Word Docs Switch to Read-Only After Several Saves in Word 2003
submix8c replied to mitchsc's topic in Microsoft Office
Please bear in mind that there are other updates beyond SP3 that may-or-maynot be relevant. Use ("Step up to") Microsoft Update vs Windows Update to find them using "Custom" vs "Express". Once you find the KB# you can search for it to (maybe) get the Full Download. -
Did anybody notice that Dell is attempting to go "Private"? Do you think that may be significant to Dell's snuggling up to MS? http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/02/05/us-dell-buyout-idUSBRE9140NF20130205 http://www.dell.com/us/p/d/campaigns/windows-8-consumer

?Guess I must be "confusing" or "getting confused". Just as the Directory Entry is "flagged" and the actual File Clusters are "still available" unless over-written (file no longer intact/corrupted)... (now I got messy again...) Let me pose it this way - Wouldn't a "simple copy" (by whatever program) not know whether it should "reuse" the exact same Clusters as the Original File occupied resulting in "copying" it to a brand new set of Clusters since it has no way of knowing it's the exact same file and filesize thus causing fragmentation and "free cluster gaps" after a perfectly good "defrag" operation? It seems that's the point of IF you (operation sequence) source->backup->format-source->backup->source -OR- a suitable full-defrag Only Once. Only a MOVE of a File/Folder from DirectoryA to DirectoryB within the Same Partition would the Original Clusters be retained. The OP's problem with it lies with the fact that they (operation sequence) source->backup->defrag-source->backup->source The CENTER operation causing the "re-frag" and the confusion over "why should it". Clarified? True?

According to this, the Office 2003 Compatibility pack is "thought" to be the culprit (not resolved) - http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/outlook/thread/7a2ede91-2864-4e07-8a14-fc4a44a97c9e/ Here it indicates Outlook 2003 and a "fix" (a/l for OL2K3) - http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f57/solved-the-procedure-entry-point-635260.html This one (nonsensically) indicates KB926436 (XPSP2 though) did "something" - http://www.tech-archive.net/Archive/Windows/microsoft.public.windowsupdate/2007-02/msg00984.html This one also indicates a "3d party software" may have replaced it (Vista) - http://www.winvistatips.com/procedure-entry-point-_resetstkoflw-could-not-located-dynamic-link-library-msvcrt-dll-vista-t87164.html Above found by Google "msvcrt.dll" "office 2003" "_resetstkoflw" So, you installed the latest Office 2003 Service Packs?

Ummm... I wouldn't use NSW2002 Defrag if I were you (IMHO). Also, guess you didn't read and understand this - http://www.forensicswiki.org/wiki/FAT Remember "file-based"?IOW, if the FILE already exists a COPY operation has no way of knowing it's the Exact Same File. Your scenario - 1 - Back up to "elsewhere" 2 - Defrag Source and all OK 3 - Restore from "elsewhere" 4 - Source is now "fragged" SO... in Step#2, the DIRECTORY entry gets a "brand new Starting Cluster" and all subsequent "clusters" will go "wherever", thus causing "refrag". I said so here Seriously, you're wasting a lot of time defeating your primary purpose of Defrag. Kind of like cutting your finger, putting a bandage on it, then cutting through the bandage and wonder "why am I still bleeding". Defrag with tool suggested and have done with it.jaclaz/rloew - is that correct?

Help please Making Standalone Exe from Addons (Onepiece)
submix8c replied to illeach1's topic in Application Installs
Add-Ons are for Integration as Hotfix only. That's why they are CALLED Add-Ons. You need the Full File Downloads. Go here to find IE8. Also listed are all of the Hotfixes - http://xdot.tk/updates.html For WMP11, take a look at the Thread where you found it to get the List Of Hotfixes Included and - 1 - Go to MS and download WMP11 Install File 2 - Find at MS all KB numbers listed in the Thread and download http://www.ryanvm.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6442 Now go BACK to your First Topic as a reference and just "do it" - www.msfn.org/board/topic/161836-runonce-help/ BTW, for WMP11 the OS is SUPPOSED to be Activated+Genuine so there's a couple of OTHER MS Install Files needed to even satisfy the requirement. See this - http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/2577/wmp11_install_windows_media_player_11_without_activating_bypass_wga/ WMP11 is a bit "trickier". Bear in mind you will ALSO need all of the Silent Install parameters for all of the files to be installed. Edit - Forgot to mention IE8 installed this way REQUIRES Reboot before IE8 Hotfixes can be applied and then ANOTHER Reboot. ("Bump" indeed...) -
http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-display-windows-7-build-number-on-desktop/ http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-remove-watermark-from-windows-7-sp1-beta-desktop/ Hey, it's yours so it's on your head... http://operating-systems.wonderhowto.com/how-to/edit-remove-windows-7-watermark-363408/ BTW, above video shows it does work. And it's also displaying the "en-US" folder - Doing the right one? Still is it displaying the Original "Genuine" or is it displaying "Evaluation"? As I said - wondering.

So, yours is Activated and has this exact watermark Windows 7 Evaluation Copy, Build 7600 I understand you want "change it". The QUESTION is WHY it shows the watermark as "Evaluation" in the FIRST place. "Build 7600" = no update to "Windows 7 Service Pack 1 RTM Build 7601.17514.101119-1850"? Here's the point - a WATERMARK shouldn't even EXIST! And you shouldn't even be able to ACTIVATE an "Evaluation" version. The ONLY way you can activate an Evaluation version (which is ENTERPRISE) is via a MAK key (ENTERPRISE) - see this - http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itproinstall/thread/9e7cad94-579d-487e-95a9-a6335ad52b26 So... 1 - You have Windows 7 Enterprise Evaluation Installed 2 - You obtained a MAK (or maybe a KMS key and it's Activated 3 - You STILL have the "Evaluation" watermark How odd!!!

Now that's weird, Board Statistics reduced
submix8c replied to CharlotteTheHarlot's topic in Site & Forum Issues
I believe there MIGHT have been a "Spambot" purge. I also checked about the "outage" and found that it MIGHT have had something (the outage) to do with "Disk Full" or something. FWIW, I had noted that "Record" several days ago (before the "down" period). Hmm... maybe the SQL DB got "reorg'ed" and/or "cleaned up" to "fix" some busted stuff (the "other" error that occurred). -

x64=17,281,456 bytes MZ......................@...............................................!..L.!This program cannot be run in DOS mode....$....... i586=17,021,360 bytes Not really interested in bothering with unpack. No x64 OS installed ATM to "extract" it anyway. HOWEVER I got this when trying to "run" it... It appears good... (note: x64 box sitting next to me "disassembled")Maybe I just got "lucky". Nope - just did it AGAIN!!! Downloaded fine - http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp http://javadl.sun.com/webapps/download/AutoDL?BundleId=73859 err - above is JRE7U13 (may as well DL them too) THIS is JRE6U39 - http://java.com/en/download/manual_v6.jsp http://javadl.sun.com/webapps/download/AutoDL?BundleId=73923 And it downloaded...

Hmmm... minor (I hope) interjection. Fragmentation vs Contiguous (along with directory entries and cluster flags) may be a "key" to understanding. http://www.forensicswiki.org/wiki/FAT I could (almost) guarantee that if you 1 - In XP, create a Folder on the NTFS 2 - XXCOPY the FAT32 files to the Folder 3 - Format the FAT32 4 - Copy IO.SYS, MSDOS.SYS, and COMMAND.COM from the Folder back to FAT32 5 - XXCOPY the Folder, without "Overwrite" option, back to FAT32 that it would be totally Defragged. Refer to this (post by "steve" - same thing...) http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/141199-32-contiguous-space-defrag Copying back-and-forth-and-back-and-forth is what you're doing (see my first link). As jaclaz said, it's the WAY you did it. Using (e.g.) GHOST to Backup then Restore does it (loosely described) based on recreating each FOLDER and then each File ONE TIME, thus no Fragmentation and completely Contiguous starting at the "front" of the Partition, and working "back". Defrag (Wiki) backgound - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disk_Defragmenter_%28Windows%29 All of MS' "defrag" fails in the above respect. I quit using it for that very reason. Jaclaz' suggestion (if you insist) is a pretty decent alternative. Also see this (look for "SCANFRAG") - http://www.mdgx.com/upd98me.php The WinME version seems to do quite well in DOS-Only but the CONTIGuous problem will/may still exist. [/interjection]

submix8c replied to forever0donotknowme's topic in Unattended Windows 7/Server 2008R2
PLEASE use more meaningful Topic Titles!!!! are NOT a good Titles!!!You have THREE questions, the FIRST of which was ALREADY "partially" answered and a TOOL to do everything for you! A DESCRIPTION of the TOOL (WISM), with PICTURES) is here - http://www.bohack.com/2011/01/how-to-make-an-unattend-xml-sysprep-file/ Download it and USE it to make Customizing a little easier for you! A little more info (and click on the LINKS inside it) - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc709693%28v=ws.10%29.aspx Also, use Google with this as Search (even answers "what is oobe") "unattend.xml" site:technet.microsoft.com -social HTH -
So you want to change the Watermark Windows 7 Evaluation Copy, Build 7600to Windows 7 Light Edition Build 7600 One might ask... did you EVER use a REAL Legitimate Product Key (YOUR key when you PURCHASED Win7) and ACTIVATE it? Evaluation Keys will not make it Permanent/Activated. Why in the world would you want to hack your OS otherwise? The indication is that you have an Evaluation (Time-Bombed) Version and not a Retail Version. http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/8969-evaluation-copy-watermark-windows-7-desktop.html

Firefox 11.0.0.4454 + NoScript 2.6.3 (JRE6U39 - NOT the JRE7) .... No problem... Of course, I WILL note (didn't mention before) that the FIRST time it downloaded "badly" (went too quick even though "claimed" full size downloaded) - didn't trust so did the i586, then RE-did the x64. Got them both sitting right here...
-
??? I got mine via FF - both of them (JRE6U39).

As the "See this" link I gave provides. If you were to Install Attended or do a Sysprep w/MiniSetup then that's the Final Phase of Setup (First Logon) and you (under those circumstances) enter a New User Name, Region, Network Setup, etc. Again - Textmode/Guimode/Welcome (a visual): http://www.blackviper.com/os-install-guides/windows-xp-home-install-guide/ RunonceEX happens after #28 and during #29 before the Desktop finally COMPLETELY displays. Runonce happens BEFORE that. Anything after that is Using The OS and subsequent Logons are irrelevant to Installation because, well, Installation is complete.

NT4 - Shuting down and restarting the server
submix8c replied to am12348's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Ahhh! The "Thread Merge"... -
XP Install is - 1 - TextMode (copies to HDD) then Reboots 2 - GuiMode Install OS and anything listed in CMDLINES.TXT then Reboots 3 - "Welcome" - This is First Time Logon See this Post#2 indicated TWO ways - a - Using $OEM$ (at ROOT of CD) copies to HDD during TextMode (#1 above) and the link to the structure was given. b - Using ANY FolderName (at ROOT of CD) + Variable "%source%" (from CD) No Copy To HDD during TextMode as the Screenshot indicated. Sample screenshot in post#2 was from here. Read this explanation. In both cases #2 above will happen. In post #4 you indicated "Install At First Logon" (I missed that part, sorry...) and "Directly From CD". I suppose it could be done that way (from CD) if you used the code given in the previous Runonce Explanation link (above) in your RunonceEX (gets the CD-Drive Letter). Your method was from a link within Post#7 which was specifically for CD (second way). You opted for HDD (first way) and the Alternative Finding CD way is in above link. A simple modification to the CMD's would allow for Second Way (the "SET PP" part). What we had specifically missed was that you wanted it all to happen during User First Logon, i.e. RunonceEX as opposed to Runonce (difference explained here) so it could be "seen". Either/Or Method is fine - Runonce after First Reboot (#2) during GuiMode or RunonceEX after Second Reboot (#3) during Welcome Logon. I note that you've linked items already linked in the Unattended. I also not that you've, in essence, done exactly what Unattended said to do. Both of these are alright if your intent is to "log" what you did as an Example to other Members, BUT... Be forewarned ANYONE that reads the above post - The Procedure Is Specifically For The Original Poster And Is An Example Only!!! Go to the LINKS to get all info on "How To" and construct YOURS according to your needs as THIS ONE is Customized for the OP's purposes. Repeat - DO NOT USE LINE-FOR-LINE -AN EXAMPLE ONLY!!!! Glad you got it figured out. And you did it on your own. Congratulations.

NT4 - Shuting down and restarting the server
submix8c replied to am12348's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Maybe scheduling SHUTDOWN instead? http://www.robvanderwoude.com/shutdown.php Reference here -http://ss64.com/nt/shutdown.html "Random" site (I like that term now!) giving the MS Link and some info - http://smallvoid.com/tweak/winnt/files/winnt4sp4st.htm Another "random site" (google cache) File is not on MS anymore (even with Wayback). But Google "sp4rk_i386.exe"Inside the EXE is a CAB and inside it is "NETMGMT_NETADMIN_shutdown.exe". You could ALSO maybe try the PSSHUTDOWN (robvanderwoude link above lists it). Wouldn't either one of these be more "direct"? -
(system dropped...) Please read my edited post. Networked appears to be out of the question even with 16-bit because you'd still need to interconnect and "share" the Source HDD. You could probably set up DOS-based IP's but the "share" may or may not be able to be done. MAYBE a Running Windows on Source (to create a Share) then use DOS "net use" on Target? You would have to already have a Running OS on both ends to use XXCOPY (32-bit), otherwise... AFAIK, only Commercial Software (e.g. Symantec Ghost) is able to do that in DOS. Anyone else see a way to do it Networked (LAN)?

Well, YES, but was a bad way of putting it - REPLACE would have been a better term.OP never mentioned a Dell Install CD, although OP MAY have one, in which case this Dell Install CD / Recover Partition subject had been hashed before along with the link given. One might "assume" (barring the COA legal implications) that the Original HDD would ultimately remain in the Dell. If the Dell is Home then the Pro CD will do no good. The OP has not specified ANY specifications whatsoever even though the request for them was made. Ultimately without that the OP has no choice except to read the given link, attempt to construct a CD from the contents of the HDD and a Good Luck To You given. Outa here! And... Good Luck To You.
