how would I go about putting a dell oem xp disc on my ris server while preserving preactivation and using the appropriate cd key and such.

I love the royale theme, but If I were stuck with luna i'd be using the silver theme...would anyone be up to modifying the royale theme to add silver royale?

1 domain controller, so no replication is taking place, i had the full unc path in there but i'll try just the file name. EDIT: That worked, thanks a lot for all your help and replies!

i changed the unc path to IP, still nothing, checked the perms and yea...nothing. thanks for the suggestions tho.

Alright so i have a basic mapped network drive batch file that works. example: net use z: \\server\share /persistent:no and the batch file works, i've tested it and it works how i want it to, it's specified in ADUC, but it doesn't run when i login. i've done gpupdate /force, and everyone has read perms, but nothing's working. i've rebooted and nothing's working.

Alright I think i got it to work, thanks. Now how to go about generating a new SID from within PE for the actual client without screwing the image.

scratch that, I now have the images there, but i need network connectivity in winpe, thats how i do imaging and I don't really wanna change that now.( i get a winbom error in ERD)

thanks a lot of the reply, but When i go under the maint and troubleshooting menu i get the unable to display os choices, i followed your directions to a T, and this is a server 2003 ris box.

Whenever I use a PE or boot ERD Commander from RIS to do system maintenance stuff, when I reboot the computer won't login to the domain, I don't change anything in there and it's like the ristndrd.sif file is screwing it. I deleted the lines that tell it to join the domain. The os's will load fine but when I reboot i get the "Windows cannot connect to the domain either because the dc is down or otherwise unavailable(which isn't true) or because your computer account was not found. Please try again later. If this message continues to appear, contact your sys admin for assistance" Computer account is still enabled in ADUC but obviously i'm still having problems, i tried an SID changer but didn't help. thanks for any help and replies ristndrd.sif.bak.txt

So i was getting ready to reinstall 2003 on my server and I decided to just download my music and software to various other computer hard drives, all is well until I start to reinstall 2003, my hard drive partitioning crap wasn't working like I wanted it to so I switched my os drive with one of those various other computer hard drives and didn't realize it but i wiped the drive with all my software on it and I was so angry. I lost 10 gigs of software in 2 seconds including all the software I needed for the server, office, service packs and hotfixes, client software...argh and i have most of what i need back so as i need the rest i'll keep searching for and downloading it.

Might wanna run some hard drive tests, almost seems like the hard drive could be failing, were there any other symptoms? slap the drive in another system and backup all the photos and then play around with some drive tools

So I have a batch file that runs at t-12 during GUI mode in windows XP setup, the batch file runs silent installations of various programs on a server share, There are programs that I only want installed on certain workstations and not others, is there an if/then command I can put in there that does this... If this computer's name is "mmdc" then install \\server\share\install.exe /silent, if computer's name is not mmdc then do not install this. the part i'm really stuck on is having it figure out the computer's name and determining whether it should or shouldn't install that. thanks in advance.

start, run, type mmc and hit enter file, add/remove snapin click add group policy object editor browse create new gpo or select one you already have click ok click finish click close click ok edit GPO in AD U and C right click domain or OU you want to assign the GPO to properties select group policy tab click add browse to GPO click ok click apply and ok wait for GPO update or run the "gpupdate /force" command

which is why you do lots and lots of tesing before you put things in to production. i rarely ever use nlite to integrate things other than sp's and hotfixes, i rarely even use the unnattend portion or many of the tweaks lessening my risk of problem. I don't use this in business yet, but am anxiously waiting for the go ahead

I can see where both sides have a good arguement, but in the IT world, time is money, as with everything else as well. We don't want to spend days, weeks, months customizing our xp builds we want it done NOW so we can move on to bigger and better things in the workplace, we dont have time to do it all ourselves, nlite is an incredibly useful tool and i don't see why it can't/shouldn't be used. I don't like using windows update as it takes forever and when doing updates it hogs bandwidth for other users. if it were my decision, i'd say let it go for business, it'd help us/them a lot.

Not sure what to charge for people in general when I do computer work for them. Such as installing a hardware firewall(smoothwall...ipcop...) formating and installing an os general virus/spyware issues what do people in your area charge for various services or what do you think would be a good price for these?

between twice a month and once every 3 months, depends on how many new stable releases of programs i use have an update or when I find enough tweaks to redo it. otherwise I just reimage a few times a month, I like a very clean system.
