  1. An addendum - install VirtualPC (free from MS), install it, then install your 98SE in a Virtual Environment (with networking) then go to the above-mentioned website (in case you don't have your 98SE already installed somewhere).
  2. re: DIAMOND.EXE Do a google on "cabdevkt.exe" (with the "quotes"). It contains DIAMOND.EXE dated "02/14/1996". Also go here and look around... edit: and Cabpack has a GUI to use with "makecab" and includes MSZip Format as an option. Have to play with it a little to get the results you want... HTH
  3. YUCK! Remnants of a virus/trojan/downloader! You have more problems...A Repair/reinstall does not clear bad stuff from the registry or eliminate "fake module names", it only "replaces" what is installed from scratch (clean install). Suggest trying to download MalwareBytes and Spybot S&d, install, and run them. You may have to do this in Safe Mode With Networking. Get the updates during/after install. Other alternative is to back up anything you want to keep (pictures, etc), get all software that you want reinstalled (including keys), wipe the XP, clean install, reinstall all additional software, then virus-scan your backups (for insurance).
  4. First, you may integrate the SP3 without integrating previous SP's via nLite. You do not need to have SP1 first as this is an "integrated" method. SP1 is only needed if you are tryng to install directly onto a running SP0 (i.e. RTM - no SP's). Installation will include the SP3. Second, if you look at the very first nLite "stickies' (topics in the sub-forum), you'll find SATA driver packs that can be integrated as well, so no SATA problems during install. Integrate just those, try a "test install", and then help will be given on "where to go" from there (other hotfixes, updates/upgrades/etc). Tip - use CD-RW instead of CD-R so you can "reuse" them Just "erase" before reuse - many free tools to do this if you don't have any. (DOH! I guess I meant DVD-RW, reviewing your post...) Trust MSFN and use the "search" function for any other questions. Nearly every "problem" encountered in XP (and solutions) has been addressed somewhere here. Links (click-on-me's) will be given as appropriate/necessary to preclude repetitions. BTW, welcome, Sir Vet, and honors to you! You will, indeed be assisted with patience. (Vietnam-era vet here...) p.s. use "full editor" to attach anything if necessary. Online Post "Help" is also available. Put yer glasses on and read a little. Forgot to mention - just go to MS website search "Service Pack 3" and make sure you download the FULL package here (click me).
  5. A wee bit late for posting, but... @HardDriv'n - It's possible (provided you understand the BAT files) to combine the EBD method with the CD Boot method for RamDrive. Search MSFN for more alternatives to Ramdrive.sys as well (better freeware methods). One place to look is the "more than 1gb memory"(?) thread. Also, the EBD.CAB can be "re-cabbed" with only the programs you actually want and then extracted to the created RamDrive thus saving space in the IMG file. @hottext - re-read the first post. The Boot is Pure DOS-mode and not Win32-98SE, so DOS-mode USB drivers are necessary (as has already been incorporated). :;
  6. FWIW, I have a neighbor's "Acer Aspire One" Netbook/Notebook sitting here (XP Home SP3). Amazingly, it has a PE2.x (?) WIM restore set in the Recover Partition. Basic Info - F2 for BIOS ALT+F10 for Recovery (label="PQSERVICE") with BIOS=D2D Recovery Enabled Hidden Partition Type=12 (originally) Changed to Type =07 (NTFS) to access it (out of sheer curiosity) Appears to have x86+x86 WIM in WINRE folder and SWM in FACTORY folder (for dual-recover "depending on") It appears that the Recovery Key Sequence simply "boots" to the Recovery Partition (via BIOS and NOT the MBR in this case? unsure BUT MBR doesn't seem to have anything out-of-the-ordinary - looks like Vista&up MBR/PBR...). Possibly just changing the "Active Partition" flag would allow for the BOOTMGR (in your recovery partition) to "take over"? I might suggest you change the Partition Type back before you proceed (in case Recover gets "silly"). BTW PTEDIT (partition table editor) can be obtained from Symantec "for free" (google "Starman" + "PTEDIT" and/or "PTEDIT32") as opposed to using Hixxn and just go for UBCD/BartBE/WinPE/LiveXP instead (now you're legal ) edit - Ummm, forgot to mention - BACKUPS FIRST (somehow) of your DATA. Recovery usually involves a "wipe" of the "normal" partition for recovery purposes.
  7. Mot sure about that... They use MS Silverlight.
  8. DOH! Would this happen to be related to the Copy2GB "Unofficial 2-4 GB Files Errors KERNEL32.DLL Fix" error? (never thought about it before; will check this.) edit1 - nope, tried on a relatively "clean" install edit2 (registry info for "posterity") - http://www.viathinksoft.de/svn/delphiutils/trunk/Recycle%20Bin%20Unit/PurgeInfo%20Interpretation%20Theorety.txt http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,1160968,00.asp another "hint" http://support.microsoft.com/kb/128794/

    Setup Xp SP3

Um, maybe this will help to "un-confuse" you - More to it than meets the eye... Just "copying" that item won't allow "booting".
  10. Would "tracert" command help?
  11. Sidebar interjection (for a little background - yeah, it's Wiki!) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paging IOW, many variations of page file methods (looks like dencorso "shares" the "space" between his multiboots).
  12. FWIW/AFAIK/AFAICR, the way it "works" for you is the ONLY way. The DHCP server (and/or the one connected to the WWW) has to be up-and running first BEFORE the connected (Clients) can access other resources. Always been that way since NT3.x and WFW 3.x. I always -1-Turn on my Modem -2-"Boot" my Router -3-Boot other PC's connected _OR (no Router) -1-Turn on my Modem -2-"Boot" my ICS PC (having two-plus NIC's) -3-Boot Other PC(s).
  13. ?Does it allow "resizing it" in the properties? edit - just some more info - http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_qr.htm and do a "find" on "recyc" - read a few paragraphs. edit2 - more info (refers to NT but applies) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/171694/en-us edit3 - Well! Found this - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/187188 In addition, "booted" a "Compaq Restore" of 98SE (in VirtualPC) and LO! Recycle Bin reports 1.99gb for C-drive BUT in Explorer it's really 12gb. This "bug" must be some kind of carry-over.
  14. FWIW, Silverlight is/was used by Netflix for streaming movies. At least it did when my brother got his "free trial of Netflix"...
  15. Yes and no. Some of these Idi-err I mean OEM's actually allow a backup of User Data to the Recovery Partition, the "idea" being that a Restore will also allow Recover of your own personal "backed up" data. They even have a "selection" to do it! The wise thing would be to NOT use this function and use another User Data Backup method.
  16. ? GParted Live CD (works on x86 machines only). Not having an x64 PC, I might assume (perhaps incorrectly) that there may be a BIOS Mode setting that would allow it for your purpose. (GParted is free).
  17. Will this help? http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/view/web/48/ Explains integrating Service Packs, HotFixes, and putting them into an XP Install.
  18. Any MS-Office Program (Word, Excel, etc.) - Help->About Will show service pack level. Can't answer about using an add-on... (don't use them).
  19. Apparently HP didn't write drivers for pre-Win2k (dropped support for newer printers on older OpSys).
  20. Curiosity - using IE6 or FF? Tried both/either of latest "useable on 98SE"? I don't play the "games" but maybe... (Uh... Facebook WANTS you to use FF browser - I use it under XP).
  21. You mean what's left AFTER their Mom/Dad (your kids) get into them...@jaclaz - Washers? Sounds like me (I do autobody repair). P.S. - do NOT carry a tube of krazy glue in them... @PC_LOAD_LETTER - I note 2 quarters and a dime as well - also sound like me...
  22. More info here - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897418.aspx which leads to here - http://blogs.technet.com/b/markrussinovich/archive/2009/11/03/3291024.aspx If they're OEM machines, more than likely the internal Product Key is "common" and the stickers are for licensing the OS to the given PC. SysPrep procedure...
  23. FWIW, the SP3.EXE is on/in the ISO. "Mount" it using any CD-ROM Emulator or "Open" it using any ISO-editing software.
  24. 1) Failed Update; look at the contents of the folder to find out which (may have installed subsequently). This can happen if the PC is shut down during Auto-Update (by turning power off). 2) From CMD Prompt, using "xxxx.exe /?" (where xxxx is a KB number/hotfix file name); the file will extract but not install, giving instead the command-line options. 3) Updates are in progress (Auto Update); the folders SHOULD disappear once all Updates are installed.
  25. R2 has additional "goodies" (e.g. ADAM) and uses a different type of key to allow them to install. This is somewhat similar to the XP vs Media/Tablet PC where the CD1 is the "standard" and CD2 is the "additional" (installed by using the appropriate "not-standard" key). Admittedly, this is a rather "loose" explanation. You need the R2 Product Key to get the additional "goodies", otherwise the CD1 is just a vanilla 2K3-SP2. No such thing as "slipstreaming R2", as it's the CD2 contents. To prove this (I already did), just slipstream the SP2 into the 2K3 and then compare the results against the R2-CD1 contents; very few differences (those "special files" and certain expanded/replaced files). In my case, I just got the CD1 from MS and swapped in the "special files" (my "flavor")from my original to have a "pre-slipped" SP2. I have no need for the CD2 "goodies" (even though I have that "special R2 key") so I don't use it. HTH edit - Oops - meant SP1 integrated (see next post); there is also an SP2 I believe...
