Maximus Decim Cumulative Update ver.3.05 (New!)
galahs replied to maximus-decim's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Somehow I managed not to see this project when it first came out but I'm sure glad I now did. This is exactly what I was looking for to recommend to clients who still use Windows 98 SE. A simple patch that gives them the upgraded security patches and basic features (Native USB, Copy 2GB and 137GB+ Hard Disk support) Thanks a million times MDGx!!! -
Great to hear your going to work on this again Gape Can I suggest your future Update has the following options: 1. Install Official Microsoft Updates (upto July 2006) 2. Install Un-Official Microsoft Updates (July 2006 +) 3. Install 3rd Party Updates (USB, 137GB +, 2GB Copy etc) That way people can install the the parts they want. I know some businesses don't allow Unofficial or 3rd party updates on their systems. Either way, great to hear we will soon have a single patch that brings our 98SE systems back up-to-date :correct:

I think on NT based machines (NT/2000/XP/Vista) the most important security feature you need is a Firewall and common sense. On a Win9x machine you can probably just get away with having common sense. (Though I don't recommend that approach)

I have ADSL 2+ using a Netcomm NB5 Comes with Win98 drivers still

Good question. With DirectX 9.0c coming to an end of development... what is the minimum yet up-to-date DirectX Package we can make?

Microsoft Windows 98 to recognize Dual-Core processors (project?)
galahs replied to ohmss006's topic in Windows 9x/ME
If not allow Win98 to use multiple cores, can we make it use 1 of the cores? ie. simulate a single core processor. Yes you wont get all the benefits a multicore cpu offers but it would mean Win9x can still be run on the latest hardware. -
A lot of people say this, and it really irritates me because I have been using a Windows XP machine for about 2 months with no virus protection/firewall and all has been fine. I only have Service Pack 2, no further updates. So how people can say this just boggles my mind. Also XP Service Pack 2 has a firewall turned on by default. I have seen XP and Win2000 machines become infected within minutes of their firewall being turned off and the user doing nothing more than accessing google. I use a Windows 98 system which sits behind a hardware firewall and I haven't seen a virus in over three years. I have a Virus scanner but I only use it to do a manual scan once every often. I must also admit that with a firewall both Win2k and WinXP haven't picked up anything either.

This is just a little tale I thought you'd be interested in reading. I went over to a mates place and he asked me to do a check up on his computer which I set up 1 year ago running Windows 98 SE. He has a USB modem, ADSL connection, and uses the internet for all sorts of things but really knows little about computers or viruses etc. I was just going to do a Defrag and some basic file keeping / backups when I noticed he didn't have an Virus Scan software, no software firewall and no ad-ware scanner. Thank goodness he took my advice in the past and only used Firefox and updated it every time it told him to. He also assured me he Clears all his Private Data at least once a week. Still, I was a little nervous as to what may be lurking on his system. So I installed and ran Adaware and AVG with the presumption a few nasties would pop up.... Guess what! Not a single item was discovered!!! Nothing! 12 months of frequent use by a 'novice user' on the internet, emails and online gaming and his system hadn't picked up a virus, trojan, key-logger, backdoor, spyware or ad-ware. WOW! Windows 98 rocks! Note: Windows 98 SE is LESS prone to getting viruses and other nasties than newer Windows version HOWEVER I still strongly recommend Win9x users have an up-to-date web browser and virus scanner as an absolute minimum.

Does Windows 98 SE have a limit on processor speed?
galahs replied to EGOvoruhk's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Nope. Windows 9x does not support Hyperthreading or Multi Core/Processors. However it may work on the system if you disable HT or Multiple processors in the bios. -
Doesn't the forceware drivers support higher resolutions than 1024x768 under Win9x
-
Good point. I never tried saving it as a Word 2007 .docx file only as a .doc Hmmm, might need the brain trust to check this out for us? or maybe its about time that I should be moving to OpenOffice
-
I might repack it in an .exe and make it available for other Win98 users too.
-
I took the Compatability patch and orca to my WinXp machine. I installed orca I extracted the compatibility .exe into a folder. I opened the .msi file with orca went to "Launch Control" in the Tables column and deleted the sole line in its condition. Saved and then closed Orca Took the folder back to my Win98 machine, double clicked on the .msi and it installed Now Word 2000 on Windows 98 can open Office 2007 open XML files The fact Microsoft put a line in disabling Win9x support is pathetic!!!
-
Thanks. Downloaded it but it wont run on Win98 either. I'll give it a go on my Windows XP machine tomorrow.
-
Is that easy to do? I really have no idea
-
I can extract it with Winzip basically contains an .msi , .cat and .cab file the .msi file fails to install I'm lost.
-
Microsoft has launched an update for Office 2000, XP and 2003 that allows them to open and save in the new Office 2007 XML format. However the installer doesn't work on Win9x. Can this be over come? Link to update... http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en

Great find mate! Keep them tucked away and in 2095 you'll be rich!

YouTube was a major problem, but as I mentioned it seemed to be a lack of MMX that caused the problem, and 366MHz CPU's have mmx or 3dnow so it wouldn't happen on your system

Q891711 + U891711 = Unofficial MS07-017 + MS05-002 .ANI fix
galahs replied to MDGx's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Thanks for the reply. -
Thanks for the heads up But I haven't had any crashes since upgrading my processor to an MMX one.
-
WARNING: The ani cursor exploit works in Win9x too!
galahs replied to RJARRRPCGP's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Thanks for testing that for the Win 95 users -
98 FE + 98 SE + ME updates + patches + (hot)fixes
galahs replied to MDGx's topic in Pinned Topics regarding 9x/ME
So what is the advantage of using the unofficial Q891711 patch over Zerts? -
I don't disagree win9x users will diminish as time goes on, I just don't think the immediate arrival of Vista would really have had a dramatic effect in reducing the number of Win9x users.
