  1. Some information on CPU cooling: here and hereA similar thread in another forum: http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=10954
  2. What's wrong with these screenshots ? You might need to rebuild the icon cache if any icons are wrong/disorted.
  3. What about FireWire drivers ? Here are some for FireWire connected CD drives
  4. "Idle" in Process explorer is just what it says - the CPU just spends time doing nothing. Should be around 90-100% when you don't have any started programs. Do you by any chance use a program with HLT-based CPU cooling capabilities ? A lot of utilities incorporate this function.
  5. Take a look here: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=71476
  6. As indicated on the Nokia site, N70 requires version 6.81 of the PC Suite, which is for Win2k/XP. You could try running it with KUP and see what happens.
  7. If you want to just mirror your working drive, get a copy of the DOS executable of Norton Ghost, put it on your Win98 drive, reboot in DOS and use Ghost to clone the drive/partition.
  8. Some document type on your "New>" list might be somehow connected to removable media. Try cleaning the list with TweakUI and see what happens.
  9. For Award BIOS problems use BIOS Patcher on a BIOS update from your mobo manufacturer (never use a BIOS dump, it could ruin your system). Unfortunately the site is down from some time ago, here is the cache from the Internet archive. I've uploaded the required files to rapidshare. Unzip all files to the same folder, put a BIOS image there, patch it with BP-4_23.EXE (use a DOS prompt and select the apporiate parameters), restart to clean DOS session and flash the patched rom-image to your BIOS. For flashing use the version of AwdFlash suggested by your mobo manufacturer. These are the files: http://rapidshare.de/files/33482674/BIOS_Patcher_v4.23.zip http://rapidshare.de/files/33482675/cbrom_v2.07.zip http://rapidshare.de/files/33482676/LHA_v2.55.zip http://rapidshare.de/files/33482677/real_microcodes.zip P.S. There may be a newer version of the patcher. The 4.23 version was suggested for Award Bios v6.00 when i last visited the site and that's what i use on my systems. UPDATE: http://k6-2.narod.ru/ seems to be the new site. Still most links pointing to the old (non-working) domain.
  10. I'm looking for iSCSI client and target server compatible with Win9x (Win95 server preffered). Do you know any suitable software?
  11. Try ApexDC++ , it's a new DC client and seem to work fine on 9x.
  12. Open the Display Properties applet in Control Panel, go to the Settings tab and click on the Advanced buton. On the newly opened window you can select the font size. You may need the Win98 CABs for this. Yes, that is how I thought I should have been able to adjust the text size. However, when I go to Display Properties>Appearance, make any changes and apply - nothing happens. When I press CTRL+ALT+DEL it says Display Properties [Not Responding] First try doing this in safe mode (copy the Win98 CABs to your hard drive before doing it). If it hangs again, temporarily remove all fonts except those Petr mentioned, and try again. If none of these work, probably your system is seriously messed up.You may need to reinstall some windows components like IE, DirectX, display drivers, etc.
  13. Reboot in DOS mode, type SCANREG /RESTORE and select which backup you'd like to restore.
  14. Looking at the logs you provided, your PC seems to hang while initialising esdi_506.pdr. Try starting Windows from DOS prompt with each of these commands: WIN /D:F WIN /D:V If none of these work, boot in safe mode, uninstall (or disable) all HDD Controller drivers and see if it boots in normal mode at least once. Also you could try looking for a replacement IDE driver, but i doubt you'll find any suitable for your system. Provide some more bootlogs for booting in normal mode.
  15. Open the Display Properties applet in Control Panel, go to the Settings tab and click on the Advanced buton. On the newly opened window you can select the font size. You may need the Win98 CABs for this.
  16. Are all your fonts corrupt, or just some of them have problems? Did you installed anything just before this happened ? The titlebar buttons are contained within the Marlett.ttf font. You could try restoring it.
  17. Enter the BIOS setup and change the boot order to include the CD device before any hard disks. See this page for boot disks in case you can't boot from the Win98 CD. The Unofficial Win98 SE Service Pack sub-forum contains some great updates. Also you can download updates from the Windows Update Catalog page. About the program updates... this entirely depends on which programs you intend to install. Generally, look and each programs website, usually updates should be on the "downloads" or "support" pages.
  18. IZArc is a freeware which supports creating non-spanned CAB archives (use LZX compression for best results)
  19. erpdude8, no offence intended, but where did you dug this thread from? and answering to a person last seen here on 19th October 2005... peace
  20. Virtual Volumes seems a promising project.
  21. Nope, you don't need to uninstall XP. Just be sure to install XP and 98 on different partitions. You'll probably have to repair the XP boot loader after installing 98. Look here for a guide on dual-booting Win98.
  22. AFAIK this is necessary in Windows 95 and Windows 98 Standard Edition only, the default short date format in Windows 98 Second Edition should be M/D/YYYY. Petr It is not, Petr. it's still M/D/YY when doing a CLEAN install of Win98 SE. In WinME M/D/YYYY is the default. BTW - I want to get your opinion of whether or not an option to not install updated user.exe & user32.dll files should be included in the 98se SP as mentioned by shadell here: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=67610 have you encountered the screen saver taskbar problem? For the date i use dd.MM.yyyy as short and dddd, dd MMMM yyyy as long date in the regional settings applet. The screen saver taskbar problem is just a cosmetic bug. So i don't bother trying to fix it. Click on the ghost button and it's gone. Why break something else just to save a single click
  23. That's every launchable file (apps, documents, etc.) in your %PATH% variable folders + I.E. keywords ( about:blank , etc.) + all other stuff which works in I.E. adress bar. Pretty much stuff, LOL
