  1. Happens on XP too. Click somewhere on the taskbar to 'focus' it first.
  2. That's certainly a little suspicious... I'd say either a virus is running in the background or you have many unnecessary processes. (On my old Pentium 233MMX system with 32MB of RAM, Win98SE booted with 95% free. Now I have 256Mb of RAM and it rarely ever drops below 70% unless I open *many* programs at once)
  3. I don't know that much about the power of the SYSTEM account, other than the fact that it's more powerful than Admin. Here's how to get a 'root shell' : Open a command prompt. Invoke the 'time' command to see the current time (just press Enter again to not enter a new time). Now invoke at xx:xx /i 'cmd.exe'Where xx:xx is some time in the near future (one or two minutes ahead). Wait a few minutes and the new command prompt should appear, this one is running under SYSTEM. You can start the task manager (taskmgr) from there, close Explorer.exe and run it from this new task manager (which is also running under SYSTEM) to get full use of the SYSTEM account. As for logging in by default as SYSTEM, that requires some very complicated registry editing that I won't go into detail here (nor do I remember everything about it!)
  4. I'm still using the original XP 5.1.2600, but modified and secured, and haven't run into any malware/security problems with it. Actually I recently bought a laptop, it came with XP SP2 (as well as a whole lot of other crap) and I also formatted and installed original XP on it. For some reason SP1 and SP2 seem to increase the memory usage. My advice: if it works, don't upgrade.
  5. what exactly do they mean by that? It can't copy files with .ISO extension? What if you change the extension? This is a bit rediculous.
  6. This is probably a bad manufacturing run, as according to the Wikipedia article: ...the red ones are supposed to have a higher failure rate.
  7. They're probably making their own computer-generated 'music', it's always rather generic-sounding.
  8. It would help to read the manual.
  9. Nearly boiling water works faster, I like to do this with a pot of water over a stovetop
  10. This is the result of some very stupid patent dispute and a recent update (KB912812). At least users now have the option of not enabling all ActiveX content on load, which may be seen as a security issue. Here is a "temporary" patch that supposedly fixes it, http://capitalhead.com/articles/click-to-a...--kb912812.aspx or you can just revert to before KB912812 was installed (the only file changed is the MSHTML.DLL, you may be able to extract a virgin copy from your XP CD).
  11. This is possible, not with the usual cheap 'routers' that are being sold everywhere (which are actually NAT boxes), but with 'real' routers; in fact, the Internet is mainly composed of interlinked Routers.
  12. Mine seems to work just fine without... of course you can no longer use 'localhost' to refer to your own machine but 127.1 is shorter to type
  13. That's not really a feature... all but the lowest-end chipsets now have that capability. But *true* independent 'continuous' adjustment (i.e. the FSB and DDR frequencies can both be adjusted independently in 1MHz increments) is a feature.
  14. I'm sure the turntable output isn't going to be that high-quality anyway. I find the Realtek ALC6xx chipsets are quite good for onboard audio.
  15. You can get an Asus P5P800SE, it's basically the same as your P4P800 except for the socket (775). The Intel-produced mobos aren't known for high performance nor configurability.
  16. Windows comes with a sound recorder that will work perfectly fine for this purpose. If you want a more powerful audio editor/recorder look at Audacity (free,open-source): http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ What you should be more concerned about is the hardware, you'll likely need an amplifier since a turntable's output may not be powerful enough to be directly connected to the PC audio input.
  17. If you look in the unofficial subforum above and the older threads here you'll find topics and tools for making a customised "third edition" of 98 install CD with newer files integrated, that may be of help.

    2# HDD in WinXP

I have Logical Disk Manager service disabled, and I can still swap HDDs with no problem. Have you tried partitioning it from there?
  19. He's doing it wrong. Properly done, here's the kind of results you can get (my own system): Task manager: Processes: http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/9742/taskmgrmr2.png Task manager: Performance: http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/8457/taskmgr2la6.png Services: http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/2052/servicesnx1.png (last pic was taken after doing some editing/browsing etc. so some services might've started up, the first two were taken just after boot.)
  20. "clear"type looks more like blurrytype, unless your eyes are used to seeing things blurry
  21. Be careful of fanless PSUs. Most of them can indeed work fanless at low output wattages, but going anywhere near their rated output may cause them to overheat. Fanless ones tend to run hotter also...
  22. Read the manufacturer's specifications for the board to ascertain the cooling requirements.
  23. WinISO MagicISO UltraISO xISO (Chinese) ...
  24. Calm down. A mod would've posted something if it was not allowed.
  25. 4.51PG does not support 48-bit LBA so you may encounter many problems working in DOS mode. You may be able to upgrade to a custom build of 6.00PG but unless you have a separate BIOS flasher it is very risky and not recommended. 9MB/s, that's decent...
