I was pretty in a hurry and should rather have asked you for your winnt.sif. Lastsession_u.ini is relevant but winnt.sif is even more. (I will see in 20hours or so in fact)
-
And if you were reffering to me, I meant it was really uncredible a new stable release of HFSlip could be released each month with new updates from MS each month. Btw, I don't often say thanks, I try to help other back.

CopyTo and MoveTo commands missing in RC1.0 Final
Camarade_Tux replied to TomParker's topic in nLite
Afaik these tweaks are buggy. Not because of nlite in fact, they're simply buggy. I think they have been removed on purpose. -
A few months ago, I used OrbitDock with .Net framework2 but it was for framework 1.1 and wouldn't start. I found Orbit's proper config file, changed the "required version" key and had absolutely no problem with this soft.

Time lag. Could you attach your lastsession_u.ini ? (don't forget to remove any sensitive information) PS: I won't see a computer again until monday.
-
Sure! You can remove pinball and paint. You will save 300 Kb. LOL I take your own example : Pinball is approx. 9MB, 30 times what you estimated.

I think I should stop HFSlip. Yesterday was Wednesday and on each first wednesday of the month, there is an alarm test in France. At first I thought, "ho, first wednesday of the month", immediately after I thought "hey, 7 days before patch day"! I'm really too dangerous. And it's really uncredible there is final versions of HFSlip with new patchs every month. @Kiki Burgh, still wonder how they managed.

Some files will be replaced by service packs. So you may try to copy your CD to the hard drive, then use /integrate to integrate a service pack (look here for the "manual" way). Btw, do you know which files are corrupted/impossible to copy ?

To me XP is higly modular. Just look at nlite and at how we can restore some components. To restore a component, you need to find the proper inf, copy all needed files to your hard drive, install the inf. That's all and that's probably how windows installs itself. Pretty modular isn't it ? As for the modularity, windows is probably compiled so it runs with shared libraries. Main drawback for shared libraries is with versions : if I dynamically link to a lib and the version on the target-computer does not offer the thing I want my program will not run. If you used *nux you probably know there are tens different version of a single library unlike under Windows. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linker#Dynamic_linking and this from an older rev of the article : http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=...17199#Criticism ( I think I'll have to correct this page : "If an error in a library function is corrected by replacing the library, all programs using it dynamically will immediately benefit from the correction. Programs that included this function by static linking would have to be re-linked first. ", this is clear propaganda for shared linking) (there is also this link but it is not so interesting in the end : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shared_Library#Shared_library ) Sharing libs is good under windows because if the needed dll is present, it also has the correct version. So using it will reduce memory usage without the stability cost. Not yet, but I'm not bashing it either, at least, not yet. I'll try to see Vista beta2 and find why it is so huge. Btw, it is maybe ultimate edition but beta2 is not feature complete yet.

Thanks to a problem with an AutoHotKey script I think I found some explanations. The FF FE sequence is used to determine the endianness of the file. It is a BOM. If you read wikipedia's articles you know endianness is hardware-dependent. Now, do you think Notepad, Notepad2... could run on something else than little-endian machines such as Intel's processors ? So there is no need to bother with "FF FE", it will always be little-endian. Then, Notepad++ is based on ScinTilla, and ScinTilla can run on win32 and machines that support GTK+. So it can include big-endian machines. Thus, it needs this FF FE string. If you try to open a unicode text file created on a machine with a SPARC processor (SunOS) with Notepad/Notepad2, you will probably have troubles reading it.

Even though I couldn't lead the test I wanted to do (to enable this with TweakUI after install) I also think this a windows bug. In SP1 release notes, in the issue category: I assume this has been fixed with SP2. However this is not the bug we're talking about. (this one is there is NO password needed)
-
that could be a problem than could it be unziped dueing the install is the catch point i think Both compression schemes he's talking about are CAB compression.@Camarade tux, don't you mean LZX though? LZX indeed, typo. Edited my previous post.

Size maybe ? XP without SP is around 550MB. Also, there should be no $OEM$ folder at the root of the CD. Afaik there should be no winnt.sif file in the i386 folder in a MS CD. If you have an OEM CD (customized by a manufacturer) it can be used with nlite but it's better to clean customization from it. If you wonder how to clean it, just ask.

VLC keeps his decoding libs. Windows doesn't know they are present on the system so it won't use them. Do you have a "black" rectangle where the preview should be ?

My scanner fell from my chair and is half-living
Camarade_Tux replied to Camarade_Tux's topic in Hardware Hangout
Even worse : I think it cant be fixed. I was able to move the moving part and there is indeed a piece of plastic. The "normal" gap between this moving part and the piece of plastic is probably 0.5mm. Let's buy a new one. $$ -
Could nlite recompress with LZX all files that are compressed as MSZIP ? Also, there is a lot of things with file associations and query.dll in the registry. It seems query.dll is part of Indexer Service. Could you investigate this a bit ? edit : wrote LMZX instead of LZX.

Foobar is the best encoder I've ever seen! Of course, not on its own but it is the best because you can convert fast any format. I would really lack diskwriter. Also, you should check HA.org, there is a bunch of threads explaining why foobar's memory and CPU usage can be very high and how to solve this. And foobar's search function is really not CPU-hungry : a friend of mine with a really, really slow computer uses it without problem.

My scanner fell from my chair and is half-living
Camarade_Tux replied to Camarade_Tux's topic in Hardware Hangout
Zxian, there's nothing in the way. And in fact, I just realized there was probably no way to open it. You're right, nothing to loose. :/ New scanner are not that expensive but 60€ would have made a nice present. Also, I just plugged it again and the it moved a bit. I just checked it and it is likely there is a plastic thing, hidden by the scanning part, on the way and then, the rail could well be bent. If it is bent, I guess there is no way to fix it ? -
With nlite I learned something : Windows is a distribution just like linux distros. It has a kernel (currently NT kernel) and apps. Unlike *nix distros you can not decide (exactly) what to install. Of course, you have optionnal components but among the softwares that come with Windows the vast majority installs anyway (WMP, IE, OE). NT kernel is really nice and is far from being heavy imho. Additional softwares are different : they are made to be seen and come with lots of graphics, themes (WMP is particularly registry-hungry on this side), sounds (remember the first logon music, welcome/shutdown sounds, music samples that come with WMP...). Btw, my WinSxS folder is 7 or 8MB on XP SP1a without .Net Framework. Drivers may also take a lot of space. An possibility would be not to copy all drivers to hard drive but only the most likely to be used after installation. If you buy a new USB-mouse, you want it to work immediately. Now, imagine you install a new graphic card and don't want to bother finding the latest drivers; shutdown, open case, unplug old card, plug new card, reboot. Is it so annoying to have windows ask for a CD ? It took you 10 minutes to install the card, you can search your CD during 20seconds. Moreover, it is likely to search the drivers on the internet on its own. No need to have all drivers (especially graphic cards, chipset, audio)stored on the computer.

Btw, DBLINXP.EXT is working like a charm.
-
If you need a solution quickly, you'll have to use HFSlip. Take a look at this page : http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=62177 (among *many* others) I think nlite doesn't support this yet because otherwise last patch tuesday would have required another beta/release candidate. And everyone has been a junior. Moreover a junior may know more than an "MSFN Addict" on some points and his opinion or (fresh) ideas are also interesting.

Mostly depends of your definition of hotfix I think. Mine is approximately "a schtroumpf that schtroumpfs a flaw". Btw, there is no flaw if you install Flash Player 8/9.
-
Afaik the Flash thing is a hotfix, and XP comes with Flash5. (something to remove ? )

Disable: Use common tasks in folders / Use Windows classic folder
Camarade_Tux replied to Tonik's topic in nLite
Mine to disable is : Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects\WebView] "DefaultValue"=dword:00000000 Imported at T-12 with cmdlines.txt. -
There is a Help and Support service indeed. It's possible you disabled it with nlite. Btw a little story : on a non-nlited computer, I used to set this service start mode as Disabled. However, each time I (accidentaly) pressed F1 key it got set back to automatic. :wacko : edit : /me is stupid : nlite modifications on services are listed in your lastsesson.ini! >< And it seems this service start mode can not be modified by nlite. Please open setuperr.log (use the "Run..." box, just type setuperr.log and press enter). Is it blank ? Also, have a look at eventvwr (same as setuperr.log, use the run box); is there an event corresponding to your problem (date or meaning) ?
