  1. Great news. Surely with how cheap data storage is these days, and the small size of Windows 9x's updates.... Microsoft could make these patches available for a long time to come!!!
  2. I'd also recommend installing LLXX's patch. I didn't think DOS or Win98?me could even see the NTFS partitions, so why would it affect it? Its only when data has to be written or read from those sections that a problem occurs. I used to recommend to clients who needed Windows 98 but could only purchase/or already had larger hard disks, that a way around the problem was to only create partitions up to the 120GB and just leave the rest of the disk un-partitioned. Seemed to work fine.
  3. I've just been reading a touch about Me's network abilities... appears it has Win2000's TCP stack, which is supposedly more stable and up to 20% faster. Seems others have discussed it too - http://www.msfn.org/board/lofiversion/index.php/t65288.html
  4. What's the story on this? Why is e way WinMe handles internet connections better? What files are updated?
  5. I've hooked up my ADSL to my Ethernet card and it does indeed feel like its running quicker. Might be just a placebo though?
  6. Just in general... the more resources, cpu cycles, ram extra freed up the better.
  7. I currently use USB on my ADSL modem, but maybe I'll switch it over to Ethernet to see if I notice any improvement.
  8. You did install Windows 98 on the first partition (C:) didn't you? If Win98 is installed on C: drive (formatted to FAT32) and it is less than 137GB there should not be a problem. And since Win98 can't access NTFS you have basically put the rest of the hard disk off limits to the Operating System. Could be a bad install of Win98 / drivers etc? Maybe you need to re-install Windows 98 again. You can do that then repair the XP Boot loader with your choice of operating systems OPTION 1 OPTION 2
  9. With Windows 98s limited resources, would there be a noticable difference between using an ethernet connected modem and a USB modem?
  10. Are there any TCP drivers that were updated in future releases of Windows that would help Win98 if they were ported back to it?
  11. Just to clarify, WinXp supports FAT32 hard disks bigger than 32GB... it just doesn't let you create (or format) them from within WinXP or from its bootcd.
  12. I have used a 320GB, single partition, FAT32, USB2 Hard Disk on a Windows 98SE system using just the NUSB update (didn't have the Enable48BitLBA update installed) Worked without a hitch and I tested it beyond the 137GB barrier. The disk (seagate ide 16MB buffer) came with NTFS pre-installed on it, so I had to use a neat program "swissknife 3.22" http://www.compuapps.com/download/Swissknife/swissknife.htm to create a large single FAT32 formatted partition. I actually used the program on a WinXp box, but the program says it works in Win 95b/98/me/2000/XP/NT 4.0
  13. I was just looking around http://www.speedguide.net at their freeware TCP Optimizer They talk about modifying MTU and RWIN values in Windows based on what type of internet connection you have. So I ask... how well does Windows 95/98/98SE/Me support broadband (ADSL, Cable, ISDN etc) internet connections? Are their any useful updates and tweaks that are worth carrying out? Edit: Can we port the Windows Me Network Stack (which actually comes from Windows 2000) back to other Win9x OS's?
  14. How well does Win2000 support Dual Core systems?
  15. I like the idea of optional installations. Especially because I know that when used in some corporate and government environments, only Official Updates are allowed to be installed. 1. [ / ] Official Microsoft Updates 2. [ ] Unofficial Microsoft Updates (optional) 3. [ ] 3rd Party Updates (optional) You can check the appropriate box if you want the Unofficial and 3rd party updates installed.
  16. I have just got to say I am super impressed with RegSeeker 1.55 A beautiful freeware registry cleaner!
  17. Since July 2006, all of Microsofts Premium products have distanced themselves from Win9x. You might be able to force it to install by using ORCA (http://www.msfn.org/board/-t83058.html&view=findpost&p=568281#entry568281) to remove its LaunchConditions. Personally I'd recommend an even bigger steal... OpenOffice 2 --- http://www.openoffice.org Its free and does almost everything Office 2007 does and more!!!
  18. Do these registry compactors do a better job of compacting the registry than just going into the command prompt and typing scanreg/fix scanreg/opt ?
  19. With the compatibility patch, hacked to install on Win98Se, I can read Office 2007 files but can't save them as Office 2007. I can save them as Office 2000 format without a problem :correct:
  20. I have a USB2 controller card, but I still need NUSB to get my thumb drives, portable HDD, camera's and mobile phones to be detected.
  21. Herbalist you are a genius!!! I used my notepad replacement "TheGun" to open it, select all, delete, save and BINGO!!!
  22. Does anyone know how to manually delete Internet Explorers index.dat I currently delete it from safe mode, but can it be done from within windows? I know ccleaner can do it after a restart. What does it actually do to allow this to happen?
