Before you rant, investigate "how to". As I said, you have to learn NEW ways of doing (almost) the SAME THING! How to change the DEFAULT Download Location - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/download-files#ie=ie-9 Notice that it says IE9, BUT it works the same if you look at the IE10/IE11 "instuctions". Basically, it APPEARS that (note that I do NOT have my Windows 7 PC up and running to double-check) it works VERY similar to IF you save a Web Page, the Last Save Location is retained. If you don't like that you no longer have the "option", I don't know what to tell you. I DID state specifically It's one of the "prices you pay" when you "upgrade", no matter WHAT OS you "upgrade" from/to. Another FREE Download manager of note: http://www.flashget.com/index_en.html HTH

NO! Stealth Mode is NOT a Block, It's a TOTAL IGNORE! AGAIN, you are TESTING the ROUTER (External) IP (did you not note the IP GRC gave you?) and NOT The COMPUTER (Internal) IP (LOCAL assigned IP by the Router's DHCP Service). AGAIN, you do NOT have STEALTH on XP - READ THE TECHNET LINK! HTH
-
Well, be in for more "surprises" (moved/changed/added/removed functions/features) between XP and Win7. It does take a bit of playing around to find everything again. And it's a real treat to re-set it up so it looks/acts "similar" (only). I'm not really sure what "settings" would be retained when "upgrading" over XP (never done that), if that's what you did.
-
I think you misunderstand this stuff. 1 - NAT translates your EXTERNAL to the INTERNAL, not the other way around, as you "think" 2 - NOW you say your Router is set to Stealth (now that you know what it is), which is good 3a - You misunderstand PING. Reread the text after another test -OR- read this (still applies) - http://pic.dhe.ibm.com/infocenter/powersys/v3r1m5/topic/p7hcgl/ping.htm 3b - The Router MUST allow that so your ISP can "find" you to assign an IP (an assumption on my part). It WILL be opened on the Router and then Closed (or at least SHOULD be). In all other cases (Ports) you are "invisible". 3c - The setting on your PC Firewall on you INTERNAL IP is applicable regardless. The GRC test is testing your EXTERNAL ROUTER IP Address, and NOT your INTERNAL PC IP Address. I thought I made it clear about MY settings and "how stuff works" (I gave you links to learn about that). 3d - Your XP Firewall does NOT do Stealth Mode (ref. the MS TechNet article link), so yep, it's NOT "invisible". 3e - IOW, someone OUTSIDE can "see" your EXTERNAL IP (an attack on a Router is kind of foolish), but they would be BLOCKED at the PC (Internal IP) but still "there". Be aware of requirements for WWW/FTP/FileSharing ports. I personally had a little "learning curve" to set myself up for this stuff on my INTERNAL IP PC 3d Party Firewall. I see no reason to provide you with my paricular settings since you aren't "serving" anything and (apparently) connect to the Router -AND- any Local LAN PC's would have to have their Windows Firewall set up to allow intercommunications for (at minumum) File Sharing (look at the other settings in it). Side note: It's entirely possible to make a simple "base" (even an OLD one) PC with One NIC In and One Or More NICs Out and use it as a router by installing a DHCP/NAT Server type of OS (Linux or any flavor of MS Server). I've done that on my Server before. In THAT case it would STILL have to respond to a Direct Cable Modem (not a router) request in order for the Modem to assign the Dynamic (single) IP. You're protected as well as can be. Just do some more "light reading" so you'll understand better. HTH

Technet "Stealth Mode" - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd448557%28v=ws.10%29.aspx Take a look also here (look for the "Stealth Mode" paragraph) - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/understanding-and-using-firewalls/ http://www.linuxtopia.org/LinuxSecurity/LinuxSecurity_Firewall_How.html Basically, a hacker can detect "you are there", regardless of blocks. A "closed port" is not the same as "you can't even see me". At the risk of "hacking off" jaclaz ( ) try this - https://www.grc.com/default.htm Scroll down to "Shields Up!" and select "All Service Ports". Bear in mind, the it's using my external Dynamic IP provided by my ISP (the one the Router sees) and my Firewall (3d Party) does NOT have "Stealth Mode" set. I get a different result if the Firewall has "Stealth Blocked Ports" enabled. -AGAIN-, I have FTP/HTTP ports passing through the Router and have some "special" settings in the Firewall itself (for e.g. Local File Sharing, etc.). -ALSO- note that i do NOT have my Main PC on the Router in the DMZ. Does that help? Please report back any results you may have with the Windows Firewall, if you don't mind. (Not in the mood to fire up a "vanilla" XP machine right now). edit - forgot to mention that you can find out more via this Google "stealth mode" firewalledit2 - AH! I also do NOT have "full" Stealth set on my Router, also an ATT 2wire, as noted in the following - http://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/no-firewall-will-stealth-my-ports-no-router-stealth-mode.334217/ (forgot the setting was there - duh!) HTH

Well, ...ever heard of "stealth mode"? And see Post#34 - there ARE OutBound connections - call them "Phone Home".

Get Windows XP x86 to recognize more than 4Gb with PAE?
submix8c replied to AnX's topic in Windows XP
Looking at the Downloads... http://support.asus.com/download.aspx?SLanguage=en&p=1&s=24&m=M5A99FX%20PRO%20R2.0&os=29&hashedid=LVnr9hOsmMV1eWsw ...there are 3 (three) versions, all allowing for x86 and x64 of XP, Vista, and Windows 7, the latest also supporting Windows8.x. Generally speaking, you will (almost) -never- find drivers specifically for Server 2003 (I always use the XP ones). I'm betting that the problem is that the x86 Driver is "inadvertantly" being loaded High(?). May I suggest using the XP x64 Driver? -
Slipstreaming XP Pro from XP upgrade & Win 98se
submix8c replied to diehdd's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Agreed. The basic concept is much the same though. I guess I should create a "fully functional script" (but not right now) using (e.g.): COPY NUL "C:\<ISO-rootfolderpath>\<variablenamefromCDfilename>" (the variable being the "i" in the BASH example but the filename being from the actual CD) BTW, I'd never heard of this "method" since I've never had to deal with an "Upgrade" version before. -
Did I mention I have both a Gateway (AT&T) with NAT (-not- necessarily a "form of security") -with- Firewall Enabled -and- a 3d Party Firewall? I have Server Services and allow Ports21+80 on the Gateway -and- the 3d Party. With its Firewall (Gateway) disabled I get lots of "hits" on my Software Firewall (on the PC). It does -not- matter whether MS or 3d Party, those open ports are begging to be blasted, even through NAT. You will notice that most -real- experts agree that a Hardware Firewall far surpasses a Software Firewall. Don't be fooled by such statements as this (found ALL OVER the WWW) - http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/N/NAT.html Uhhh, also look at what NAT is and you'll see why this is -not- necessarily true. All this will do is "protect" you from a DIRECT IP attack, while NAT will gladly pass "whatever a slick hacker" wants to pass to you (through NAT). Notice it -also- says a "TYPE of firewall" and NOT "a firewall". Did I mention that MS Firewall stinks and only prevents (-most-) INBOUND Ports? "I just installed this 'free' software and now I get all kinds of popups. How come?".

Hmmm... Mine seem to work from here (after unpacking with e.g. 7zip) - C:\Documents and Settings\<youruserid>\Local Settings\Application Data\Supremus Corporation\Windows Updates Downloader Looking for -where- this is specified now. edit - also required: "The .NET Framework, version 2.0.50727 or newer, is required." edit2 - Look at this - Yep, that FolderName is fixed! "How To" for Portable: https://www.raymond.cc/blog/windows-updates-downloader/ HTH

OK, then... No problem here (SP3 pre-integrated, both Home and Pro, depending on the original OS). I've reloaded several after using the prior version of nLite and the UDC script downloads. So, one might question the author's suggestion of Integrating SP3 with UDC and having failures when they, personally, begin with SP3. And noting the used the latest nLite. To repeat - MSDN -is- retail -unless- it's the Volume -and- as I said the -only- differences is the -special- files (both Home and Pro, but -only- Pro AFAIK is/was on MSDN), of which nLite is totally unaware of. The whole idea behind the CAB files was specifically to circumvent the "problems" nLite had with mult-version Update Packs, true? Perhaps they should be redirected to MSFN, particularly this thread.

Looking to upgrade my software firewall. Recommendations?
submix8c replied to a topic in Software Hangout
Outpost Firewall Free? The "older" v1.0 one (I use it on my 9x) is highly configurable and a somewhat small footprint (pretty basic). http://free.agnitum.com/ -or (?)- http://www.agnitum.com/news/outpost-firewall-free.php Difference - http://www.agnitum.com/support/kb/article.php?id=1000264〈=en HTH (and maybe it doesn't?) -
I think you misunderstood. THERE IS NO MSE AVAILABLE fo Win8.x! In Vista/Win7/Win8 it -IS- Defender (as I said) -and- ATM MSE ("Super" Defender) is -only (currently) available for Vista/Win7 (and apparently POS 2009) -unless- you get the FileHippo (or archives -or- "offering" from MS Update -not- Windows Update?). Sorry for any confusion that may have appeared in my previous comments. HTH and "Happy MSE'ing".

Try RegCompact Pro, Registry Compressor - http://www.experimentalscene.com/downloads/ Also, use CCleaner to ensure no "junk" in the Temporary Internet Files and delete any TEMP folder contents. Then with a LiveXP (WinBuilder), you can delete the Pagefile and Hiberfil, then defrag the Partition. They get rebuilt on next boot. I have a scad of "extra" software on my PC and also experience no slowdowns. Also installed since (apparently) 2006 or (maybe) 2009. Note that -any- "services" starting (including any 3'd party -or- malware) will case boot -and- operation to "slow down". Since it's an SSD, the only other thing I can imagine is "something" is going "wrong" with it. HTH

@jaclaz - it -may- have something to do with some "long filename(s)" that get integrated, meaning you -must- also use Joliette (the names are used during GUI-mode, accessing Joliette indices/names). Pre-integrated doesn't suffer that affliction (all short names, so Joliette is unnecessary). @-X- - Did he mention which -SP version- of XP he started with? I don't see that in the Twitter convo, only that he said something about MSDN (SP3) being different, and the -only- thing different betwen MSDN versions and Retail/OEM(generic)/OEM(specific) are those "special" files. It appears that SP2/SP3 includes MP9, so -maybe- nuhi inadvertantly incorporated a "glitch" during the attempt to directly integrate. So... I don't get it either...

Slipstreaming XP Pro from XP upgrade & Win 98se
submix8c replied to diehdd's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
(sigh...) You didn't even read the links. You don't even NEED the "physical" files - you can make "DUMMY" filenames. Indeed, ONE of the links indicates a Script to ZERO them prior to creating a CD/ISO. No need for a DVD. -
OK, you're gonna LOVE this, all of the XP x64 Users! Filehippo -also- has the XP-supported x64 under the name... VISTA! I have double-checked this and it's -sxactly- the same as the Original, so you now have TWO choices of "where to get XP MSE x86/x64". Either FileHippo -or- Web Archive will work! Get the XP/Vist/Win7 x64 (yes, all three, but we -only- care about XP) from here - http://www.filehippo.com/download_security_essentials_vista_64/51104/ HTH and Happy MSE'ing! ======== @-X- Maybe you could update post#1 to reflect this (even though you only work w/x86)? Also, have you "tested" the "theory" that the Definitions work with the "older" version (post#2)? This would allow for "multiple" PC's to be "updated" by a single download, if anyone is actually using MSE... -edit- Dang! Post#35 has the exact same FileHippo/WebArchive x86 but the "modified" date is newer. MS, you crazy people!

Embedded logo in IO.SYS - how to extract/convert?
submix8c replied to Marztabator's topic in Windows 9x/ME
@oldskool - Sorry to disappoint you (ref post#5 that you indicated), but that's good for WinME (IO.SYS is compressed, as has been already said) and Win98 is different (IO.SYS is not but the BMP inside it is). The OP specifically is asking for 7.1 and not 8.0 (ref post#7). In addition, the links you give are for 1 - Non-embedded BMP/SYS files (no extraction functionality) 2 - 8.0 (wrong version and references what has been said here) HTH (and no offense intended) -
Slipstreaming XP Pro from XP upgrade & Win 98se
submix8c replied to diehdd's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
@oldskool - You ARE aware that "some" Fixes for XP don't "directly integrate" and require special handling, right? That's what nLite is for. Also, the OP has already stated that they do NOT want to "swap CD's" and is perfectly aware of the "swap" procedure. XP and 2K are two different (although similar) OS and Fixes have changed how they work since the last 2K Fixes were released. IOW, your BAT file will -only- work for "some/most" of the Fixes. Go ahead and download one of the -latest- XP fixes and run it from a CMD prompt and ask for "help" and you'll see what I mean. In addition, the LATEST ones can NOT be directly extracted (with e.g 7-Zip) either (different compression method). IOW, your BAT Script will not (completely) work. Many of us (including jaclaz) have -multiple- OS Sources (e.g DOS all the way through Win8.1) and know perfectly well how the work (most of the time). I personally have DOS3->Win7 (ALL of them, excluding "interims"). HTH (and no offense intended) -
There is no "list" of URL's. The same Definitions are used by each. http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/171498-need-microsoft-security-essentials-grab-it-now/ The Definitions URL will CHANGE from Release to Release. If you mean the Software, there will be ONE ONLY for each Language/Version and it CHANGES for each Version released. IOW, there are NO FIXED URL'S! You may get the CURRENT one(s) for the Language in question ONCE and use it UNTIl the next URL is given for even NEWER. HTH.
-
1 - @Flasche - kind of "implies" that the newer version (with a "mod") may be installable to "standard XP". 2 - @-X- - Kind of "implies" that it's still available but ONLY through MS Update. (wow!)

Embedded logo in IO.SYS - how to extract/convert?
submix8c replied to Marztabator's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Posting this so it WILL be noticed! @dencorso - the LOGO.SYS does not exist in the CD - only LOGOS, LOGW, and SULOGO ("First Tim") exist. http://www.themeworld.com/support/walls-change.html At the bottom of the link, is a set of VC++ programs. I downloaded the Win98 one and ran in on my VPC Win98SE installation. It appears that they could CARE LESS which OS you're running. All three of the files (LOGOS, LOGOW, LOGO) WILL get installed into the correct place. Happy now? -
