  1. OK, I'll answer it for you! following the pattern above, a work-station is where work stops. True in many cases, I know.
  2. Expected size of SP2 still is ~260MB.95-110 MB download size is the stats for XP home/pro, only for automatic updates. The full (network/admin) install will need to be able to apply itself to a retail XP CD. Moreover, the same SP2 package will be used to update MCE/TabletPC too. So it will have to contain files which aren't for your machine alone. Don't expect the SP2 (full/network install) to be smaller than RC2 by much.
  3. Best program to .iso the XPCD ? cdimageGUI for me! UltraISO rocks, but its optimization feature is not immune from acting flakey at times - so I can't trust it if optimizing my OS CD. WinISO su**s. Poor interface. Not properly implemented features (in comparison to today's ultraiso, was good in its day). Not updated since 3 years. What more can I say?
  4. Could you upload this virus to my teachers and employers? They seem to have an anti-virus which keeps them remarkably immune from this one! (we need Will Smith here, I suppose).
  5. 6/10 on the first try! Not bad, but it advises me I'd do well to stay away from a career choice in law-enforcement or IT-recruitment.
  6. Q. What is a bus-station? A. Where a bus stops. Q. What is a Railway-station? A. Where a railway train stops. hmmm...... So, I wonder what a work-station really is?
  7. Well, my 17-incher runs at 1024x768x16-bit @ 85 Hz. That's simply bcos that's a comfortable res and at good refresh. Otherwise, when seriously demanding graphics drop my way, I see them at 1152x864x32-bit @ 75 Hz. Although 1280x1024 is a supported resolution, I don't use it for I end up with the refresh-rate too low (60 Hz). BTW, I seem to have an interesting extra resolution offered, how many more of you have that that capability? I'm able to drive up to : 1400x1050 @ 60 Hz. Not very easy on the eyes, I must say!
  8. Saw a few screenshots of it. But seriously, what do you really expect people to say? It is still cocooned in early stages of development. They haven't even decided what it will be called, yet.
  9. Don't you think the title could be changed just a little? It may not be a "GOD" movie, but it isn't devilish either. No opinion on this, AFAIAC.
  10. Actually, longhorn has drivers for only the more commonly available hardware - and you can't use XP drivers for unsupported hardware with very much success. I've tested longhorn on a GeForce4-MX440, and drivers were already present for it! Also, you would easily be able to run it on Intel's integrated graphics MoBos (i810/i845) - but not the i865G chipset, I hear.
  11. If nothing else works, just delete all shortcuts/links leading to IE (even remove the desktop/quicklaunch/StartMenu icon for IE in XP), and do the below: Make a new shortcut, and in the "target" (or location of item), type "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" -nohome (use whatever your path to %ProgramFiles% is). That is the same as "Start >> Run" and entering "iexplore -nohome". The "-nohome" argument mentioned above does nothing else but load IE without bothering about home-page and all that. So, IE starts quicker as well. You could copy the shortcut you made above, to all the places from where you previously (as in para1) eliminated IE usage (by deleting the access points/shortcuts).
  12. This is called "fishing in troubled waters" (I think). It says I'm not a potential prey!
  13. Do note the "NOT...." (above), and for any cardinal seizures that happen today, you know whom to blame it on. No more pranks please......
  14. #shifty, looking around# Alanoll doesn't seem to be around - I fill-in: Please try the "search" function. This subject has been discussed before.
  15. As what MS said, you were advised to make a backup image, or a "roll-back"able System Restore point. Once you've tried WU v5 (to a deeper extent than just visiting, for example, if you actually applied any updates from v5), you have no other way to get to how things were previously, except to restore from one of the above.
  16. well, the right way to say that would be that SP2 replaces superseded files. So, you see, you're not exactly "uninstalling" old hot-fixes. The new SP will upgrade all your older version files to new!
  17. All of us, compatibility be darned. In any case, we all know what works and doesn't, and how on RC2 - and it won't change from that situation, so.......
  18. No, not playing a prank on you valuable people - but I'm not sitting right next to the "pack-it-up" stall either. But I do know it'd come far earlier to me than most (thru undisclosed channels). That would be considered illegal. Privately/temporarily if you serve it from your own server, that is not such a serious matter. Officially, you can't start distributing it until MS themselves are ready with it, and says "GO !".But, we are an impatient lot, lot more than others ever could be, aren't we? So.....
  19. HOURS or so (prolly minutes, who knows).please make space on your FTPs and keep them ready. It'd be nice if a few people could mirror the build after getting it from the provided link - for a few hours atleast (till the rush within MSFN dies down).
  20. ;Right-click any folder to make ISO of/with boot-sector [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\folder\shell\make_ISO] @="make bo&otable ISO" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\folder\shell\make_ISO\command] @="cdimage.exe -a -b -c -your_other_switches" Just a suggestion. you must have cdimage, and the boot-sector in that folder. Do post back, if you refine this to more sophisticated levels.
  21. Hah, forget the actual download servers, where immense pressure is certain. Even the pressure of these many nerds just talking about release, seems to have ended up in MSFN forum's MySQL servers crashing for 2 hours or so!
  22. Some grudge that we seem to have against them, which dates back to the time when whistler was in development - so it gets "spam"med out by the content filter system.Live msfn webchat via IRC? that'd be cool, but then what happens to the Guinness Book of Records that gabriel_buc spoke of? Build 2181/2179 doesn't exist in stable form anyway - it is most likely 2180 or 2185 which is going to be called RTM-final. Will get back on that in some time. Suggestion taken. Will seed in each of those.Release on 5th wasn't a joke, but its true that the 6th of August is getting closer every minute. But would you use a stable XPSP2 or rather put up with an SP rushed out a day earlier than would'a been ideal? RTW is expected to be soon, folks. Prepare to get used to a clogged Internet for the next 3 days. BTW, this thread is becoming a party - turning from a "feelings about SP2" into a nice place for socialization.
  23. You know, this comment which I read somewhere (about release of SP2) cracked me up like hell - I mean, its the ultimate: LMAO....... ROTFLOL....All the preparation you see going on in the remotest of places (the most significant being SP2 home-page, and Automatic Updates page), of course, tells a totally different story - one that is deciphered easily even by the common man who has no access to insider sources and code.
  24. That's no reason to lose SP2 - they are talking of the date it will be RTW'ed. RTM (and the leak after that ) is imminent as even that article by Paul Thurrott says (he is a very trusted source on MS-related news). SP2 is in its final throes of RTM. It was being intensively tested for any regressions. And is now code-base finalised. In some time, you'll all get to the US English SP2 final update. Shortly after, I'll try digging out the links to german/japanese as well - if there are any more votes which will justify it.
  25. They clearly state (in those links) that it is WU/AU release that will be on Aug25 - and that is known to us already. What matters is when it RTM's - and that is very close to now! Even the RTW has not much relevance, since we all would have leeched the final build off a leaked link even before the news of SP2's release enters the newspapers. Its not a matter of faith. SP2 is pretty close to being released now/today.
