  1. How many processes do you have with that config? An image of the processes tab in taskman would be nice to see. To temporalily get even lower you could kill explorer too. Wasn't there some project where someone had managed to remove the GUI (replace it with a commandline-interface) to make it extremely slim?
  2. I've relocated the "My Documents"-folder in a similar fashion to what you've done and it works great. Just like you I didn't like the way the folders are deep down in the "Documents and settings"-tree. Also to make it easier to administer if a computer has more than one user i combine all of the "My Docs"/Favorites/Start menus, it's ok to do so since most people using the computers (in a home) don't have any problem with that. Some apps do have a fixation to use the default names, but for those (rare) cases i just let them do it (like your C:\Docs\My Videos). I use the "My Documents"-folder only for the most recent stuff. I keep the old stuff in some other "archive"-folder on another partition since I don't need to access those files very often. Keep the old files separated from the more recent ones and you'll save quite a bit of time when you don't have to scroll through long lists of files every time you need some specific file(s). A rule of thumb when managing files is to not just let them be and think that "I'll organize them later", instead get a habit of doing it every now and then. All of a sudden you'll realize you've got thousands of files and then it's almost too late to try organizing them. Somewhat related is the fact that you should make regular backups of the stuff you like to keep, better safe than sorry (harddrives won't work forever). Recordable DVD's (and DVD-recorders) as well as harddrives are cheap these days so it's wise using them to make frequent backups.
  3. If you disable quite a number of services and the other progs running you'll end up with something like that. I haven't tried if it works good in the long run (just testing out Vista before I'll make the switch), but it may very well do. My XP has 13 processes and works very well and has done so for years.

    Windows Server 2008?

Why people doesn't use server OS:es as their main OS is mostly a matter of cost. If you've got the money or in some other (legal) way have the opportunity to use the OS instead of Vista you may very well do so, I probably will when I buy a new comp later this year. But the info on missing BDA support was nice to know, do you have any more such info? I think that's basically what the thread starter an others hare would like to know: Are there any more reasons why you should not use WS2k8 as your workstation OS?
  5. On the topic of using Win Server 2008 as a gaming/workstation OS there are lots of information available if you just do a simple search for '2008 workstation' or similar.
  6. @HellSCream: Read this one if you haven't already.
  7. Which kind of computer are you using it with? I've seen similar problems when the computer has some kind of problems with USB, it's usually either something with the drivers or the port is not USB 2.0. Older computers, some laptops and USB-hubs only have a few or no USB 2.0 ports, the ports may instead be USB 1.x (1.0 or 1.1). Some cheap USB 2.0 drives are not compatible with earlier USB-versions.
  8. Yeah that's true, but what he wanted was to be able to boot from the CD and gettting to the boot menu would solve that.
  9. Have you tried hitting the F-keys, like F1/F2/F10/F12 or Del/Ins at POST (or when you see the logo)? That should do it if you hit the correct key at the right time, you'll just have to try a few times. I saw a few other suggestions: -Download some software or a bootable floppy image for your specific model from the manufacturer's support site. If some information on the HDD is required then is has to be available for download somewhere. -Unplug the HDD and give it a try without it. I don't have anymore suggestions right now, you could try searching for it. When you find the correct solution please post it here in case others have the same problem.
  10. I agree with Travis, all of them! You should develop a habit of checking for updated drivers every now and then (but you don't need to do it very often). Keeping your PC malware free, defragmented and making sure you have all the latest OS updates are other things you should do on a regular basis (which you probably knew already). Don't forget to update the BIOS/firmware for your mainboard, DVD-drive, router, DSL-/Cable-modem or any other hardware where you can update it.
  11. You're welcome. Those small ones can sometimes be difficult to spot, but since the two copy commands where the only ones that had something to do with quicklaunch it had to be one of them...
  12. You're missing a \ at the end of your first copy command.
  13. The file "last session.ini" is used only when creating the nLited iso/source, not during installation. You can run a batch from a floppy during installation if you like to. Read the parts about batch scripting and adding users in the MSFN Unattended Guide. Basically you make a batch that calls another batch (on the floppy) and run it from cmdlines.txt.
  14. After reading this thread (and the links in it) I've gotten more interrested in having multiple smaller monitors rather than a large one. Maybe 3x24" or 3x27-28", or maybe a combination of 1x27-28"+2x24".
  15. Get to a folder? You mean go to another folder from where you currently are at the prompt? Look here, here and here. Making your own special installation is not by any means considered basics and is not recommended for beginners. There are lots of other things you should learn before you even think of trying this. What is your native language (where are you from)? We may be able to direct you where you need to go to read about things in your own language. It might be easier to learn one thing at a time, not trying to both understand the language and the subject at hand.
  16. There are not always easy ways... Making your own customized installation takes a lot of effort and some knowledge, but you'll probably learn something too. Where exactly is your problem? How far have you got and what do you not understand?
  17. It depends on which games you want to play. Games made for Windows will often work quite good under XP, old DOS-games are a bit worse. Here's one DOS-emulator, search and you'll find more. Some games are playable with XP if you select compatibility mode in the preferences for the game/its shortcut.
  18. Ok may be old info, since I haven't been following it too closely (the details) in the last few months. Earlier on there where talks/rumors that IE7 and WMP11 would be integrated in the final version of the SP but not in the betas/RC:s, but apparently they changed it in their policy. Dang I didn't even know that one. Thx for the info. I used to have it there 'just in case', but it's listed on many places as an outdated tweak so I removed it.
  19. I haven't tried SP3 yet, but the title of this thread made me curious (maybe I wouldn't have to find out all of them myself). With just a quick glance at your tweaks I found these: Internet Explorer 6 crashes: SP3 has IE7, so it may or may not be valid. Your AppTimeouts are a bit low, programs may terminate when they're just busy. Force DLL To Unload From Memory is an old tweak. As you say there are lots more tweaks than you've got, if you don't understand one just search for it. Just to brag a litte, my tweak-file is about 5000 lines (sorted alphabetically, trimmed and tested) with no descriptions and hardly any unnecessary blank lines..
  20. You mean the game "Pinball"? Never heard of it and sounds highly unlikely, why would a game be required for that?
  21. You should've read Yzöwl's post first, it's the 4th post above yours. You simply cannot undo a regtweak, unless you have some kind of backup (previously exported key, restore point). If you know the exact tweak you've set you can change it back, but you have to know where it is and what it was set to. You can also export the key from another computer and apply it. Use a virtual machine and apply your tweaks in there if you're not sure. Apply them one by one and backup the key they're in before applying them. Regtweaks and the registry is not that easy if you haven't worked with it and know only a little. In many places (magazines, websites) you can read warnings about editing the registry, in some cases they have a valid point in that. Some of us have been configuring/tweaking and working with the registry for many years...
  22. Putting the monitor in standby is already in the power options yes, but that wasn't what I meant. What I meant was the option of using standby rather than a screensaver as the first step (Set screensaver to run: Standby), then after the set time the system would perform the action selected by the user.
  23. Interesting comments, keep 'em coming. There seem to be many people who'd rather have two smaller screens (17-20"), but maybe that's because very few has used 27"+ monitors? There's a limit when it's getting too big, but where is that?
