cannot connect to LAN & internet
submix8c replied to Kiki Burgh's topic in Networks and the Internet
Sounds reasonable to me... never even occurred to me. It's a NIC/OS solution (maybe I misunderstood Tripedacus' post; yours clarified). IOW, all PC's have the same NIC MAC (as modified in Locally Administered Address). -
On that note... (haven't tried this) maybe the Win95 (latest) ones will work(?). Again, some from SE will work, some will not. I have an FE CD here, but don't use it (SE instead). You may want to update it with all of the (known) patches before trying for remaining drivers. FWIW, check your CD in the "drivers" folder. ARGH! "Modern motherboards that..." topic; this is a "fairly recent" MoBo ("as compared to" - just checked the Specs) - could present some problems. Trial-and-error may be the way to go, as not many folks here work with FE... First thing you'll want (natch) are the Intel Chipset Drivers. So, doubting (many/most of) the 95-specific ones will work. HTH, and happy reloading/testing! (second-best assist may be rloew)

cannot connect to LAN & internet
submix8c replied to Kiki Burgh's topic in Networks and the Internet
? Can you "clone" the MAC in the Surfboard (mine is obviously older, as noted in the URL)? I can "clone" the MAC in my router to a "fixed" one, but that's irrelevant when always using the router's MAC address ("learned" in the SB, one and only one). Pressing the button on top doesn't reset, that's a "standby". In the URL, there's a place to "reset on-the-fly" (same as pushing a paperclip in the "hole" in the back). AFAIK, unplugging the SB and plugging in back in resets it; the LED's will cycle though self-test, etc. BTW, mine appears to allow for 3 "learned"; switching between more is where I "got got" and had to reset it (then got a router - problem solved). The ISP's control "what you get" in the Modem. It also has a MAC, on record at the ISP. I haven't a clue what their "process" is if you use your own (they may not allow it; never tried it). A sure-cure (nearly) is to get a dependable (and inexpensive) router (mine is "old"). Be aware that some ISP's (mine is RR) won't support problems Modem->Router->PC's unless you acquire it from them (Who cares? You have MSFN). (bets are, your Modem was supplied by your ISP; Motorola usually has the manual available; and ISP's alter the Firmware to disallow any modifications, other than Reset) -
Above is true (I have a no-ip "free domain name" yada-yada.no-ip.xxx). You need the DUX running on the dynamic-ip-Server. Also, don't forget about any "blockages" in your server's Firewall and/or your Router (have to Port Forward in the Router with a Fixed IP to my server). The DUX updates (at no-ip) my dynamic-IP (assigned by the ISP) adn in the router I port-forward (80) to the Fixed IP. Still battling with this stupid Symantec Firewall; ready to use built-in methods and toss it... Although when "stealth" is off it seems to work, and depends on my Rules instead (just like a "normal firewall"). Can't elaborate more than that. Your scenario is a "domain name" via "godaddy", so I can't say how the IP works with that (is it the same deal as "free domain" as is in mine and simply "points" to your server? No Clue!). I got mine (as I example'd) from No-IP (just a "pointer").

WD - PCB replacement + pictures
submix8c replied to CrazyDoctor's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
No ya don't! "HDD? We don' need no steenking HDD!" Funny how "old folks" (and 'puters) need very little memory to accomplish a basic task. (ought to split part of this off to the Funny Farm - "In My Day..." ) -
dencorso is AFAIK correct. Remember, FE is (in extremely loose jargon) an "upgrade" of 95OSR2, hence the poor WDM support. VxD's will more than likely work. The WDM versions are usually better for 98SE and ME (but maybe not always; might depend on the age of the hardware?). Some 98SE drivers will work on ME (but again, not always). My experience only. Don't take my word for it, try it yourself. Worst case is a reload. (have an old Optiplex GX1 sitting here not-running... sheesh!) (just a post to back up dencorso )

Much bigger than VHS, much slower than 50Hz, and very little core. (our age is showing ) -
Try the "Network Setup Wizard" and follow instructions... works every time!

cannot connect to LAN & internet
submix8c replied to Kiki Burgh's topic in Networks and the Internet
On one of the PC's that have connectivity, enter "http://192.168.100.1/address.html". On mine, it has a limit of 3 "learned" MAC addresses. See if the MAX=3 has been reached. You can try sticking a wire in the "reset hole" in the back or unplug about 10-min then replug (if that's the case). Seems that as long as it's not "reset" and it "stores" the MAC's to the MAX=3-different (at least on mine), it will not "communicate". Same thing happened to me once switching between different PC's. Worth a shot, HTH -

Ghosting XP on different hardware without having errors
submix8c replied to gendouhydeist's topic in Windows XP
Much like a DriverPack would do. The intent (I seen this yesterday) is as stated in the previous post. If your personal intent is to simply Ghost your own single-PC installation, just set it up the way you want it and set up a "reload" image on DVD(s) using a bootable Ghost restore (plenty of info on that here on MSFN). -

You usually have to disconnect one (or more) solder points to use a multimeter for any given component to get correct readings. Even so, some components can't be measured with such a simple device (e.g. transistor); you would possibly need an O-scope and even that may not do. I was in the USN and to repair the Fire Control Console sometimes it required simply swapping complete PCB's to isolate the failures. I think the "0-ohm" may be slightly incorrect. That would be a complete "short", so it must be somewhere above 0-ohm and below 1-ohm (a fraction). Resistors have a color-striping-combination that is used to cross-reference to a chart for exact values. Many/most other components have a "marking" on them corresponding to the type of component to get the "value". I still recommend taking the smarter way of replacing the whole PCB, as it was stated above that other components could be bad and IMHO it would become extremely difficult (see first paragraph) to check each and every component. Again, trust me... I know! -
Answer (re: the "date discrepancy) - IE4.01 SP1 SP2 is the first release. All that followed are exactly the same except the external date. The "modification" in NUSB could have come from any of them and the only difference is as was already stated. Just to give you some more confusion (if you really want to be confused) is that the IE5 supplied with OfficeXP (2002) Publisher is exactly the same. Don't worry about it. It's part of the "shell integration" (in IE4SHL95.CAB) for Windows 95 (all the way up to IE5.5 SP2). HTH edit - correction above (SP1 was in Win95 OSR2.5 by some OEM's and in Win98FE/SE; at least the EXPLORER.EXE 4.72.3110.1)

1 - This is an old topic2 - This topic is XP-x64, not Windows-7

For the record... Best Virtualisation Software (more info, same software) edit- DOH! same link as jaclaz!!!! edit2 - ...And DOS/Win3.x, when installing the appropriate drivers, functions fine for the hardware in question (9x and up usually have them). May have to dig for them...

Yes (and read the prev post for more info on an option). Like I said, try at risk (never actually tried it myself).

Not using Outlook but... Downloaded the package, 7-unzipped it, and used "InstEd It!" to make the change. Everything "appears" to be ok, but (again the "but")... Try it and see if it works (Google on the application I mention). At your own risk, naturally. (Note: InstEd It! only works on Win2k and above, so...) (Note2: change "Tools->Options->Save Options" to "Don't Change")

...kind of like the difference between USB1.1 and USB2.0; USB2.0 device in a USB1.1 will "run" slower and USB1.1 device may/will not "run" any faster. The "support" should be built into the Add-On Card itself and is useful only for those devices that support it.

Well, I wasn't "putting anyone down". The "good luck with that" really meant "jeez, those are small parts!" and yes, I should know (being an E.T. Extra-Terrestrial from Terra and all) it can get frustrating. In addition, if they are so toasty you can't read the values, well you'll need schematics; so it would be much easier to get a complete PCB. Lots of fun right there... -
TP-Link Router not giving the speed
submix8c replied to morland's topic in Networks and the Internet
Depends on the FSB/CPU/RAM/GPU/WiFi speeds as well. These bottlenecks may slow it down. Your friend's laptop faster in one or more of the preceding? Just a faster Router won't make a faster connection for the same reason putting a 100mbs NIC in place of a 10mbs NIC in a P-133 won't make much difference. Note it also depends on the Site you are connecting to and Hops; slow site, slow connection. What's your test scenario (how did you get the numbers)? More knowledgeable folks I'm sure can give a better/more accurate explanation. -

submix8c replied to CrazyDoctor's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
re - your other "cross-post"... I doubt you'll be able to replace just the "burnt components" as 1 - you need to know specifically what they are (and yours are FUBAR!) 2 - you would need to find a supplier after you KNOW (good luck finding them) 3 - you would have to de-solder/re-solder (good luck with that) If you have valuable data on that HDD, you'll probably have to either - 1 - follow jaclaz' advice (get the exact PCB replacement) 2 - send it to a "recovery" and/or "repair" company Other than that, there's no other (known) solution (trust me, I'm a Certified Electronics Technician) sans "Magic Wand". HTH edit (from "wdc.com") - So, unless data, just buy another. If data, get the correct PCB and carefully "swap" it. -
What's the correct time-offset (GMT - X) for Eastern Time Zone?
submix8c replied to a topic in Networks and the Internet
World Time The offset is "fixed" except when Daylite Time is applied (Spring Forward/Fall Back 1 hr). If you "undo" "Adjust for DST" and/or set your Time Zone to GMT and Synch yourself (e.g. "time.windows.com") you'll see something interesting... Also note that pre-XP does not have an actual "official" DST "fix", but there is a thread (somewhere) pointing to "unofficial" fixes (maybe in the 9x "stickies"). Does this help? -
FWIW, as PROBLEMCHYLD stated, you can delete these (as he listed) in DOS mode (F8/Command Prompt Only). Deleteing the SWP file in DOS effectively "zeros" it as it's rebuilt upon reboot (unlike NT-type systems). Also, I use a combination of CCleaner and "INDEX.DAT Analyzer" (both freeware) to clear/delete IE-stuff and emptying the contents of the IE-DAT files. Don't know where the "C:\WINDOWS\UserData" came from. Maybe a non-MS software? Maybe Malware downloaded? No clue... (unless you "moved" or "copied" some folders) edit - Huh!!! (see LoneCrusader post below) I have this on my "Production 98SE" and it has a couple of XML's (in sub-folders) relating to Windows Update (with IE6 + "unofficial updates" and all other updates official/unofficial, including the latest/last XML). If you really are concerned with them (1kb size?) just "move" them elsewhere and go into IE6 and/or WU and see if they get re-created. Chances are they mean nothing at all (and could have something to do with the aforementioned "fixes")...
