  1. I want to put a computer into standby mode but I am unable to because there is a digital media host service running. The computer is a host for streaming music to a media adapter so the service IS needed. The only way I can put the computer into standby is to manually stop the service, but then when I resume I have to restart the service. I am trying to figure out if there is a way that I can put the computer into standby without having to manually stop/start the service everytime. The computer is running XP Home. Any suggestions?
  2. Sorry I just don't see why "purchasing a second internet connection" would do much except make my high-speed bill double what it is now. If I wanted faster speeds I think I would just upgrade my cable service to get the higher bandwidth and only have to pay a few bucks more a month. I guess it's really designed for computers on multiple networks.
  3. Well my current configuration is I have a wireless router and the PC is connected via hard wire to the router and I have one laptop and some misc devices connected wirelessly.
  4. Or Photoshop 7.0 which you might be able to find free or for really cheap.
  5. What's up guys/gals. I've been browsing the forums for a little while now and posting a few things here and there. I figured I'd drop in and give a proper introduction My name is Clayton and I am a pretty hardcore PC enthusiast. I love everything about them; using them, tweaking them, fixing them, building them, etc. I am also a pretty avid FPS gamer - Half Life 2, MOHAA, COD, Far Cry just to name a few. I am currently studying for a BSIT degree at George Mason University (Fairfax, VA) and am in the process of interviewing for my first technical support/help desk job. Since I have found these forums I am already looking into slipstreaming SP2 into an XP Pro install disc and am starting to do some research on nLite. Hope I can contribute something to the wealth of information already on these forums. See ya around. -Clayton
  6. I've got a Asus P5AD2 Premium with dual gigabit LAN and I am just trying to figure out if there are any good practical applications for a PC that is not connected to multiple networks. The only application that I can really think of is to have one LAN for Internet access and one LAN for network access. Not even sure if this can be done. Are there any other configurations that would work with dual LANs, like perhaps dual Internet access or maybe using that second LAN for something else altogether? Just curious if I can use that second LAN for anything.
  7. I just realized that I posted this in the wrong forum. Probably should have been in the hardware sections.
  8. You can add custom locations to the places bar using TweakUi. You need to manually type in or copy and paste the location of the folder in the drop down boxes. For example, if you wanted to add a folder called Downloads that resides in your My Documets folder, you would type the following in one of the drop down boxes - C:\My Documents\Downloads -Clayton
  9. On my last XP installation with my new Maxtor Diamondmax 10 300GB HDD I think I goofed on something. I didn't load any drivers at the F6 prompt because at the time I didn't think I needed to (plus I didn't have a FDD installed). The drive was recognized and I was able to install XP Pro without a problem. However when I go into the BIOS on my ASUS P5AD2 Premium and select the AHCI SATA controller the drive isn't recognized on restart. I have to use the IDE-Enhanced SATA controller. I tested the performance of the drive with HD Tach and it appears that I am getting the read/write speed I should be for this drive. I know that the NCQ feature will not work unless the HDD is on the AHCI controller, but I am not clear if there are any other performance increases I would see if the drive was on the AHCI controller. It does bug me that the hard drive might not be functioning at its maximum potential. Do I have any other options to get that drive on the AHCI controller without reformatting the drive and loading drivers at F6 prompt? Keep in mind I didn't buy a FDD for this system. Advice? Suggestions? Thanks, -Clayton
  10. Well I don't think you can disable it completely, however you can make it appear to be gone by setting it to auto-hide. OR, another option is to right click it, uncheck lock the taskbar, and resize the taskbar so its not visible. I guess you could do both so when in auto-hide and mouse over that area just the small line will popup. You will still see a line though.
  11. Interesting. That screenshot I posted with that taskbar was from a guy who said his PC came from Dell exactly like that. He didn't download or skin anything. Not sre if it came directly from Dell or not though. Thanks for the info - I have been trying to find this theme/style for a few weeks now. For those of you who want to check this out also here is what you need to do: Get theme here: Energy Blue Then follow these directions: Directions
  12. This is a little late I guess as I just starting browsing these forums recently. I can give your logo the effect you are looking for. Let me know if you are still interested.
  13. No its not a skin. Did you look at the image I posted a link too in the original post? The taskbar is exactly like the regular taskbar except it has a different bevel effect. I believe Dell is shipping thier new PCs with this new taskbar style. Anybody else seen this on a PC without any skinning apps?
  14. Well I have not used one personally, but they got a really bad review by Maximum PC. If you want a good modular PS, check out the Antec Neopower. It does not have sleeved cables, but if you buy it from frozen cpu they will sleeve the cales for a few dollars. For me the sleeved cables didn't matter becaue I don't have a window on my case.
