  1. @Mijzelf: Read this (VIA Arena) re: usbv1/usbv2 http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageI...leID=68&P=3 The specs changed. My mobo has USB-1.1 (4 ports, 2 hubs). I also have a USB 1.1 card and a USB2.0 card, so all USB's are NOT USB2. @Spock: No specs found on "HI SPEED<snip>". "How do I know" probably irrelevant. Since you know the chip on Add-In (3038), how about the On-Board? Possibility your mobo is "stuck" (i.e. internal usb not being disabled) due to the "strike". (?maybe not "broken"; tried re-flashing the BIOS?). I have one mobo claims COM-port disabled but still gets found by Windows. Not sure if you can "share" the IRQ's between the Dial-Up and ADSL modems. Anyone want to try to find the info on "how-to"? This would be the best way to go (since you use only one-at-a-time). OR... get a single-USB (2 ports) without firewire. this will use only one IRQ for the add-in (like my USB 1.1).
  2. Try removing all USB-oriented items in the Device Manager, reboot, and see if they reappear. If they do, ???. Also, some add-in cards have an "extra" internal USB1.1 (the IRQ11 one, most likely) that can sometimes be "disabled" on the add-in board. Check the documentation on the add-in to see how it "works"... HTH
  3. soporific : Brother's tee-shirt (I need one) "Help, I'm talking and I can't shut up!""Wordiness" due to IT experience; too technical (above others' head) req' detailed explanation. Edits to post necessary to follow-up in case others have already read / keep from wasting additional post. Press on, folks! (<<snip snip snip>> for brevity; info retained for feedback / test results) Attachment contains info / Test probs / feedback / Test assist info (brief as possible) edit: go here- http://www.msfn.org/board/Auto_Patcher_Win...059#entry666059 Thx to NativeTexan for reminding me of WinKey (doh!). In addition, "kablooies" in Explorer and IExplorer (Invalid Page Fault). Reverted to Dr Hoiby patch (should not have mattered), and uninstalled PowerMenu. PowerMenu uninstall was when "kablooies" happened. Went Safe, Scandisk Full, then Defrag, then Safe/Command deleted win386.swp, then scanreg/backup. Rebooted. All ok again (so far)! Sticking with this until/unless it gets sick again; then @#$%! post_attach_1.txt
  4. A Maximum is a Maximum as far as Win98SE (and any other OS for that matter) is concerned... it is an OS limitation... use what you find here on MSFN, push it to its max, and expect to reach it and have wasted your money on a perfectly good XP/2K3/Vista machine... Not to say "don't use Win98SE", but a dual-core processor, 4GB ram? Come on!!! You're building a Toyota around a jet engine!!! Case closed... I'm outta here (apologies for being curt/rude, but this is getting ridiculous... are you, like, 5 yrs old or something? how many times do you have to be told?)...
  5. ... and where do you see an IRQ and/or memory being used by the ISA slot?Go to Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Information Now click on the "+" sign in the left pane next to Hardware Resources Now click on each-and-every category under it. Report back if you see anything that has the word "ISA" in it. If you see nothing with that word in it then you are not using any resources (IRQ, Memory, etc.) by that ISA slot... Or do you have an ISA card in it (not a PCI card) as described above? If so, then what is it? ISA cards are 16-bit old-technology but still used for, e.g., a Network Card or Modem or Sound Card. As I said, I have an ASKey 56K v90 ISA card in my ISA slot and I would be foolish to disable it just to "gain resources" because then I couldn't use it... Oh yeah, how about giving us an idea of what kind of computer you have? Brand name, model, etc. Not once have you told us, so how can you help you any further? Shut it done, unplug it, take off the cover, and see if there is an ISA slot that has a card in it. If you don't know what an ISA or PCI slot looks like then do a Google search; some web site most undoubtedly will have pictures... (ISA slots are usually brown or black, PCI slots are usually white or beige or tan; the SLOT, not the CARD in the slot). Please be kind and don't drive us nuts without giving some kind of information...
  6. soporific : Yep, it definitely bites (see above post)! I cloned the above to the "real HDD" using the "dr-hoiby" fix (logged on and using it now) and it is not a VPC2K4-specific problem. One of those AP Patches (also in PR2?) must be the culprit! This time it was not Explorer (obviously) but IExplorer... I had initially logged on, right-clicked on sub-forum "Unofficial Win98...", clicked on last-page link of this topic, dropped my cursor to the taskbar, and it would not pull up! Until... I clicked "Restore" in both windows. I closed the second window, logged off out of the first and closed it (back to desktop). Pull-up worked... Repeated above paragraph's procedure and pull-up is working... Random failure... Either an AP patch is failing, AVG-AV/ZA-Firewall, or... there is a problem with the setup (some setting) for the mouse (standard PS/2 Wheel). I suggest the mouse 'cuz as I write this this the "bar" (cursor position) is going "blinky-blinky" kinda slow... Will check a few more things out... (Wow! Just used the pull-down for emoticons and one did not show until I right-clicked and Show-Picture'd! Something is definitewy scwewy, Bugs!) O-tay! I repeat, hang in there; all this strangeness (strangleness?) will be sorted out... edit: As of this moment (A.M. where I am; fired up the beast) I followed the same procedure as above and no problem! I had cleared all IExplore-related caches before last shutdown as well. No apparent WinExplorer problem either (dr-hoiby; haven't re-tried "latest" again yet). I had, however, changed "Folder Options->View->Menu Speed" from "Default" to "Fast". #$%^! Ghost musta ghosted a ghost that finally went into the light... Or VPC2K4 indeed did some strange stuff that temporarily carried over (yes, I did uninstall VM-Additions/Reboot in VM before Ghost operation). Unless this becomes a permanent problem, no more on this! (Am I the only one?)
  7. Language barriers? Please don't "get your hackles up", guys! MOBO's that have both PCI and ISA slots usually have at least one (even if only one ISA slot) "shared" between the two "next to each other". In other words, (since ISA and PCI cards are "reversed") either an ISA or PCI card can be placed in that position. I have a 56K "real modem" (not WinModem) in my ISA slot (reducing the number of PCI cards I can insert by one) and it only uses the IRQ assigned to that card. In other words, the quote shown here applies (both DL's and Ponch's). Trust me/them! You are not using any resources of the ISA slot if nothing is in it. Just put a PCI card (which should be immediately next to it) in and use it; the PCI card will then use resources. Besides, I know of no way of "disabling" ISA slots... never heard of it! There is, however (in the System) usage of a very small amount of I/O space used by "ISAPNP Read Data Port" (six whole bytes in my case - woohoo!) and a "PCI to Isa Bridge" (which does not use any resources), so these are irrelevant anyway... Hope this explanation is sufficiently clear... Peace, Brothers!
  8. soporific : Oh well, back to this - Installed (as per previous post). In "Start/Settings/Taskbar and Start Menu" under "Taskbar Options" I have ticked "Always on top" and "Auto Hide". Normally, when the cursor is placed at the bottom, the Taskbar "pulls up", but for some reason whenever I use a "Maximized" Windows Explorer the Taskbar randomly refuses to "pull up" until I "Restore" down (or "Minimize") at which time it again "pulls up". Wierd, ain't it? So I am now investigating who the culprit is; or is there some new-and-improved setting I am missing? Ok, I checked after uninstall of "EXPLOR98" and all appears ok. not sure if this is the problem, but - - EXPLOR98 contains ver 4.72.3612.1700 - Win98SE contains ver 4.72.3110.1 I am aware that IE5SP1 is supposed to have the first version, but in the Install, it states the original is from http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownlo...en/IE4SHL95.CAB This is obviously IE55! Is this a mistake? Check that... same version for 4.01-SP1 thru 5.5-SP2... IE4.01 has ver 4.71.1712.6, so... WHERE in the dickens does the Win98SE version come from? Going directly to the following http://www.dr-hoiby.com/TrayIconIn256Color/ I see that the original Win98SE EXPLORER.EXE is modified. For funsies, will try that, although I don't see why it should matter... or should it? Will report back... Used the dr-hoiby fix for ver 4.72.3110.1 and I'll be hornswaggled! Problem gone! For funsies, someone else install like I did and see if you get the problem... please, please, please! FWIW, I noticed that IE4SHL95.CAB has SHELL32.DLL in it and is replaced by USHELL98... edit: Ok, this bites! Above is true IN VPC! I had "cloned" AP-PR2 (982ME "Full" on VPC) to the secondary real-HDD and rebooted to it. Gloriously, it works fine. Also, using Hoiby's Test256 (real HDD) ok, but NOT in VPC (NO 256, even when set to 640x480-256)! This is starting to look like a VPC idiosyncracy (in Ctl-Panel->Display+Settings it indicates "Default Monitor on VM Additions Trio32"). -- I may have wasted half of a post! -- I am going to test this bugger with variations 'till I figger it out 'cause NOW I'm frustrated and pixxed off about VPC. So... ignore most of this post except as an FYI and expect a "shortie" when done beating it up... edit2: DOH! RTFM ("modules.rtf')!
  9. ohmss006 : You had mentioned previously just going to XP... just giving info on the Dual-Core utilization. And my response intended that if you were to go that route, VPC would allow you to install and run Win98SE on top of XP (within VPC)... Peace, bubba... and do as Eck suggests. You will get to your goal a lot faster!
  10. NativeTexan : Per you download speeds... Get a Download Manager. There are many free available. I use FlashGet and the download on Cable is awesome! One of these proggies should allow multiple connections to the files in question, which vastly decreases download time (no matter what ISP or connection type). Per the Taskbar... don't want any extras (recipients of "freebee PC's" are 'puter illiterate). Besides, problem appeared to go away with AP May-2007 vs PR2... Per PC "slow on startups"... nature of any Active A-V and/or Firewall. Just gotta live with it or don't do stoopid things on the internet. Need these, tho, since "freebee PC's for the not-so-wise-maybe-pr0n-hunters". Have a dopey friend like that... brotha, his PC was loaded with spyware/adware/trojans! Played hexx cleaning it up! Rambling forgiven (I do it sometimes)... a bit tired-toastie were you? HTH p.s. thx for the LFV info... found the site! p.s.#2 these old PC's have, at minimum, 200mhz CPU / 64MB RAM (I think 5 of 'em). a coupla more lower-end (getting Win95OSR2.5). ole-lady threatening to throw either them or me out, so they gotta go! Hope this don't get me in trouble on MSFN: anyone want to come to my house and pick up 2 C-64's and a C-128 plus a load of software, floppy drives, meeses, joysticks (like new, no monitors)? I hate to throw them into the recycle bin! Moderators, If this is inappropriate, politely let me; if not, will repost details in Hardware section...
  11. Sophy : All good advice/assistance above. And a very good idea to do a full backup before proceeding... True... Also check to see if it was made using some kind of UDF format (unlikely though, if proprietary EasyShare). Although... most MS OS's should be able to read MultiSession if the CD-reader/burner is capable of it (most nowadays have the ability)If you get IsoBuster (my favorite; it's trial/eval) you can "scan" the CD for errors (although it won't allow fixing without registration). If it is accessible and readable, you can Extract the files on the CD to a HDD folder. Ther are other shareware/trial progs like it that can also do this. On a side note, if the CD(s) were readable on the friend's PC, then that may indicate some kind of hardware/software (MS) setup issue on yours. Also, if the CD is CD-R (not CD-RW), then there is no way the CD(S) can be "wiped" or screwed-up on the friend's PC. The "reinstall" done (under Dell's direction) may have gonk'd some Hardware settings causing "no access/unreadable" problem. HTH
  12. Good question. From what I've seen, FTL, bro! Welcome! (p.s. read the rules and adhere...)
  13. soporific : No "real work" today, so testing AP May 2007 (no SP's). Rationale of running this vs AP-PR2: for some reason, after installing AVG-Free and ZoneAlarm-Free (last Win9x version still available), I was unable to "pull up" my Auto-Hidden Taskbar until I minimized everything (under/after AP PR2). No problem with "Select All/Install" (basic Win98se+MS-Installer+VM-Addons) until (read on)... For some reason, the Taskbar setting for not having "View as Web Page" temporarily reverts to Set (after q323708?) until the next Auto-Reboot at which time it reverts back. Odd, but obviously not a problem. If you mean in "Add/Remove Programs" then "IE6SP1 Add Components" it can be Uninstalled, then yes delete, however when I tried to do this subsequent to AP May 2007 FULL Install, IE6SP1 Setup informed me that "Last Setup was not complete, so Reboot". I did (after exiting the Install Log), and Lo! I could use IE6SP1 Setup to Remove OE. Hot Doggies! One more Reboot!Which leads to IE6SP1 question/suggestion: would it be possible to alter Setup to install only essentials (undoubtedly so) and (as you had once planned) copy IE6SP1 Setup files to e.g. "C:\IE6SP1" folder instead of AP's folder making it "permanent" and bypassing it during AP Uninstall? Otherwise, those that utilize other language stuff (etc.) would have to search for a non-exixtent IE6 Install folder... Info/comment: I have thus far not actually seen any value to DotNet v1.0/1.1/2.0 except to use MSN-Messenger/get-an-account-for-MS-Evaluation-Software. But still good to have (how about the MSN Messenger to go in conjunction with this?). Will soon be testing for the "Taskbar not accessible after AVG/Zonealarm" quirk shortly... Peace, Bro! (will get latest version/s soon; this one is goodie SO FAR) edit: Silly me... also wondered if there is any reason to/not-to include Sun's Java (approx 16mb) to the Install? Sidebar: also AVG/ZoneAlarm/Viewers(Word/Excel/PowerPoint/some kinda PDF)/Ad-Aware/Spybot... some of which are very valuable. Yep, u be right to not include too much if that seems best (ref. UBCD as a vehicle). And... 7-Zip is now at v4.47 (AAAARG!). edit2: I just knew I had seen something about the Win982ME change you had made (removal) and the new (inserted) EXPLOR98! That must have been the problem with the "Taskbar not accessible" thingy, 'cause it's ok now! Could you give some details about why this change (or point me to the post; I can't find it now)? P.S.: As with any AV/FW software, it slows the 'puter down to the speed of "ol' Duke my favorite hound dawg" during start-up... WOOHOO! I think this one is good for the first "bye bye, freebee PC"!!! After that, I'm gonna work on the UBCD, by golly!
  14. BenroitRen : Just noticed this post... Is that your avatar or are you really banned? Jeez, what a flame-fest!!! Must be a language barrier... Clinton - "Depends on what your definition of "is" is"... FWIW, I, for one, wholeheartedly agree with your opinions, assessments, and definitions, etc... Win95 works fine ; to each their own. I have my own preference... Peace, bubba! Leave it alone!!! Hot pokers can put your eye out!
  15. ohmss006 : - MSFN is not known for encouraging "flame-fests", so please be nice and do not assume anyone is "going there" - With your specs, you are being encouraged to AFAIK RTFM (no offense intended; just a euphamism), i.e. look around in MSFN, to overcome problems in utilizing Win98SE on your MOBO; do so and all will be well - It is im-poss-i-ble to expect your MOBO to utilize all resources with Win98SE - trust the experts! - WinXP Home will not utilize both CPU's, only 1... go with XP-Pro, 2k3, or Vista; If you do that, then go for Virtual PC (free) running "on top of" one of the three or dual-boot... Peace, brutha!!!
  16. shadetree : Good info above ... may help plonkeroo (even though other thing may be in MSHDC.INF settings for LBA-mode drives; do a search on the subject; very little shows in "Google"...). -- Yeah, was aware of that, hence the post I had made @plonkeroo as a potential "annoyance" solution, not as a question...All MS OS's I have used/installed, etc. - Dos3.x thru Dos 6.22 - Win2.x thru WFW3.11 - WinNT3.5/4.0 - Win95 (all versions), Win98 (FE+SE), WinME - Win2k Pro/Server - WinXP Home/Pro - Win2k3 And... Most IBM Mainframe stuff up to 1999 edit: I do not consider myself an "expert"...
  17. Hey, all : Woohoo!! Bag of worms!!! Agree with both of above; but do a "google" (or search in this forum) for "Repair Install". Dumb Dell technician should have led you through that instead. I have used this method twice before (on other's PC's) and my own and it works! But... it may be too late now; can't remember if the data/files in the "Windows\Repair" folder get wiped or not. And it can get a bit complicated when you want to add you "latest" user-id's (etc) back; you can get "replicated Documents And Settings" folders/files. I know, I know; little or no help here. But hang in there... a solution must be there somewhere!
  18. plonkeroo : Agreed. Some AntiVirus software also defaults to checking the FDD (among others) for "boot viruses" (e.g. Norton/Symantec) even if there is no disk(s). This can be turned off in the associated Options (somewhere?). Also, you might want to clear in the Taskbar "Recent Documents". I don't clearly remember (since I am using VM right now), but I think stoopid Windows checks this for some reason...
  19. tech: Should be able to, no problem. Be aware that the second partition must remain the same "mounted" id eg D: as when you "moved" it every time Windows is started. If not, dunno... maybe no start.
  20. NOTS3W : Ok, that is much more clear... However you specify that MARS2 has a "shared NIC"; is this by chance the real NIC on MARS? If so, this may (or may not) cause a problem. I have not tried your setup (since I don't have the resources), but I do have a single NIC (was two) on my PC. I have Virtual PC 2004 (for testing Win98SE installs with AutoPatcher 98SE) and use the following setup: -Add two Loopback Adapters on physical PC; -- one (ICS) is pointed to by the real NIC (i.e. set for Internet Connection Sharing) ------- (note: real NIC is set to automatic so ISP can assign it) ------- on real PC, manually set IP 192.168.0.1, subnet 255.255.255.0, Gateway (empty) ------- on Virt PC, "obtain IP automatically" (VPC assigned; 192.168.0.x, subnet 255.255.255.0, Gateway 192.168.0.1) -- other (LCL) is a stand-alone for sharing between physical PC and VPC ------- on real PC, manually set IP 192.168.2.2, subnet 255.255.255.0, Gateway (empty) ------- on Virt PC, manually set IP 192.168.2.3, subnet 255.255.255.0, Gateway (empty) On Virt PC (under Settings) I assign the Loopbacks, not the real NIC. VPC uses Intel DC21140 as the NIC anyhow (in case you didn't notice under MARS2 while running). I also assume you have the router set up so that MARS and VENUS have the designated IP's assigned(?). "NET SHARE" is apparently a Win2k/XP (and above?) parameter and not available in Win9x, but the result is the same when a specific folder is Shared on either/both on my setup. Perhaps there is some sort of conflict if you have assigned the real NIC on MARS to MARS2 (via Settings) and you should maybe be using Loopback Adapters ("Virtual" adapters on the physical PC). Try using one (at least) and see if that works. Also, yep, no USB's. And more than likely you should have no problem for an Unattanded CD Install on any of the PC's (real or virtual) since I believe (based upon the model PC's) that the hardware will be "found" during install in any case. I'm not an expert, just trying to help. This works for me (using a common Network Logon), so let me know how it goes...
  21. NOTS3W : Physical computers? Virtual PC's? Which is which? Please be more precise as to the setup. It is possible to share between both Physical and Virtual, depending on what you have as far as "real" and "virtual" NIC's. It just requires a little "finesse" to get them talking. Firewall and User Priveledges also come into play.
  22. soporific : I just knew you could get it squared away! Congratulations . But, dang it now I have to wait... Oh well; never rush the cook, eh? ("Earned" my star and am now a Junior! have a decent signature now and will scan the JusTus back-drop and add it soon...)
  23. pkmusic : FWIW: Windows 98 SE Service Pack 2.0 beta 3: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=37455 These are the newest versions as far as I know: msvcirt.dll = from WinME, installed by 98SE2ME [you can tell by the date/time stamp] msvcrt.dll = from Win2000 SP4, installed by Gape's Win98SE SP 1.6.2 [for some reason Gape removed it from SP 2.0 betas ] rpcltccm.dll = from + installed by MS DCOM98 + by Gape's Win98SE SP 1.6.2 + 2.0 beta 2 + 3 [you can tell by the date/time stamp] Your application install may not like these newer versions. Mine are all ver 6.0.8972.0 dated 2/17/2004 from Unofficial VS6SP6 installed via Autopatcher from http://www.mdgx.com/files/VS6SP6U.EXE Is the application compatible with Win98SE/ME? Nonetheless, try what eidenk suggests.
  24. MDGx : What am I doing wrong? The ".CHM" (help file) does not download correctly, i.e. it comes up as an HTML. Even if I use "view source"/"save as:" it is still bad. Is this due to the conversion from HTML (at MaxSpeed site) to CHM format? @steamshooter: I would recommend burning the whole "OPTIONS" folder just so you won't have to reload again. And since this is not my Topic, I'm sure MDGx will eventually answer your primary question.
  25. don't know about move/redirect BUT, to my knowledge as follows - dllcache: I think, in Safe Mode, delete contents only, not the folder itself. It will be rebuilt as necessary. - $hf_mig$: not recommended, these are your updates - Installer: not recommended, this is what is installed and is needed for uninstalls/optionals/etc. If you have a lot of unnecessary applications installed, Uninstall them. - printer drivers folder: If you know which printers are actually being used, you could delete excess IF you know what you are doing. Server 2k3? You must have it on an extremely small HDD to have the need to get rid of stuff. You would be better off "cloning" it to a larger HDD if possible. 2k3 uses a lot of space anyway. I have experienced 8gb on a 10gb partition with just the minimum to run a server (IIS, CD-burning, Firewall, A-V, MS-Word, the 2k3 Install, etc). It's not unlike WinXP Pro...
