  1. I know Media Player 9's installer checks the registry entry for version number.
  2. Thanks lads! I feel we have really made this list a useful reference now
  3. Her loss was a major blow to the MSFN's Win9x community.
  4. I really should have posted a link: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1207 Also here is a report on a few freeware Defragment programs. I can also confirm, the Windows Me defrag program is a good, simple yet effective replacement.
  5. herbalist, can you share your autoexec.bat and batch files contents with us? That's another registry tip I remember... 1. Restart the computer in MSDOS (Command Prompt Only) 2. At the command prompt, type scanreg /fix and then press ENTER. 3. After the Registry Checker tool finishes repairing the registry, press ENTER. 4. At the command prompt, type scanreg /opt and then press ENTER. NOTE: The /opt command-line switch causes the Registry Checker tool to optimize the registry by removing unused space. 5. Restart the computer.
  6. Make sure your hard disk is defragged... as well as your swap file (make sure its a single file with a decent minimum size) Don't have a background image (uses up valuab;e resources) and have less icons/files on your desktop Turn Off scheduled tasks, turn off automatic screen savers and power management MAKE SURE active desktop is off. (surely no one uses it?) Turn DMA on for your Hard Disks and CD/DVD drives if supported Autoexec.bat and config.sys can usually be blanked out (there but contains nothing within. Use Run -> sysedit to delete all lines)
  7. If your mobo has SATA connectors, the CD that comes with it should have SATA drivers on it. Actually I wonder if it's possible to access SATA drives at all without them installed. Yeah I'm sure you need drivers to access a SATA drive on Win98
  8. Will you be releasing 2.50 soon with NUSB 3.2 What about for Version 3.0 you integrate the 137GB patch (2225). Its been tested quite a lot and seems stable and reliable so could be installed on all systems. Would just make the patch easier to use. All people would have to do, is double click, follow the prompts and sit back as their Win98SE machine is updated with all the latest mods. Thoughts?
  9. I have tested this patch and LLXXs 48-bit LBA patch, now on a few machines and I am happy to see it added. I think LLXX's patch should be added, then basically it means Win98SE USP does it all! - All Official fixes - All critical unofficial fixes - Copy Over 2GB - Use hard disks bigger than 137GB
  10. I know you can use beyond 137GB of a portable USB2 Hard Disk when you use the manufacturers driver. but what if you just use the Mass Storage Device driver from the unofficial NUSB 3.2 and don't use the Manufacturers driver. Does windows then access the portable disk using windows ESDI_506.PDR ??? So it looks like it doesn't need ESDI_506.PDR updated? Am I correct?
  11. Sweet, so no action was required by the user!
  12. I've used Windows 2000 on a Pentium Pro 200MHz with 256MB of RAM and it ran flawlessly. Not really a gaming machine, but was fast and stable for office work and internet browsing, email etc. Just don't forget the Firewall!!! I've seen Win2000 machine hacked after a fresh install being hacked 2 minutes after they connect to the internet. Not even giving you enough time to download a firewall!!! Get the firewall and put it on a disk and make sure you install it before you connect to the internet.
  13. I was just thinking of other ways to get around the limitation. I only said 32GB because that's all WinXP will create for you. Of course you could go higher (upto 137GB) using FDISK. For extra storage you could use a portable USB2 Hard Disk (formatted to FAT32) as it isn't effected by the limit. I think this method would be a good option for people that need Win9x for older apps but mostly use Win2k/XP/Vista as their workhorse OS. How do you hide the other partitions from Win98? (and so that WinXP can still sees it?) P.S. I have used the patch on non critical machines, but I'm still a touch nervous on recommending this option to anyone who will be storing important information beyond the 137GB barrier.
  14. If you don't need any of the software or hardware (make sure you have all the drivers you need) compatibility features Win98 gives, then Win2k is a good upgrade. Win2k will require alot more HArd Disk Space too, so make sure that is not a concern. Just remember you MUST install a Firewall BEFORE going on the internet with Win2k. I'd also recommend using Firefox or Opera over IE6 to help cancel out a few more threats.
  15. If I want to create a dual boot system Win98SE / WinXP and I have a 300GB hard disk If I make 2 partitions using the Windows XP boot CD. C: 32GB using FAT32 for Windows 98SE D: 168GB using NTFS for Windows XP SP2 WITHOUT using any patches, would I have any problems with Windows 98? As Win98SE cannot recognise NTFS file system, will it basically just ignore the NTFS partition which happens to be located beyond the 137GB barrier? Can anyone confirm this?
  16. Did you have to turn off a core in the bios, or Win98 just ignored it?
  17. You have a Core 2 Duo running Windows 98!!!!! HOW!!!
  18. Maybe that can happen once we get a good collection of compatible hardware The beauty of this system for now is we can get members input. Is there any fixes for the timing issues on Win95 or Win98?
