  1. What sort of graphics do these virtualisation software support?
  2. Windows 95/98/Me is starting to run out of hardware support. So for many, the only way to run these OS's and the software designed for it is from a 'virtual box' within newer operating systems. So what Virtualisation software have people used that has allowed you to install a virtual copy of Windows 9x within new OS's. What Win9x OS's do the Virtualisation Software work with: Windows 95 Windows 98 Windows Me What modern OS's do the Virtualisation Software install on: Windows 2000 Windows XP Windows Vista Windows 7 Are they 32bit or 64bit compatible? Do your Win9x applications work What about Driver and Hardware support What are your recommendations etc etc Lets see if through a collective effort we can make a definitive guide for users who wish to use Win9x OS's on their modern machines.
  3. MICROSOFT VIRTUAL PC 2007 Required Operating System: Windows XP / 2003 / Vista / 7 32 and 64bit programs available Runs as a guest: Windows 98 / Me / 2000 / XP / Vista / 7 Features: Virtualised Hardware: 32-bit Intel Pentium II processor (but virtualizes the host processor on Windows versions) with an Intel 440BX chipset. Standard SVGA VESA graphics card (S3 Trio 32 PCI with 4 MB Video RAM, adjustable in later versions up to 16 MB). System BIOS from American Megatrends (AMI) Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16 ISA PnP (when Vista is installed as both the host (main) and guest (virtual) Operating systems, then the need to set audio configuration is removed, as the guest (Virtual) OS automatically synchronizes the settings with the host (main) Operating System.) DEC 21041 (DEC 21140 in newer versions) Ethernet network card. USB is not supported. Programs which use undocumented features of hardware, exotic timings, or unsupported opcodes may not work, although overall compatibility can be considered satisfactory. The Macintosh version of Virtual PC uses dynamic recompilation to translate the x86 code used by a standard PC into equivalent PowerPC code used by a Mac. The Windows version of Virtual PC also uses dynamic recompilation, but only to translate kernel mode and real mode x86 code into x86 user mode code, while original user mode and virtual 8086 mode code run natively. It also uses some guest call traps (especially when using the guest extensions) to accelerate emulation or offer additional features, such as integration with the host environment. Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) is the file format used by Virtual PC and Virtual Server, for which Microsoft has made available all documentation under the Open Specification Promise. Pros: Cons: Notes: The system requirements for Virtual PC 2007 (a virtualization software similar to VMWare Workstation) says that the host computer must be running Windows XP Pro or the tablet edition. You can however install Virtual PC 2007 on XP Home machine without problems though the installer will throw a warning saying "Host OS Not Supported" – ignore the error. It’s only the Microsoft will not provide support but the software will work just fine. Even Virtual PC 2004 can be used on Windows XP Home without problems.
  4. Windows Me has better memory management than Win98 doesn't it?

Geez I thought I was struggling to view the web on my Pentium Pro 333mhz
  6. Windows 9x Homepage? Go for it mate!
  7. That is great information. I will add this to the front page
  8. Yeah it existed. I remember it cost $12 in Australia to get the CD that upgraded Win98 to Win98SE. I thought it was a waste of money at the time lol
  9. This is from http://www.litepc.com/ieradicator.html
  10. How does removing IE6 effect the Windows Explorer navigation? Plus I know it will make the OS safer, but does removing IE6 make Windows run or load faster?
  11. Thanks for that update Multibooter Can it save .docx to .doc files?
  12. Just to update this story, I got a call from the boss of this company yesterday and thanked me for the Win98 systems I built him. they fullfilled a need very well over the last couple of years. He now has some problem with cad files being too large for the DOS based CNC machines to handle and wanted to know if I knew of a solution, or if he'd be best to bite the bullet and order new machines. I told him its probably time to bite the bullet. All good things eventually come to and end I guess.
  13. Can anyone save me time, and tell me if this proposition will work. Dual Boot Win98SE (C: drive) and WinXP (D: drive) Install Office 2000 on Win98SE on C: drive Install Office 2000 on WinXP on C: drive (over the top of the same office install). Install the Office 2007 compatibility pack in WinXP Now if I run Office 2000 under Win98SE, would I be able to open and save Office 2007 files?
  14. Basically as long as you have an Ethernet port / card, you should be able to use any Ethernet connected DSL modem as long as it supports PPPoE.
  15. Opera here we come!
  16. Oh I should have mentioned, on all systems I don't use Internet Explorer 6 as my default browser. On Win9x, 2000 and XP machines I use Opera or Firefox (I haven't had any problems with the newer Internet Explorer 7 in XP)
  17. I have found Windows 98SE very safe to use on the internet. Using a basic ADSL modem have not had a problem with picking up any nasty's even without a firewall. But in defence of Windows XP, I have not had any problems with Windows XP SP2 computers (the ones with the firewall on by default). When using Windows 2000 and XP without firewalls it was amazing how quickly I picked up trogans, viruses etc, one time I did no more than just logged onto Google for a few minutes, next I knew my computer was under control by someone else. There are programs out their that just PING the internet for unprotected computers. I have used Windows 2000 SP4 on the internet with a very basic software firewall program without any hassles from internet gremlins. Basically I am happy to use Windows 98 Second Edition on the internet without a firewall, but anything else newer you need a firewall.
  18. I think we should support the browsers that still provide Windows 98 support in the hope that if they see the demand, they will keep producing up-to-date compatible browsers for us.
