  1. Send To has always been a copy... you need to use Move To for that.
  2. according to Micro$oft's EULA, you're not allowed to modify any of their files, yet most of us do do that. What I find especially ironic is how easy it is to remove this WGA update, I would definitely not consider deleting a few files and registry keys as a crack. M$ does not force you to install it, and an installation of legit XP without it is legal. Thus, you should also be able to legally remove it.
  3. There's another thread about it but basically you boot to a command prompt and delete all its files. (WGA*.EXE, WGA*.DLL)
  4. Have you tried downloading and installing updated drivers from the manufacturer site?
  5. You can try the software listed here: http://hddguru.com/content/en/software/ to attempt to get the BIOS to recognise your hard drive. They bypass the BIOS, accessing the HDD directly. If that is possible to get your HDD recognised, get Norton Ghost and image it onto another drive. You'll need another drive of the same size.
  6. I think it's their problem for not putting the correct file to the right place.Viewing the source code of the page reveals: <input type="hidden" name="file_id" value="asm-windows-v4.10.4813.exe"> <input type="hidden" name="title" value="Adaptec Storage Manager Version 4.10.4813 for Windows"> <input type="hidden" name="filename" value="asm-windows-v4.10.4813.exe"> <input type="hidden" name="size" value="41601770"> <input type="hidden" name="directory" value="/raid/storage_manager/">So /raid/storage_manager/asm-windows-v4.10.4813.exe seems to be the correct path to the file, but copying/pasting that into the address bar also results in a 404.
  7. It was inherited from the floppy disk subsystem, where a twist in the cable would indicate whether the drive was A/B (or C/D for those few lucky enough to have three/four floppies ) I've always explicitly set Slave and Master on my drives, since setting them both to CS results in them both being detected as master (rubbish shows up in the Master: setting and the Slave: shows nothing).
  8. You can install remote-control software like VNC and use the network to transfer files to/from the other machines...
  9. XP I can understand, but I doubt anyone actually sells 98se original anymore... at least around here.
  10. Tried it here and the results don't look too good either: 9 106 ms 77 ms 78 ms sl-bb25-chi-5-0.sprintlink.net [144.232.20.84] 10 122 ms 95 ms 96 ms sl-bb26-rly-10-0.sprintlink.net [144.232.20.88] 11 136 ms 97 ms 95 ms sl-bb24-pen-12-0.sprintlink.net [144.232.20.110] 12 124 ms 95 ms 95 ms sl-bb25-pen-14-0.sprintlink.net [144.232.16.78] 13 118 ms 95 ms 95 ms sl-gw1-pen-10-0.sprintlink.net [144.232.5.6] 14 * * * Request timed out. 15 * * * Request timed out. 16 * * * Request timed out.Something wrong with 144.232.5.6 ? The pings aren't giving any responses either. I find the IP address somewhat strange, since 192.* are usually reserved for LAN address if I remember correctly.
  11. I own the hard drive their software is residing on, I own the processor their software is executing on, and if I don't need/want it I can do whatever I want with it."Discussion of CD-burning programs is not allowed because they can be used to make illegal copies of software"
  12. The logoff.exe can be renamed to something else, and a small program can be written to replace the logoff.exe, to perform whatever is needed before executing the real logoff program.
  13. LLXX

    file missing

I suggest switching to a different AV than Norton. NAV takes up a lot of resources and doesn't really have that great of a detection rate.
  14. I believe M$ released a set of generic OEM product keys... search their site for it (there was also a thread here with the link to it). You could try using those.
  15. You shouldn't have updated those... nor installed them in the first place Many others, even those with legit copies of XP, have experienced problems after installing the WGA update. My best advice would be to remove it.
  16. I have only 10 processes including taskmgr, and I think only 3-4 services are running.
  17. Install 98se and swap in the Win95 shell and boot logo. They'll never notice the difference, except that the system seems much more stable than usual Win95 did not have proper USB support...
  18. ACPI and APIC are two completely different things. ACPI is Advanced Configuration and Power Interface APIC is Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controller.
  19. Try cleaning the eject switch contacts?
  20. Turn off active desktop. I doubt she needs it. Try using a USB-PS2 converter on the mouse, Windows automatically supports PS2 mice so it should work.
  21. ...what is on the screen? Manually inserting commas is the only way I can think of..
  22. You could add citibank.com to your HOSTS file to rule out the possibility of a dead DNS server... Also try tracert'ing to the site.
  23. Delete the ShellIconCache in %WINDIR% and restart immediately.
  24. Try downloading and installing the 9.0c from Microsoft site. I think you really do have 7.0
  25. I don't think you can, since you can just type in the full path if you want it saved somewhere else.
