  1. Vista home Basic WILL NOT join a domain.
  2. Windows Server 2003 SP2, running AD, DHCP, DNS, RIS and WSUS 3. Only Windows XP is being downloaded currently. I have approved all other available updates, which are downloaded. Only the english language is being downloaded. But why won't these..see attachment. I have waited several days and have retried the download..nothing like that works though.
  3. I'm assuming this means that your password just expired. Try disabling password expiration.
  4. So I'm pretty much stuck with post install SP3 update? that pretty much sux
  5. What does vista actually do to detect whether or not a computer is connected to the internet (When you get a globe on the connection icon in the notification area) Does it just detect whether there is a gateway connected and online? Does it ping an IP? does it do an nslookup of an external domain? What exactly is going on here?
  6. One of the first things I do to a newly installed system is set the mouse tracking speed to full. At the login screen it's still default speed. Is there any way for this to take effect during the login screen as well?
  7. So with the newest version of nLite I slipstreamed SP2 into a gold copy..worked fine. Then integrated SP3, it won't let me install without serial and it won't accept the serial i've always used.
  8. Can I integrate SP3 without integrating other SP's first? If I run the SP3 install from within a gold copy (SP0) that is already installed (Install XP Pro gold(sp0) and then run sp3 install in windows) it says that I must have SP1a or above before I can install SP3 Thanks Nuhi!
  9. So Christmas vacation I plan to rebuild my server with a new drive configuration. I will have an AMD 4000+ 64 bit proc at 2.4 GHz with 4 GB of ram in this box. I will have a 40 GB IDE drive (primarily for storage and boot) I have a 20 GB ID drive available to my disposal (I'm thinking about using this for swap, that's where my question is) I will have 3x 500 GB SATA Drives in a Software RAID 5 Array I will be using CentOS x64 version 5 for my host OS with VMware Server on top of it My question is what would my recommended partitioning scheme be? My initial thought was to put "/boot" on a 100 meg part on the 40 gig, a 6 GB swap partition on the 40 gig, and the rest of "/" on the 40 gig with "/home/vms" on the 1 TB RAID 5 for my VM's. and not use the 20 GB. Then I thought maybe since I have a 20 gig laying around I should do "/boot" on a 100 meg part on the 20 gig, along with the 6 GB swap part ont he 20 gig. Install the rest of the system to / on the 40 gig and /home/vms on the raid 5. I'm still unsure on what I should do for the partitioning scheme. Any suggestions? thanks.
  10. you need to use the imagex.exe that comes in the WAIK
  11. if SP2 is installed this will be labeled as Windows Deployment Services and to use RIS you need to use legacy mode.
  12. Theres several windows xp checklists for recommended tweaks and addons-plugins...system maintenance that should be done for every xp install for creating an image...is there one for vista? I'd rather not go to 500 websites to get their tweaks and tips, i'd rather have all of the best and most common on one pdf/word doc/web PAGE(not site) thanks
  13. OK thank you for the reply...is this a best practice for exchange deployments?
  14. I already google searched that it's not really possible for a box to join 2 domains...but at school the log onto box has local box, EXCHANGE, and (schoolname) for the domain to logon to...obviously im assuming exchange has something to do with exchange..what is it tho? to log onto the computers we logonto (schoolname) and students dont use outlook or exchange for email..but can someone explain to me what this is?
  15. Is there a way I can add a user to a special group in active directory and deny and type of internet access to that user?
  16. but after you install SP2, ris is not available anymore.?
  17. but if SP2 is on the install disk.... which is why i need SP2 separate...for now anyway.
  18. thanks. Yes I would probably get the server from HP as far as it looks right now. Is there any way I can still use legacy RIS or Mixed mode WDS after SP2 is installed if I haven't installed either yet? Whenever I install WDS after SP2 is installed, or slipstreamed, it automatically goes to native mode and I dont think I can change it. Thanks.
  19. So I'm looking at trying to get a client of mine to buy an internal file server for their small business...right now they have 1 computer and will be buying 3 more for now and possible more later. Could someone explain to me the open licensing, and the microsoft select licensing and what's going to work for me...There will be one server for now, serving the 4 computers. It will run Active Directory, obviously DNS, DHCP, probably RIS/WDS, and File/Print sharing for the rest of the network, not just SYSVOL..etc... I may try to convince them to go up to 20 CALs instead of just 5...may wait tho.. Also would you guys suggest 2003 Std R2? or Ent. R2? and if the package includes windows server 2003 SP2 on CD will they come as 2 separate discs(which is what I want)? Or does anyone know where I can purchase the full lic and media either with SP2 on a separate disc or not at all? Thanks for your help.
  20. I'm going to guess it's going to screw something up...Microsoft has a domain renaming tool...i would suggest checking that out.
