  1. I didn't read the caption just looked at the icon. Opps. I tried changing the main icon under All Programs and it didn't affect that icon at all so I'm not too sure. That is a new one to me.
  2. Check out the reg key on KeepAliveTime first that may help. I dunno. http://www.askmarvin.ca/os/tcpxp.htm Or you could try the command: nbtstat -R This will reload the Netbios over TCP/IP cache. Type it alone to see other options. I am not sure if that switch will work though it may only have to do with WINS. It would work though if you first set your "servers" in an LMHOST file with #PRE entries. More on that command here: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documen...us/nbtstat.mspx Also in the past IPX-SPX has done a good job for me peer-to-peer networking with decent browsing. Netbeui does this OK too but won't pass through the router. Netbios over TCP/IP doesn't create the same traffic that Netbeui and IPX-SPX do though. It could still take up to a 1/2 hour I think for all machines to update even with IPX-SPX I think depending on how large the network is and the timing of things. I sure someone will correct me if any of the info I gave you is flawed it's been a long time since I've dealt with a 15-user peer to peer. That is pushing the limits of it working smoothly. Each computer has to communicate with the others to pass all this sort of information it takes time otherwise your network would be flooded with broadcasts half the time. A server is the next step that I would recommend. I know that is in a perfect world though. A LMHOST file is your best bet.
  3. Try this. Right-click on Start --> Properties. Then click the Customize button. There is an option for Show on Start menu on the General tab for which email program to display. Change it to Outlook. That should do it.

  5. Have you reloaded Service Pack 2 as well. For some reason I remember that starting after that update.
  6. You purchase a second internet connection and pipe them together with a dual lan card I believe.
  7. I can just switch the config file to go back out to the Internet out but I haven't had a need in a while. On my laptop I just download the exe updates when I need them. I just did a direct LiveUpdate for the first time in at least 5 months and saw nothing but a definition file update. I didn't err on the conservative side when selecting the programs to get downloads for. Plus when the share is down if the config file isn't switched updates stop. No redownloading. No manual LiveUpdate. What updates are not and redownloading??? Is this a known problem? Do you have a link on this? Sorry to be a pain but I just want to make sure now that other users configured differently than me might have problems. Firewall users & whatnot... This place has a site license & a bunch of laptops.
  8. How do you plan on updating then anyway? With a downloaded .exe files? What liveupdate file would you look for? How do you plan on replictating the detect functions for different verisons of the AV, LiveUpdate, other products & whatnot? Just curious, I would like to use a better way that doesn't redownload updates on the server as well. Symantec told me for a network with 100 users to just connect to the internet and stagger the download times. They told me LUA is meant for larger networks... but I have used it with no problems for almost 2 years now.
  9. I have to download around 200 megs through the LUA to get all of my needed updates. I haven't had the problem you spoke of. I am running LUA with the Corporate Edition 8 and haven't noticed any "extra" updates. Dunno maybe I just haven't checked recently...

Did you check the font size like I suggested also? On my computer that seems to cause what you are describing. (Large minimize & exit buttons) Do the words in your title bar seems bigger too? Try this... Display Properties-->Appearence-->Font size = Normal.
  11. You may want to do it that way but LiveUpdate files can be downloaded from a share. Get the LiveUpdate Administration Utility. You may have a need for using a web server but it is simpler to do this through a share. First you have to overwrite a .dll on each pc and add a config file to each pc that tells liveupdate where to point. There are readmes with the utility. Hope that helps.
  12. What if you just turn off the associations inside of WinRAR? It should default back to the last thing.
  13. Try this: Right-click on My Computer and left-click properties. Click on the Hardware tab and click on Device Manager. There should be a yellow explamation point next to the bad sound driver. Right-click on that and click on Properties. Click on the Driver tab and click the Update Driver button. No to Windows Update. Select Install from a specific location and then find the driver on the Motherboard disk. It may automatically recognize the old working driver as an option but to be safe you could point to the disk. That should work. No need to uninstall.

I thought of telling you to check that the Large Icon options were disabled I just don't think changing the DPI would effect that. Plus the way you desciribed it there with the Minizmize & Exit buttons large I doubt that is it. Try checking under Display Properties --> Appearence is the Font size set to Normal? It shouldn't be Large or Extra Large that is the closest thing that does what you are describing that I can tell. That Icon cache thing sounds promising too though. Otherwise I don't know...
  15. A DOS pc connecting to Win95? Haha woah... You using TCP/IP or NETBEUI? You need the MS DOS Client 3.0. The NETBEUI setup is easy the TCP/IP a bit more complex. Your best bet is to search for a TCP/IP boot disk on Google and try to configure the DOS machine like the disk. Once your DOS machine is on the Internet? (if that is your intention) what then? There aren't many WWW Browers for DOS... hehe You are better off loading Linux without X-Windows and using it on that PC (486).
  16. haha my time service wasn't working when you started posting so I went through somethings to get it working again. Mostly my problem was I reenabled the service and it didn't start until I rebooted which I rarely do these days... Anyway enjoy the day...
  17. I would suggest a lot of beer & pizza while you get a few poeple to help you run from computer to computer... haha 4 or 5 people, 400 computers, if you do more than one at a time... 2 or 3 days is my guess... You'll have to install as you remove it as well to avoid having no protection... You could send out an email to your users... And have them run the Add/Remove and just do them by department... shudder...
  18. Haven't you diabled the firewall and tried it yet? Hardware firewalls will block many service ports. I do not know what port to open.
  19. If you don't want to use your stereo buy computer speakers with a power plug and external volume control. Otherwise use crappy software solutions...
  20. Can you Add/Remove components running setup from the cd?
  21. I've attached my .reg file for the Windows Time service. My Windows is installed on D:. You will have to edit the DLLName Keys which appear twice. Change D to C and if your Windows directory is not Windows fix that too. Make sure you backup your existing key in case there is a locality problem and you to switch back. If you need more specific instructions let me know. WindowsTimeRegKeys.reg
  22. Not only that but if you uninstall as part on an upgrade you can get into hot water as well. They really only recommend Add/Remove for Norton Anti-virus 2004 but Symantec Anti-virus Corporate Editons can be completely manually uninstalled. It's very annoying. The main reason I use other AV programs now in some cases. I still stand behind the Corporate Editions.
  23. Try doing a manual Windows Update http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and find drivers in the left pane and try and find them there. You might have to go to the manufactuers web site or you might have to search Google. Right-click My Computer and left-click properties. Go to Hardware and then Device Manager. Under Display Adapters you will find what kind of video card you should search for. Good luck.
  24. This is what I have configured. Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] © Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp. D:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>net time /querysntp The current SNTP value is: time.nist.gov The command completed successfully. D:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>w32tm /resync Sending resync command to local computer... The command completed successfully. D:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>w32tm /dumpreg Value Name Value Type Value Data -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------ Description REG_SZ Maintains date and time synchronization o n all clients and servers in the network. If this service is stopped, date and t ime synchronization will be unavailable. If this service is disabled, any servic es that explicitly depend on it will fail to start. DisplayName REG_SZ Windows Time ErrorControl REG_DWORD 1 Group REG_SZ ImagePath REG_EXPAND_SZ %SystemRoot%\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs Objectname REG_SZ LocalSystem Type REG_DWORD 32 FailureActions <UNKNOWN REG TYPE> <UNPARSABLE REG DATA> Start REG_DWORD 2 These are my reg settings for the time service try and compare yours with 'w32tm /dumpreg'. Other than that maybe a U.S. timeserver doesn't have your time on it. You might need a different server, I dunno.
  25. Norton only recommends using Add/Remove Programs to uninstall & if there are problems then do the manual uninstall that removes MOST of the program. The link is here. You could script the changes suggested in this document though. Uninstalling Norton is notoriously troublesome in many cases. http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...dSection=7&Src= Good luck...
