  1. Ahem, about the floppy: Is the floppy controler still disabled? If so, re-enable it.Does the floppy attempt to work when you try to boot from it or open the drive in Explorer/DOS (i.e. floppy light flashing, mechanical noises, spins the diskette) or it remains dead? Could be a cabling problem. Did it ever worked in the past? About the sound, are the ESS-related lines in config.sys and autoexec.bat currently enabled? If not, restore these lines and check the sound in Multimedia control panel applet again. Also, would you start Aida32, open the Information menu > Debug submenu > Devices Dump, copy the contents and post it here. Should help to identify the hardware.
  2. Enlighten me, how to fix the problem - I haven't done it before? But I WILL follow instructions submix has been helping me primarily w/ RainyShadow..I'm reluctant to bring another cook into the kitchen There're a few ways to acomplish this and which of these is available to you depends mainly on the way the card/drivers are designed: 1) Open the properties dialog for the network card in Device manager, go to the Resources page, uncheck the auto-config option, and try to change the settings there. 2) If you have the full driver package for the card, there should be a DOS utility (if you don't have it, get it from this page). Restart in DOS mode, start the utility and see if you can change the IRQ from there. 3a) Get in the BIOS setup, find the IRQ assignments menu (should be within the Advanced menu) and if the network card is listed there, try to change the IRQ. 3b) If there is no a direct setting for the card, try to disable the hardware you don't use (serial ports, paralel ports, etc.). This usually shifts/shuffles IRQs of the remaining hardware. 4) Move the card to another PCI slot. If you've fully backed up your Windows folder, you could try to reinstall all drivers at once as explained here by Tihiy. This probablywould fix all your driver problems, but there is a small possibility something to go wrong. That's why you need the backup, if things become worse than now, just restore your system to the current state. HTH
  3. Wrong. You just point to the folder with these files when windows asks for a driver.
  4. Nice Now you better refresh your backups while it still works
  5. Just remove them both. Don't reboot yet. Well, uhmmm... uncheck it. Now reboot. Then check if 2) still applies.
  6. So, does it work fine now ? Could you check the last page of System properties control panel applet for any error messages ? Is the "Force compatibility mode disk access" option still enabled in the Advanced options of msconfig ?
  7. I was wondering... could you disconnect all cables from your PC leaving only the power, display, keyboard and mouse connected. Check if that makes any difference. A friend recently experienced random lock-ups while using his PC shortly after he subscribed to an ISP. It turned out to be caused by the deffective network adapter he hadn't used untill then. So remove all network, modem, sound, etc. cables and see what happens.
  8. SMART values are not too bad, but it seems to be disabled so these numbers might not be actual. I'd suggest you get a copy of MHDD and use it to further diagnose the drive. When you start the program and select the proper drive, first type "smart on" to enable SMART, then "smart aas" to enable attribute autosave. Then press F4 and perform a full scan with remmaping disabled . After it ends take a note of the bad sectors number (if any). If there are not much of these you could just scan again with remapping enabled, this will replace the bad sectors with spare sectors. If you do this, scan again to make sure that there are no more remaining bad sectors. If there are a lot bad sectors ( more than 30-50) it's better to not remap them because you may run out of spare sectors and need them later. Better check for grouped bad sectors and repartition the drive leaving the bad areas between the partitions. You can later remap only single sectors left within partitions by performing a write operation on them (SMART remaps sectors only during writes). You could also switch the DMA mode to UDMA/33 and see if that helps. Type "config" in MHDD and if there is a setting for the DMA mode change it. You have to power-cycle the drive for this to take effect.
  9. Icons, shells... scratch that. Better focus on the core functionality, not on the appearance.
  10. Huh, I just finished describing how to enter the BIOS and i see that you already learned how to do it. Well, i'll leave it at the end of my post just in case it'd be of some use to others. Before you proceed reinstalling as submix8c said, try this: Start msconfig, press the Advanced button on the first tab, and in the new window put a checkmark on "Force Compatibility mode disk access". Don't touch the other settings yet. Press OK, then OK again to close the program. Reboot. To avoid freezed programs after windows starts, don't do anything until Windows fully loads. Wait until the HDD light stops flashing and stays off, then wait a few more seconds just to be sure. P.S. when you have to post a long list, etc. put it in a code box. This is done by adding [codebox] before it and [/codebox] at the end. Like this: Volume in drive C has no label Volume Serial Number is 390D-9DB3 Directory of C:WINDOWSOPTIONSCABS . <DIR> 07-22-99 12:09a . .. <DIR> 07-22-99 12:09a .. these). Turn off your PC, wait a few seconds, then turn it on. Immediately start pumping on the F10 key. After the Compaq logo you should see either the BIOS screen or the windows logo/startup message. If windows starts booting, press the Pause/Break key, hold the power button until the PC turns off and repeat with each F1, F2, F12, Del, Ctrl+F10 or Control+Alt+Escape keys instead of F10. When you succeed you should see a screen similar to this: (click on image to view in original size) EDIT: If you decide to reinstall, check that you have all needed drivers. The ones listed on this page probably should work on your system if it's still with stock parts. You'll also need the INF Update utility from here
  11. Hmm, this looks like a hardware problem (or a very damaged Windows). Check the voltages in the BIOS setup. Have you maintenanced your system recently, like cleaning the dust inside, etc. ? If not, maybe it's time do do it. A compressor (air pump, not sure about the english name) does pretty goog job at cleaning, just be careful to not blow away any parts. Remove the side cover of the PC case, check for blown capacitors and for excessive amount of dust on the fans and heatsinks. Remove each expansion card inside, clean it with a brush and reinsert it to the same slot (if you switch places Windows will detect it as new hardware). Avoid static electricity (don't wear woolen clothes, etc.). Call an electrician friend if you feel unsure. Make a backup of your system (at least the Windows and Program Files folders and the files in the root folder). When the PC freezes what's the last thing shown on screen? Does it respond to NumLock? Does the HDD light stay lit? Attach a couple bootlogs from unsuccessful boots. P.S. the ""t-shoot" thing is a comment added by msconfig when you disable stuff. If the line starts with REM or ";" (semicolon), it's not executed. Usually you need to press Ctrl-Alt-Del twice when in GUI (graphics) mode.
  12. You just open C:\CONFIG.SYS in Notepad and edit as you like. When you've finished be sure to save it with the same name (Notepad likes to put a .TXT extension on non-text files). If it refuses to overwrite the old file, type C:\windows\command\attrib -R -H -S -A C:\CONFIG.SYS in a DOS window (or in the Start>Run dialog) You could write it in lowercase if you wish, still works the same. There must be a space after REM. Here's an example... Original line: DEVICE=C:\ESSAUDIO.SYS Modified line: rem DEVICE=C:\ESSAUDIO.SYSor REM DEVICE=C:\ESSAUDIO.SYSor rEm DEVICE=C:\ESSAUDIO.SYSor ; DEVICE=C:\ESSAUDIO.SYS whichever you like Also, if you see the boot logo during startup, add a Logo=0 line to the [Options] section of C:\MSDOS.SYS so that you can see if an error message pops. Sometimes you just need to wait a bit. When the bootup freezes next time, press NumLock a few times and if the light on the keyboard turns on-off then the PC isn't fully halted. Wait a min. and observe the HDD light on the PC case. If it flashes then the system is doing something (so you sit and wait). If the HDD light stays lit longer than a minute during the freeze AND the keyboard lights don't turn on/off when you press a Num/Caps/Scroll lock key, then the system probably fully halted (and only Reset works). For managing startup items which load after the GUI is initialised StartupCPL is a pretty handy tool. The Autoruns program from SysInternals (now property of M$) could be used too, but you could screw-up your system if you don't know what you're doing (geeks only app ).
  13. PTSNOOP < If you have a PCTel modem AND you don't use it, you can disable this. If you never installed such a modem, check for spy/add-ware! TWEAKUI RUNDLL32.exe c:\windows\SYSTEM\TWEAKUI.CPL,TWEAKMEUP < You can delete this. TweakUI always recreates it when started (and i always delete it afterwards ) KB891711 c\windows\SYSTEM\KB891711\KB891711.EXE < usually you don't need this (unless you are a virus-paranoic), so disable it. HP Digital Imaging Monitor C:\ PROGRA~1\HP\DIGITA~1\BIN\HPQTRA08.EXE < I'd advice you to create a shortcut to this and run it only when you use your scanner. C:\ESSAUDIO.SYS < If you don't play games in pure DOS (not a DOS window) and if your soundcard works within Windows without this, then you don't need it (add a REM at the line begining) C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS < You could cut some startup time by adding /TESTMEM:OFF at the end of the line. CPQIDECD.SYS < You don't need this unless you spend too much time in real DOS, so REM it. C:\ESSAUDIO.COM -BLASTER < See my comment on ESSAUDIO.SYS above. These two probably work together, so if you disable one you should disable the other too. C:\PROGRA~1\GRISOFT\AVG7\BOOTUP.EXE < disable this for a few boots, just to be sure. How much RAM do you have? If it's 384MB or less, you better reduce this. Try MaxFileCache=65536 You could also add NoWaitNetIO=On to the [386Enh] section of system.ini , not sure if it'll make any difference though. HTH
  14. If you explain what's that 'pencil' thing would be nice. or better copy/post the actual line from system.ini I'm not experienced with ESS cards/drivers, but you could try commenting the ESSAUDIO.sys line in config sys. If sound works using the windows drivers, you don't need it to be loaded from dos (unless you play games in pure dos, but then a separate configuration would work better) NDIS2SUP is responsible for your network, SDVXD is part of the Smartdrive cache. I've seen comments on the net, that both these errors are normal, but you could at least try a different NIC driver version if you still have problems. So, does your system start fine when boot-logging is enabled?
  15. Try Gom Player. Also you could try ffdshow-tryouts as an update to the old ffdshow. The IDE light should flash even when the system reads from the cache integrated in the DVD drive, even if the drive isn't spinning.
  16. One of my systems sometimes hangs on startup and all i need to do is to enable boot logging as Tihiy suggested, then it starts fine. Maybe some weird driver misbehaves when the system starts too fast. Logging slows down the boot process a lot, so drivers have some more time to settle. HTH P.S. You could ignore the "Failure code is 0016" lines, it's normal. Did Windows started on this attempt ?
  17. Could you post the SMARTUDM report for this drive? There is a small possibility that the fault is in the cabling or the controller, not the drive. Already happened to me in the past. Aside from this, try not to use the drive until you are ready to copy all data from it.
  18. Control Panel >> Power settings >> Advanced >> "show icon in taskbar" There it is.
  19. There are two ways to do it: 1. Delete "\Windows" and "\Program Files" from the WinME drive. Edit "\BOOT.INI" and remove the line for WinME. or 2. Set the XP partition as active. Disable the ME drive in BIOS. Boot from your XP install CD and start the Recovery console, then use the FIXMBR, FIXBOOT and BOOTCFG commands to make your drive bootable.
  20. Not exactly a solution, but i use ffdshow and media player classic for flv playback. Works like a charm.
  21. Hmm... bug Intel until they release suitable drivers ?
  22. Is there a serious reason for this "discussion" to continue ?!? For the statistics, part of my work is to assemble PCs and install an OS. Some customers still demand Win98, be it due to some specific needs, be it due to personal prefference. Our inventory ranges from P2 @ ~400MHz to Athlon/P4 @ 2.4GHz, and it's a common thing someone to request a Win98 on one of the faster systems, while someone else requests WinXP on a cheap P2 (and pretty soon comes back for an upgrade:D).
  23. Looks like all you need is Opera. It does all of this and much more. And works perfectly on my Win98 box
