  1. Today I found that all the help links in the Windows 8.1 Event Log entries (which have never worked, usually just going to "page not found") are also now just going to the Microsoft homepage.
  2. @glnz All the files should run and install exactly as they are. It was only the very early versions of .NET that needed modified installers. I wouldn't worry too much about abandoning XP just yet, even after we stop getting the POSReady updates you should be pretty safe as long as you have another layer of protection from a fully updated anti-malware program. Strange you should mention seeing that terminal in a hardware store, only today I saw one of the self service tills in my local supermarket doing a disk check, and that said it was XP too. Those tills are quite new NCR units, that were installed way after XP EOS! Of course they could be running POSReady, which may still look like XP on its on-screen dialogues.
  3. Yes, I've ranted futilely before about the Windows 8/8.1 Event Log "more information" links almost never producing anything meaningful! It seems MS put the links in the system, but never bothered to implement the database that they should have used, which I thought was pretty bad! Does Windows 10 actually have the links in its Event Log entries? The XP ones have stopped working properly before, which I have queried both here and on Technet, you may have seen some posts from me there! They did come back to life though until now, whether the present problem is permanent or temporary remains to be seen. I do agree with you that they are of very limited use in many cases even when they do work! I have used eventid.net and it's very useful, but IIRC you have to be a paying member to get some of the more detailed information.
  4. Almost all of the help links in my XP Event Log entries now seem to be going just to the Microsoft homepage. Can anyone else confirm this? Have MS finally withdrawn the online help facility for XP with its list of what the Windows log entries mean?
  5. It's still working fine for me, although I had that dog put down years ago! Do you have Windows (Desktop) Search 4.0 installed?
  6. @jumper Are you going to release KernelEx 4.5.2015.12 now?
  7. Hi jaclaz. Sorry I haven't responded to your last PM, I've been locked out of the whole of MSFN since the site "upgrade".

It seems to be geoblocked in Europe, which I assume is a fault they're not aware of as it's been like it now for several days!

I've managed to get to it finally by spoofing that I'm in the States, but it's crawlingly slow via the virtual VPN, and keeps losing connection if I do anything like trying to look at the forum personal messages.

I have managed to message the site owners, so I hope it's fixed soon. I'll be in touch again then.

    Cheers, Dave.

I remembered after I posted that you're in Italy. The block can't be for all of Europe, as you're obviously not blocked! The guy in Sweden has just messaged me as well to say that he's now found that others he knows in Sweden can access the site, but like me, he can't, so as you say it sounds as if particular IP addresses are being blocked for some reason, rather than areas.

I tried to use the private messaging system, but the site just kept losing connection every time, which is why I sent a message here. I've never used this "status" thing myself, but I saw your name on an entry on the right of the forum homepage, clicked on it, and it brought me here!

Anyway, I hope the site owners get back to me soon as to why myself and others seem to be now blocked from the site.

      Cheers, Dave.

Unrelated, and hoping that your current issue will soon be solved, *somehow* during the board update the "country" flags of many members seemingly were shifted/mixed/whatever, I found myself with the Denmark flag on my profile, and right now you have an USA one, I guess you'd better reset it to the Union Jack, unless you are trying to be coherent with your spoofing ...

      Cheers,

  8. That's because a normal XP install isn't Embedded Windows! Artificially adding that key up until very recently fooled Windows Update into thinking that it is a version of the OS that's still supported, so it still offered updates, which it wouldn't now on a normal XP installation. Updates for Windows Embedded have stopped now as well as those for normal XP, so that key now has to be removed for updates to still work. Other keys like POSReady mimic other versions of Windows that are still supported.
  9. Is there actually a full version of 4.5.2015.12 yet? I'm still using 4.5.2015.11 with one version 12 file substitution to temporarily workaround the Windows startup problem.
  10. You should be able to buy it (it's not free) here, although the site doesn't appear to be working at the moment. Rudolph is a member of MSFN, user name rloew, so you could just send him a personal message here about it if you're interested.
  11. Thanks, I'll probably give it a try in that case!
  12. Interesting that XP actually stood for "experience", I always thought it stood for "extra performance"! I'm sure that's what many people said when it came out in 2001.
  13. Does that script actually stop the optimisation happening altogether, or does it just fix the "bug"? As I said, it's never really worried me, once the computer has restarted after the update it only needs to be on for a short while for the program to do its job in the background, and once it's completed it never runs again until there's another update. On which subject, there doesn't seem to have been any relevant .NET updates for us for a while, or have I missed some? The last ones I installed were at the end of last year.
  14. I take it you don't have .NET 4 installed. When that is installed .NET Runtime Optimization Service v.2.050727.x86 is disabled, and it's replaced by .NET Framework NGEN v4.0.30319_X86, which is on Automatic start, and will run to optimise the system after .NET updates. It does slow the system down a bit while it's doing its thing, but once it's completed it will not run again until the next update, even though it's set to Automatic start. I just let it complete, it doesn't take all that long, and then you can forget about it again! I don't know how beneficial its optimisation routine is, but it's presumably there for a reason.
  15. I use that SanDisk utility on Windows 8.1, which won't natively TRIM FAT32 drives. Unfortunately it won't work on Windows XP. I can also TRIM my FAT32 SSDs using Rudolph Loew's DOS TRIM program (yes, really!)
  16. Well I don't actually use OE on a day-to-day basis, I have always used Eudora as my e-mail client. I do use OE as an archive database for my very old e-mails however, having imported them from Eudora and then deleted the original mailboxes. OE certainly still seems to be working fine for me after the update, and reads the old mailboxes fine. I can't test sending and receiving as I just don't use it for that. The updated files from their names seem to be mainly to do with the address book, rather than the actual e-mail messages themselves.
  17. It was KB3140709 which updated the Outlook Express files if you're interested.
  18. WABIMP.DLL, WABFIND.DLL. and WABMIG.EXE in the Outlook Express folder were updated. They are now version 6.0.2900.7019. SECLOGON.DLL and OLEPRO32.DLL in the System32 folder seem to probably be related as well, judging my their original dates. They are now version 5.1.2600.7020. Those files were all from April 14th 2008, and are now stamped 11th February 2016, except for SECLOGON.DLL which is stamped 17th February 2016. One thing I forgot to mention earlier was that on my netbook, but not my main machine, I was asked to OK a license agreement for the Malicious Software Removal Tool, which I don't remember happening before. I recently restored the whole machine from a Windows 8.1 ISO backup (it's dual boot), which may have been the reason for that. This also destroyed all my update history, on 8.1 and XP, rather annoyingly!
  19. Ten updates installed here, apparently all OK. The yellow shield never appeared on my main machine until I removed the registry key, and then after a reboot, it did appear, showing all the updates. My netbook, which did show the yellow shield before the key was removed, is still only showing two updates when the shield is clicked, despite having the key removed. MS Update is showing them all though. I guess the shield menu just takes a while to update. Quite a lot of files updated this time, including a batch of Outlook Express related files that were last updated in 2008!
  20. OK, I'll give it a try. Strange though that I am seeing two security updates in MS Update, but I'm still not getting the yellow system tray icon from Automatic Updates. I've check my WindowsUpdate.log and there is no error line like that quoted in post #762. EDIT: I just checked my other computer, and that is showing the yellow shield, but only offering the two updates. MS Update was the same, so I removed the registry key and scanned again, and all the other updates appeared. Still no shield on my main machine though, but I will remove the key when it finishes what it's doing!
  21. I don't have SP4 installed, but I do have that registry key. I'm still only seeing two updates on MS Update. Should i remove the key?
  22. I just did a manual check on Microsoft Update, and all that was offered was the March 2016 Malicious Software Removal Tool, and one update for the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack.
  23. Actually, I've now had another thought about this. I also use ERUNT to back up my Windows 8.1 registry on the first boot of every day, and that is using an NTFS drive of course. I couldn't get it to work no matter what I tried using a startup folder shortcut, as I had always used in XP, and eventually I had to set it up to run from a Windows Scheduled Task, set with highest privileges. You may well need to do the same even with XP if it's on an NTFS drive.
  24. Yes, that's probably it. I'm using FAT32 drives, so permissions are not an issue.
