a USB key?
  12. You may want to post more information (such as some details) about what exactly you are using (hardware) and how you created this network. For others reference: About the Wireless Hosted Network
  13. Its typically a bad idea to hotlink someone else's image. I removed it, fortunately it was just showing a placeholder image and not something disgusting. Anyways, we have a bunch of topics like this already in our Customizing Windows section... where this topic now sits.
  14. If you don't want to use Flash player in your regular browsers, think about installing or using a specific browser (with Flash plugin installed) just for that purpose. I currently use 3 browsers, with Pale Moon as my standard one, and then use IE9 and Chrome for specific purposes. In my example, I use Chrome just for Google related things like Youtube, + or Gmail.
  15. Are you specifying a computer name in the XML?
  16. 0x7E isn't related to the mass storage controller driver. Last time I saw that it was due to a conflict between the HDMI audio on a video card and a sound card... or at least their drivers. So far we haven't figured out how to resolve that particular issue. What happens if you use the stock XP disc without all those extra drivers included?
  17. Check out this pinned topic, maybe it can help
  18. Hope you do well on going for the MCSE. I never went beyond MCP myself.
  19. PartED Magic (not to be confused with the other "PM" Partition Magic) looks to be used by burning it to a CD and then booting off it?
  20. Is your DC configured to permit an unsecured join?
  21. You can disable the creation of that partition. See this: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itproinstall/thread/58666f3c-ff85-4e19-9237-01e945c8fac6 Looking up that error leads me to think there is something wrong in the XML or there was an error in the capture? Look at these and see if anything makes sense for you: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/mdt/thread/663dac6f-badf-49cf-9c21-d4baf8184cb2/ http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/mdt/thread/1a0b6555-e4b2-40de-bfaf-eb8ff7710d60/ It looks like there is a log file somewhere you can read to find what failed.
  22. Quoted for reference: See the original question is that OP wanted to block those ports (21-23) however blocking those ports would only prevent access IF the computer was a Server. As an example, blocking port 21 would prevent OTHER computers from connecting to this computer if an FTP Server was running on it. And why would you install an FTP server with a blocked port 21? Anyways, I presumed this meant that the OP wanted to prevent the computer from connecting to an FTP server, which would require blocking the outbound ports, not port 21.
  23. I don't think IE9 displays properly with Aero disabled, so its not just your theme.
  24. I use 80GB HDD here with Windows 7 but I install my programs in the OS volume for the most part. Right now it says I have 20GB free on the C: and I think my home computer is similar in those numbers.
