I see you're all running Opera 12.50. Unfortunately I'm running Opera 12.02, which is the last version which will run on Windows 98SE, even with KernelEx. I'm now wondering if that's why I'm not getting as good results. I cannot import DER certificates into Opera at all, even by drag and drop, it just says there's no key and won't accept the file. "PKCS#12 format with private key" is the only option which works.

You were right (of course!) I did have to replace sunmscapi.dll with the older version! Although Burp initially appeared to run OK with the new version, it crashed when trying to load the main interface. Now it's fine. I set up the proxy on Burp, generated and installed the PortSwigger (great name!) certificate on Opera 12, and then ran into the problem that nothing would actually connect. After a lot of head scratching, that was finally fixed by disabling all the "Intercept" functions on Burp! Every site I go to now on Opera 12 I seem to have to manually dismiss a huge list of certificate errors. It does seem to work OK once I've done that, although it doesn't help with the poor rendering of many sites of course! I did see that Burp had an option to spoof the User Agent string, but was a bit surprised to find that the Internet Explorer spoof seems to be IE6 on Windows XP! Just a bit out of date I would have thought. The other options seem to be just for Android or iOS. Anyway, the site I really wanted to get to work is the site where I've always manually download pattern files for my old Trend AV on Windows 98. https://downloadcenter.trendmicro.com/index.php?clk=tab_pattern&clkval=33®s=nabu It recently started to refuse to connect with Opera 12, which I mainly why I started taking an interest in this. The page now loads, but the download links still don't work, saying it can't make a secure connection. Could you see if they do the same thing with your Burp/Opera 12 setup?

Does the ncrypt.dll dependency matter on Windows 98? I thought that was just an XP problem. It does seem to be working OK without any files changed, and just the Windows 2000 SP4 KernelEx mode on java.exe. Now I've got to work out how to use Burp! It may well be that errors will appear when I actually try to set it up.

OK, it works, I can run Burp with Azul OpenJDK 8 Update 262 8.48.0.51! I am getting a warning from Burp that it might not work properly because I'm using Azul's Java implementation. Is that what I need that file from Java 8 Update 41 to fix?
-
Ah, I think I get it now! Installing Java 8 Update 41 was just a test to see if the later version would work, and to provide a needed file! OK, I will try installing the Azul version of Java 8 Update 262 and report back!
-
So why did I need to install Java 8 Update 41? Sorry!
-
Sorry, I don't see the significance of "Azul". It appears to be a Java platform of some sort, but what specific Azul software would I actually need to download and use? They seem to offer several different things. Won't Burp work with Opera 12 as it is, why is Azul needed and what does it actually do?

Problem solved, just the act of replacing psapi.dll with the newer version has solved the problem! Burp 2.1.04 now runs fine! So, where to from here?
-
I already had psapi.dll in the KernelEx folder, although the one in the thread you mentioned is newer, so I've replaced it. How do I use it though? Brilliant though KernelEx is, its lack of usage and configuration documentation is a real problem for people like me!
-
OK, I finally found Import Patcher! It was here on MSFN all the time of course! No problems reported by java.exe, but this was the output on jvm.dll - [Patches needed] jvm.dll=DLLs, Functions [PSAPI.DLL] GetModuleInformation= [DLL replacements] MSVCR100.dll=
-
Sorry, I'm afraid you'll have to talk me through using Import Patcher too! I searched for it and was highly confused by the results!
-
I've tried different KernelEx settings, but I'm still getting an error loading jvm.dll.. Java.exe is set to "Windows 2000 SP4" mode in KernelEx, is that right? There are a couple of other Windows 2000 variants, but none of them seem to work either. Is java.exe the only file that needs KernelEx applied?
-
2.1.04 it is then! I'll see if I can get Java 8 running and report back. Thanks, Dave.
-
OK thanks, I will investigate the Java 8 problem before I go any further. I assume Burp 1.7.36 on Java 7 is no good for this purpose?
-
So presumably you have an older version of Burp which does run on a 32 bit system? I have jumper's KernelEx version 4.5.2016 installed. It works fine with everything else I've used it with.
-
Aren't you using Burp on Windows ME? I tried again with a different jar file, which runs fine in Java 6 update 39, which I normally use on 98SE, and got the same result just using the "run" dialogue. Using a command prompt, I got "Error loading JAVA-SE-8U41-RI\jre\bin\client\jvm.dll". Applying KernelEx Windows 2000 mode to jvm.dll made no difference.
-
Thanks, I tried that running the burpsuite_community_v2020.7.jar file which I'd already downloaded. All that happened was that a DOS box popped up for an instant and then closed. It appeared to be blank.
-
I'd appreciate being talked through exactly how to do this!
-
Ah, that's jogged my memory, IIRC now "fast write" is only an AGP thing, so not relevant here.
-
Understood. Yes, you could well be right about integrated graphics hardware being the issue. That could well explain why a driver that apparently supports the hardware and the operating system, and appears to install normally, then doesn't work. What can be done about this I have no idea! I did find a reference to the 0x000000EA BSOD in another forum, which although it related to a different card, suggested that turning "fast write" off might fix it. Apparently on later drivers it's on by default, and can cause problems with some hardware configurations. How you would try turning this off without the control panel I don't know, I can't find any reference to it in the registry. Congratulations on your 20,000th post BTW!

Thanks, I will once again be monitoring that thread! -

I'd be interested to know how to do this if it's possible with Opera 12 on Windows 98SE! Sites are starting to fail now as they can't establish a secure connection. I've looked at Burp, and I assume it's sort or equivalent to Prox HTTPS Proxy MII, but presumably it runs on ME (and hopefully 98SE)? Off-topic for this thread of course...... -
OK, I gave it a try, with not quite the expected results. I tried first using the files in folder B166713, which appeared to be newer than those in B166496. That just produced the BSOD when rebooted. I didn't try to change any settings. I then uninstalled with Device Manager in Safe Mode, and tried again with the files in B166496. That apparently installed OK, overwriting all the newer existing files, but on reboot did not BSOD. However in Device Manager, the device shows the ever-popular "Cannot start (code 10)".
-
That is certainly bizarre! How about trying a Device Manager install using Forced3001, but with the INF from ATI3005? I'm sure it will produce the same result, but you never know!
