    I take it that you have an ATI or AMD graphics card, as MOM is part of the ATI/AMD Catalyst Control Center, which is built on .NET 2.0 IIRC. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the Control Center and hopefully you'll lose the error message. MOM.exe should be in the C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\Core-Static folder. That's what I have, later installs probably substitute AMD for ATI of course. What happens if you do try to uninstall SP4, you said it was now listed in the installed programs list?

    Check here for the catalog files error message. This was referenced in the first post of this thread.

    That looks as if the SP didn't fully install, although it did do the registry tweaks to continue getting updates, assuming you hadn't done that yourself. What happens if you run the installer again?

    If it's downloading POSReady updates, you must have the necessary registry modification, which would have been done by the SP4 installer. You should be able to check that the SP is installed by looking at the system properties, which should I assume now appear like the screenshot in the first post of this thread. It looks as if it still says Service Pack 3, but the date changes to 2014.

    All the offered updates installed fine here on both my XP machines. The yellow shield does often come back after subsequent restarts in my experience, showing some but not all updates as still needing to be installed. This month it's the IE8 update KB3148198 and one of the Office 2007 Suite updates KB3114542. This often seems to happen, but if I just hold my nerve the shield always eventually stops appearing after a couple of days!

    Thanks Den, I could have found that myself of course if I wasn't so lazy! I assume a Windows 10 based version will appear eventually. Back on topic, my yellow shield has appeared this morning, so it looks as if it's all working fine still with no further registry modifications needed. Rather amazed that the KB3135993 .NET 4.0 update is one of those offered, it's been a very long time since a .NET update was actually offered to me through Windows Update and didn't have to be installed manually!

    I doubt there will be a mass outpouring of grief! Just as an off-topic aside, out of interest, what is Microsoft's current offering for new systems that would have used WEPOS/POSReady? Is there some sort of Windows 10 based offering to replace them?

    The last hurrah for .NET 4.0 I guess. I've now manually checked Microsoft Update, and the new updates are being offered to me now, so I guess the presence of the WEPOS key doesn't matter. Still no yellow shield in the system tray, I'll see if it appears tomorrow.

    OK, I'll see if I'm offered any updates tomorrow (I don't usually see them until the Wednesday morning here in England) and if they're not coming through I'll see if I can delete the key using Windows 8.1 as I have a multi-boot system.

    Should the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\WPA\WEPOS key be removed now, or does it not matter if the "Installed" DWORD within it is set to 0?

    Today I found that all the help links in the Windows 8.1 Event Log entries (which have never worked, usually just going to "page not found") are also now just going to the Microsoft homepage.

    @glnz All the files should run and install exactly as they are. It was only the very early versions of .NET that needed modified installers. I wouldn't worry too much about abandoning XP just yet, even after we stop getting the POSReady updates you should be pretty safe as long as you have another layer of protection from a fully updated anti-malware program. Strange you should mention seeing that terminal in a hardware store, only today I saw one of the self service tills in my local supermarket doing a disk check, and that said it was XP too. Those tills are quite new NCR units, that were installed way after XP EOS! Of course they could be running POSReady, which may still look like XP on its on-screen dialogues.

    Yes, I've ranted futilely before about the Windows 8/8.1 Event Log "more information" links almost never producing anything meaningful! It seems MS put the links in the system, but never bothered to implement the database that they should have used, which I thought was pretty bad! Does Windows 10 actually have the links in its Event Log entries? The XP ones have stopped working properly before, which I have queried both here and on Technet, you may have seen some posts from me there! They did come back to life though until now, whether the present problem is permanent or temporary remains to be seen. I do agree with you that they are of very limited use in many cases even when they do work! I have used eventid.net and it's very useful, but IIRC you have to be a paying member to get some of the more detailed information.

    Almost all of the help links in my XP Event Log entries now seem to be going just to the Microsoft homepage. Can anyone else confirm this? Have MS finally withdrawn the online help facility for XP with its list of what the Windows log entries mean?

    Hi jaclaz. Sorry I haven't responded to your last PM, I've been locked out of the whole of MSFN since the site "upgrade".

    It seems to be geoblocked in Europe, which I assume is a fault they're not aware of as it's been like it now for several days!

    I've managed to get to it finally by spoofing that I'm in the States, but it's crawlingly slow via the virtual VPN, and keeps losing connection if I do anything like trying to look at the forum personal messages.

    I have managed to message the site owners, so I hope it's fixed soon. I'll be in touch again then.

      I remembered after I posted that you're in Italy. The block can't be for all of Europe, as you're obviously not blocked! The guy in Sweden has just messaged me as well to say that he's now found that others he knows in Sweden can access the site, but like me, he can't, so as you say it sounds as if particular IP addresses are being blocked for some reason, rather than areas.

      I tried to use the private messaging system, but the site just kept losing connection every time, which is why I sent a message here. I've never used this "status" thing myself, but I saw your name on an entry on the right of the forum homepage, clicked on it, and it brought me here!

      Anyway, I hope the site owners get back to me soon as to why myself and others seem to be now blocked from the site.

      Unrelated, and hoping that your current issue will soon be solved, *somehow* during the board update the "country" flags of many members seemingly were shifted/mixed/whatever, I found myself with the Denmark flag on my profile, and right now you have an USA one, I guess you'd better reset it to the Union Jack, unless you are trying to be coherent with your spoofing ...

    That's because a normal XP install isn't Embedded Windows! Artificially adding that key up until very recently fooled Windows Update into thinking that it is a version of the OS that's still supported, so it still offered updates, which it wouldn't now on a normal XP installation. Updates for Windows Embedded have stopped now as well as those for normal XP, so that key now has to be removed for updates to still work. Other keys like POSReady mimic other versions of Windows that are still supported.
