Appears there is a bug in Winamp 5.35 for Win98/Me CD Playback is totally borked under Win98. The problem doesn't exist under 5.34. The solution: Use 5.34 OR use 5.35 and replace in cdda.dll with the one from 5.34 OR just don't use Winamp to play CD's.

Ok, I tried opening and closing and opening and closing and opening different programs over a few hours. I included playing some media files (video and music) and playing a few windowed games. My system has 256MB of RAM and the system was running stock vcache settings (ie. nothing added to system.ini) With all the programs open I had NO Free Physical Memory available. 57MB of Paging File in Use At one stage my DiskCache peaked at 103.8 MBytes but once all free Physical RAM was in use, the DiskCache was shrunk to 60.3 MB. Someone should repeat this type of experiment with larger amounts of RAM so we can determine how Windows responds when it has more RAM available.

I remember using NT4 a few years ago mostly for office work and CAD. It was pretty **** good for these uses. I can't remember having too many system problems. The fact Win2000 is built on NT technology would make me believe many of the newer features found on 2000/Xp and maybe even Vista could be ported back to NT.

I am currently doing some tests using Cacheman 5.50 to find out how much Disk Cache Windows 98 SE likes to use. So far opening a whole heap of programs at once has taken it up to 90MB then closing them all reduced it to just 70MB.

At the moment I only have a 3dfx Voodoo 4 card on my Win98 system. I can test it with that if you think it will help.

Yeah I was using the official wmv9 codec in Media Player Classic 6.4.9.1 and they didn't run smoothly. But the same video ran smoothly in Windows Media Player 9 I have the ffdshow filter running just for MPC and now it can run all wmv videos I have as good or better than WMP9

MPC + ffdshow has finally opened my eyes to what everyone was raving about. As a bonus, it is bloody efficient at decoding movies too even on my ageing PII 333Mhz

MPlayer still couldn't match the performance of WMP9 for videos I was able to get WMP9 to install on Win98 First Edition by changing my registry setting. I was also able to get it to install and run on Win95 (though it was modified a little) using the same technique, though I didn't test it thoroughly.

Seams RealPlayer has dropped Win9x support in Version 11 as well The last RealPlayer Version that works on Windows 98/Me is Version 10.5

I have just tested media Player Classic 6.4.9.1 and VLC 0.8.6c with some video files and I have to say Microsoft's Media Player 9 seams to handle the files better, faster and with less glitches. As for Audio, Winamp seams to be able to handle mp3 and wma whilst taking up a minimum of resources.
