  1. It's probably loaded by systray.exe , which in turn is enabled by various windows options (like enabling the volume control icon in systray)
  2. Yup, that's what i use. Hmm, probably you misunderstood some posts here (sorry if my poor english is the cause) I use a 19 inch monitor, 1152x864 resolution at 85Hz. The monitor can handle much more, that's just the settings i'm comfortable with.
  3. LOL, Link, just look at the link i provided earlier in this thread. Should give you something to think about.
  4. Here is a little old control panel applet i used since my early Win95 days (source code included). It's all you need. Just copy COOLCOLR.CPL to your \Windows\System folder and start it through Control Panel.
  5. fun: http://www.geocities.com/siliconvalley/2072/whyxpbad.htm
  6. Be sure to leave the file extension unchanged (the three letters after the last dot). Example: while a file picture.BMP opens in MS Paint and works fine, renaming it to picture.TXT will cause Windows to open it in Notepad and you won't get a picture, just messed up text. EDIT: You are welcome About your browser problems try this: 1. Logout of the site 2. Empty browser cache 3. Delete the msfn.org cookie (or all cookies) 4. Close browser, restart browser and/or computer This should be enough if there isn't some serious OS/browser/network problem. P.S. You'll need to relogin again afterwards. btw. if you're looking to replace your current browser, i'd recommend Opera. It's probably the best browser available and it's free.
  7. Based on my experience with this problem, some drivers don't hang the computer and the system enters DOS mode in a working condition, just the driver fails to set the proper video mode. I was usually able to continue my work after changing the video mode by using built-in functions in programs like Norton/Volkov Commander or a simple MODE CO80 (tested on several GeForce cards and an old 512KB Trident card)
  8. 1024x768 should do it, just start explorer and compare the overall look with my screenshot (hint: the folder tree is missing) Congratulations, let the holy beam serve you well for long years to come, inscribing the rings of enjoyment upon your shiny platters
  9. OH ECK! Try to install this new IE update from MS06-021- http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...n/ms06-021.mspx or better yet, get the patch directly from here: http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownlo...0afab75c3a5.exe The KB916281 patch for IE6 SP1 has URLMON.DLL versions 6.00.2800.1550 and 6.00.2800.1551. See if the newer builds of URLMON.DLL file work ok with Windows Update and Office Update. Just a little notice about this patch. Installing it on my system led to this: I was able to fix it by restoring an older version of BROWSEUI.DLL
  10. Hey Link22.5, I'm gonna setup a Win95 machine soon Didn't it already?
  11. rainyd, one of the reasons i choosed such a card was because these have a tv tuner integrated. Otherwise i was planning to buy a separate tuner card, but then the combined price of these two is going to be more than i can afford for now. And as my board have only 3 PCI slots, i'll need to get rid of either the USB 2 addon card or the Voodo2 card currently occupying those slots. The third slot has a network card. I use all of these. kinda sucks having only 3 PCI slots
  12. I'm currently using a GeForce 4 M61.76X 440 with the 61.76 driver. It's the latest driver working fine on this card. The newer drivers always cause missing textures, even the versions recommended here like 71.84. I'm thinking about some video upgrade. Anyone familiar with these cards to share his opinions ?
  13. can you give us a more accurate link or even a direct dowload URL to the Registry Plugin for Total Commander? Check this site. It has the Registry plugin and much more. Worth browsing if you're on a plugin hunt
  14. You'll need a boot manager. XOSL is very good one (that's what i use) and includes Smart BootManager and Ranish Partition Manager (it's 3in1, LOL). Or you can try some other. I'll explain here how to do it with Ranish. First get a startup floppy.Get this and extract PART244.EXE to the floppy. Comment out (or remove) HIMEM.SYS line in CONFIG.SYS on the floppy. Make sure you have two primary partitions on your drive, one for each of your Win98 instalations. Use whatever tool you are familiar with to make these (i preffer Partition Magic). An extended partition would be handy too, you can install there applications (games ) shared between the two 98s. Boot from the floppy and start PART244.exe. Select the MBR, press Enter and change the settings as shown here: Then select the first primary partition and set its boot flag ON using B key. Use F2 to save the changes. Remove the floppy and boot from your Win98 install CD. Install Windows on the C: drive. After you've finished with the first instalation, boot from the floppy again. Select the first partition (the one you've installed windows on) and hide it using the H key. Select the second primary partition and set it as bootable (B key). Should look similar to this: Save the settings (F2) Reboot from the CD and install Windows on C: again. When finished installing, start from the floppy again. Unhide the hidden partition. Check that the MBR settings are still the same as on the first picture (Windows likes to mess with the MBR). Save, remove the floppy and the CD, reboot. That's it, you can select which OS to start by pressing the partition number on boot (in this case 1 or 2). Enjoy
  15. In order to restore an old backup of your registry, boot in DOS, then type SCANREG /RESTORE , then select which backup you'll like to use.
  16. Can you track files changes in SFC? AFAIK it's basicaly checking the file system for errors. The advantage of VBS is that you can easily modify the source for your own need. SFC does NOT check the file system for errors, Scandisk does this. Actually SFC can do pretty much the same as your script, except that it can easily restore changed/deleted files. And yes, it tracks file changes, new files, deleted files. For changed files it displays a comparison between the old and new file, including file size, date and version. Also it can be used for folders different than the windows one, simply by creating a new profile and specifying what kind of changes to track. Simply, SFC can do the same job as your script (and more). Maybe that's why i still haven't tried it yet
  17. Look for any drivers (probably VXDs) left over from previously installed firewall/traffic control software. Check your SYSTEM.INI for any non-M$ VXD entries and try removing them.
  18. Copy the new file to your hard drive, then use some boot disk to replace it under DOS. Or use SFC
  19. Steerforth, could you invite some friend of yours to bring his laptop and try accessing that site using your connection? If that doesn't work, then it's time to change your ISP
  20. Does this happen only in IE, or other programs cannot upload too? Try some of the tests here using different browsers.
  21. LET ME GUESSS... YOU GOT AN WIN98 STARTUP DISK. YOU DONT HAVE AN WINDOWS INSTALL CD. YOU BOOT YOUR PC USING THE STARTUP FLOPPY. FROM HERE ON THERE ARE TWO WAYS POSSIBLE: 1. YOU HAVE AN WIN98 INSTALATION COPY SOMEWHERE ON YOUR HDD. IF THATS RIGHT, SELECT 1ST OR 2ND OPTION ON THE STARTUP MENU, THEN NAVIGATE TO THE FOLDER WHERE THE WIN98 INSTALATION IS LOCATED (I.E. IF ITS IN C:\WIN98 ,TYPE "CD C:\WIN98") THEN TYPE SETUP.EXE. IF EVERYTHING IS RIGHT, IN A FEW MOMENTS YOULL BE ABLE TO USE YOUR MOUSE AGAIN 2. YOU DONT HAVE THE WIN98 INSTALATION FILES NOWHERE ON YOUR HDD... SORRY PAL, OUT OF LUCK. THE FLOPPY YOU HAVE IS NOT ENOUGH TO INSTALL WINDOWS. TRY DIGGING A BIT AROUND DA NET
  22. The Program Files location is stored in the registry as "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ProgramFilesDir" You just need a way to import its value into a VBS usable variable
  23. You are asking about the icon named "The Internet" right? simple registry search reveals this: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{3DC7A020-0ACD-11CF-A9BB-00AA004AE837}] @="The Internet" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{3DC7A020-0ACD-11CF-A9BB-00AA004AE837}\ShellFolder] "Attributes"=hex:50,00,00,a4 [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{3DC7A020-0ACD-11CF-A9BB-00AA004AE837}\InProcServer32] @="C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\\SHDOCVW.DLL" "ThreadingModel"="Apartment" [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{3DC7A020-0ACD-11CF-A9BB-00AA004AE837}\DefaultIcon] @="C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\\mshtml.dll,0" I checked the file in Irfanview and it definitely contains the IE icon.
  24. If your 98 worked fine before on the same hardware, there may be some corrupted files or registry parts. If it never worked fine, either the drivers are bad or the hardware is misbehaving. Try reinserting whatever h/w you have installed (RAM, MiniPCI, PCMCIA). If you have a testing program for your exact laptop model, give it a shoot. The working Win2K doesn't prove that everithing is OK, different windows/driver versions access hardware in different ways and sometimes problems may stay unnoticed. If you have some spare space on your HDD make a new partition and install 98 there to test if it works fine. About the sound, better use the WDM drivers and set properly the BLASTER variable(or use a DOS sound-init program) so that DOS games can be noisy too.
