  1. While we're at it dudes, one more related thing: Sometimes, you see that your CD-drive is locked. Pressing the eject button is of no help, nor the "eject" option in explorer. Nor do the third-party CD-ROM tray controllers help. Example: When writing a CD in windows, or after having mounted a CD in linux. Well, how do they do this? Is it a registry flag somewhere? Or whatever... basically if you know how its done, do tell here. Thanx.
  2. Well, what to keep is a thing that I can't confirm, since I don't have the beta drivers. What to delete, is something you can be sure of. And about the INF file - there's no need to edit the nv4_disp.inf - since the driver itself is unaffected. The deletion just eliminates the InstallShield-based installer to save space.
  3. Well, its good that you're something for the gamers here, but if you'd not had this as your only post, it would have been seen in favourable light. But posting this in the "Websites and Boards" section might have been a better thing. In any case, if you had browsed around here a bit, you'd have seen this: That's the official stance here. Only members who've been an active participant in the forum can post their private site.
  4. I haven't seen either of the 2 options you want... There's a feature request facility (accessible from help), try voicing your request there. If there are enough people who insist on something, they might provide it. Heh, the nicest thing about these google people was the experience I describe below: After I registered on Gmail, I sent them a mail thru that feature request/complaints space. Guess what - I got a personal reply from someone in the support department, within 12 hours! Never seen that with ANY other email provider - the other providers have automated response systems that say "we'll forward your email to the appropriate person, thank you for writing to us" - and then nothing after that. But Google proved itself to be different! Anyways, what I complained about was the lack of support for accessing Gmail with Opera. I also am part of an opera forum - we all got together, and each of us had sent a similar complaint email. I discovered that members at opera's official forum too had done that, since they were unhappy. Soon after that (2 weeks), BAM!!!! (They announced that Gmail supported opera!) So, maybe they will listen to you as well? Because responsiveness to the people who use their services has become a distinguishing feature at Google!
  5. XP Pro Corp. is NOT available in retail. Not in "Factory" CDs either. New customers who are getting their Corp. CDs will get it with SP2 integrated, of course. And retail CDs out there (which are therefore direct from MS) on store shelves, do have SP1 integrated - this is for Pro as well as home edition. Very soon, those packages HAVE to be replaced with SP2-integrated ones. The RTM and SP1 versions of the packages won't be sold. And yes, if you (or somebody else, or an OEM) have a CD that has some hotfixes integrated, and any other things (like a multi-boot, or an unattended setup) - then the best thing to do (to prevent problems) is to start from the beginning. Dump the modified CD!
  6. Ha ha ha.... I can guess the answer, SiMoNsAyS! Those games did not run, that's why he went back in the first place! But seriously, no lindows or linspire or whatever can emulate a windows totally. The USP of lindows/linspire is that it is linux+GUI+WINE (WINE=Windows Emulator). WINE is an open-source project to give linux the ability to execute win32 instructions. Now WINE runs most older apps/games fine, that is, those that will run on win98. So you can run office 2000, roadrash, and so on. But apps/games that require things not in the scope of WINE, will certainly not run. For example, Office 2003 (which makes system calls to the IE engine, and is closely tied in to the win2k/XP APIs) and Age of Mythology (a 3D game which uses DirectX) have no hope of ever running even with WINE existing. Of course, you have DirectX compliant builds of WINE (WineX, Codeweaver's WINE, etc.), but those are commercial, and even then, they aren't perfect. Suffice to say that apps/games for linux will run fine on linux, and apps/games built for windows will run fine on windows.
  7. Well, the Un-official ServicePack guy only has an update to be run post-install. Whereas, I suppose you're looking for something which will truly slip-stream (i.e., replace the old files with the new). Win9x series is simply too frail for that.... Anyway, maybe there still is hope - the installer gives me the impression that there is a remote possibility of using the "/Q:A /R:N" switch for silent install. But I doubt it will be enough, considering that there's that agreement that comes up when your run it...
  8. I'm not exactly able to understand what you have written, but still, maybe the info you were looking for is below: No matter whether SP2 was slip-streamed manually or "Factory" (as you say), the final product is the same. How to identify if the CD has SP2 integrated? You'll find a file in the CD-root folder called "setupxp.htm" on XP+SP2 CDs. You can conclude that the XP CD was manually slip-streamed with SP1/SP2, if the "DOTNETFX" folder is not present in the CD-root (it will be present in the CMPNENTS folder, but that's not what we're looking for). On the other hand, if that folder does exist in the root of the CD, you can infer that the CD is "Factory" (either OEM or Retail-from-Microsoft). You can know that SP1 was slip-streamed into the CD at some point of time, if any file with a "*.SP1" extension is present in the root of the CD. If SP2 was slip-streamed on top of this CD, the only negative is that the resulting space occupied by the files is more (RTM+SP1 junk+SP2). Starting out with an RTM (no ServicePack) CD, integrating SP1 onto it, and then integrating SP2 as well, results in a perfectly fine CD, no problems. The real issue you might be referring to in the second half of your post, might be that OEM (Factory) CDs which come with SP1 already slip-streamed seem to have problems when you want to integrate SP2 into them, or when you try unattending them. This is because some OEMs customize their WinXP CDs, to modify a few things for themselves. In such cases, you do see problems. The only solution then is to start with a normal CD, and put aside the OEM-provided disc. Now...... what special tips can be given here? Well, just having a look around in the forums should help - AFAIK, this entire site is littered with tips. Hoping this helps...
  9. Its been about a month since I slip-streamed SP2 into my WinXP, and made a multi-boot of the CD. Through all the constant changing of the install, and adding/removing things in it, I haven't found any difference in how a multi-boot with/without SP2 works. Everything works the same way WITH SP2 files, as it used to with SP1. Possibly user error? You might want to read the stickied thread in this Multi-boot section. Following the multi-boot maker guide, you will have a properly done disc. Do post back on any problems you encounter, help is always here.
  10. I use the US English driver, WHQL - Forceware 61.76. I install those drivers through unattended (OEMPnpDrvrsPath=) - same as what you are doing, I think. I delete these files, and save 2.48 MB. I don't know if anymore files can be deleted, but I do know that these are safe to delete: data1.cab data1.hdr data2.cab ikernel.ex_ layout.bin setup.bmp Setup.exe Setup.ini setup.inx setup.iss Setup16.bmp The nVidia graphics control panel is available this way. No functionality is lost.
  11. Auto-It is a scripting tool, which will compile into an EXE and send automated key-presses to whatever window-handle you want. Turns out to be VERY useful for installers that don't have the necessary switches for unattending. To put it simply, think of it as a merger of VBscripts and batch-files (not very accurate description, I know - but close). Auto-It home-page
  12. Search the entire CD if there's any folder anywhere spelt "VirusDefs" or something like that. Or, make an ISO-image of the CD (using UltraISO or something), and extract the boot-sector. Rename the extracted boot-sector to have a .img extension, and this file will normally be approx. 2 MB. Open this (floppy-bootable-image) in WinImage, and look for a VirusDefs folder, or a .CAB compressed file - in both cases, the definitions will be in a few files with .DAT extension. Hoping this helps....
  13. Yes, the magical jelly-bean key-finder is the one to use to look up what key you used while installing. But if you don't already have it installed, and are yet to install from the CD, there's no way other than to look up the cert. of authenticity, in your XP package.
  14. @SovereignScorn Welcome to MSFN forums. You'll enjoy your stay here - just follow the rules as you already are. No, I don't think its allowed. Neither links, nor posts telling where to find 'em. We'd prefer to be a community on the right side of the law.
  15. @md10 Here's a thread which has what you want - custom autorun menu. Nevertheless, the APMS 4 autorun by harunaksoy looks beautiful.
  16. If that mouse is not powered from the USB port, and instead uses its own battery - it might glow.
  17. Oh that's good. Wishing you a great time here! Welcome to MSFN forums.
  18. either that, or you're looking for this: makecab /D CompressionType=LZX /D CompressionMemory=21This is for individual files, I suppose.
  19. If so, no one has said it loud enough for me to hear it. Nah man - nothing special here, just a compressed archive. This archive contains updates/Security-Center-fix - files that you'd otherwise need to use live-update to download. But I thought its a good thing to not have to use the LiveUpdate everytime you re-install it ('coz then you need to be connected to the internet, for LU to work). Also, live-update won't work for pirated versions of NAV/SAV. The offer is still open - details in previous post above.
  20. Hmm.... Launched a few minutes ago - then that means that the forums are yet to get clogged-up, and we have plenty o' people here who'd happily post away, LOL. On a more serious note, my eye being so lame, this is what it noticed first: A customized IPB 2.0 PF4 forum, YAY!!!! Looks... tasty.... gotta... get... to it... OK, dude - done with my rambling - all the best to finding members.
  21. Nops!100 would be enough for me. But the 1000 of the inbox, if it also shares with the archived mails/trash.... j/k j/k I mean, 1000 is not for inbox alone, come on! Its for the entire account, all folders.
  22. There must be a VirusDefs directory on CD, or the boot-sector is a floppy-image (.img) that contains the virdefs as a CAB file. Tell us how you did it!
  23. Hey ya others: don't attack the person, attach what's off-balance in a person. That keeps us all happy too! If you do need to let-off steam, say so and lets have a flaming section - but keep the rest of the forum friendly. (just kidding, flaming is not an MSFNer's hallmark at all, so no need for a section just to flame) @fatalwoomera True, we are friendly with all here, and we're here to solve what you described as well. You need to give more details. But remember one thing - do not post in capital-alphabets, that's interpreted to mean shouting, and then the guys will have a problem with you. Just post in the simple way you use when you normally write - with proper capitalizations, and punctuations and grammar and all....
  24. Sure! Hoping you enjoy your time at MSFN forums. Welcome here, M4M!
  25. Yes, as suggested above, use the brief-case, and set it to auto-synchronize every few <so-many-minutes/hours/days>.
