  1. add -extreme to the vlite shortcut. "C:\Program Files (x86)\vLite\vLite.exe" -extreme
  2. hey, i just updated to vlite 1.1.6 final from the RC and suddenly the same config which used to work (by work i mean add role/feature wasn't broken) isn't working any more in the final. is there any specific change which might have broken this. i do understand that 2008 isn't being supported (for reasons i don't comprehend) but i am ready to help test in anyway i can. i was before this happened trying to make a complete list of stuff which broke add role/feature. thanks
  3. the benchmarks reveal that disc and memory/cache access is much slower in vista which might mean vista is writing/reading from the disc a lot more in the background. could be indexing could be superfetch could be anything. might be worth it if someone took a bare bone vista and compared it to barebone 2008. then the real numbers would be apparent.
  4. had already seen those links and many more thats why i tried 2008 in the first place and now that i have tried it and viva-la-difference. well my company would probably move to 2008 as client systems from the current xp sometime in the near future. i know there is a large cost difference but if it helps productivity the cost can be overcome. a lot of people would be trying 2008 especially since their trial lets you run for 240 days. also 2008 disc size is just ~2gb compared to vista ~4.3 gb and still it takes twice as much disc space (plain 2008 install takes 12 gb) once installed. which only means there are a lot of duplicate files, not installed stuff resides on the hard drives. also i just tried to install .NET 3 on a plain vlited install and it didn't install is this what means breaking the add role/feature. earlier i thought the utility crashed and didn't show up the feature list.
  5. i think i made the installed disc space to 4.3 gb from 4.6 gb which is actually too much work for too little gain. also make me wonder what else is present in server2008 coz vlited vista sp1 (preintegrated) takes about ~2gb space. (both 64 bit) as in server 2003 adding removing roles didn't require the original disc meaning all the files were present on the disc i think the same thing is there in 2008 so i was wondering if/how i can remove all the stuff from the hdd which i might never use. all those server stuff. i was thinking maybe waik did that but if i am gaining only 300 mb after removing just about everything it probably isn't cleaning it all up. something worth looking into. also on a side note 2008 running in VM ( 1gb ram ) on my xp machine was more responsive than my xp (nlited very lite). :-P. i understand i was running a lot of stuff on xp then but still compared to vista running in that same VM it was multitudes faster.
  6. deleting pending.xml worked
  7. i downloaded the waik for windows 2008 and vista sp1 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en also the pkgmgr i am using is on the Server DVD sources\6.0.6000.16386_amd64\pkgmgr.exe also i am doing this on Server 2003 x64 if that is a problem EDIT: i just ran this on Server 2008 x64 still the same error. what's the version of your pending.xml
  8. so wim is clean except for the registry hive thing done to it.

  10. is doing pkgmgr /up the same as passing in a answer file with all those components removed.
  11. just on a side note those two batch files could be one bat file like this CALL up Microsoft-Hyper-V-Common-Drivers-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.0.6001.18000 GOTO :EOF :up start /w pkgmgr /o:E:\Work\WimMount;E:\Work\WimMount\Windows /up:%1 /l:log echo %ERRORLEVEL% %ERRORLEVEL% %ERRORLEVEL% %ERRORLEVEL% %ERRORLEVEL% %ERRORLEVEL% GOTO :EOF
  12. hi i am not sure if in waik i should select the rest of the packages to uninstall or just add these. i want to remove the maximum number of packages. * i don't want Aero * i want the option of adding desktop search (indexing) later on. * i do want Office/Visual Studio * i do want to play games. * i do want to remote desktop to and fro from this computer. could you be a bit more specific about how to remove packages from waik. i have already done the registry/hive part. now i have opened waik and opened the modified wim and a new answer file. what do i do now. how much more disk space can i gain over simply vliting the original disc. (my vlited 2008 x64 uses about 4 gb disc space with a working add/remove without using vlite with extreme flag) thanks my vlite file [Components] ;# Accessories # Accessibility Speech Support Wordpad ;# Drivers # Display adapters-Ati Display adapters-Intel Display adapters-nVidia Diva Server Modems Printers-Apollo Printers-Brother Printers-Canon Printers-Citizen Printers-Dell Printers-Diconix Printers-Epson Printers-Fuji Xerox Printers-Fujitsu Printers-Generic printer Printers-Gestetner Printers-HP Printers-IBM Printers-Infotec Printers-Konica Printers-Konica Minolta Printers-Kyocera Mita Printers-Lanier Printers-Lexmark Printers-Minolta Printers-Minolta-QMS Printers-NEC Printers-NRG Printers-Oce Printers-Oki Printers-Okidata Printers-Olivetti Printers-Panasonic Printers-QMS Printers-Ricoh Printers-Samsung Printers-Savin Printers-Seikosha Printers-Sharp Printers-Sony Printers-Star Printers-Tally Printers-Tektronix Printers-Wipro ePeripherals Printers-Xerox QLogic Fibre Channel Adapter Scanners TV Tuners-ADS Technologies TV Tuners-ASUSTeK Computer Inc. 13. Nah, we are testing this at hardware.no at the moment, at it seems like if you have a vlited Vista SP1 which seems more or less identical with a Server 2008 the Server 2008 still is quite a lot faster.. No idea why, but it's seems like it's something with Server 2008 that makes it faster than Vista SP1 even if you have a extreme light Vista. do you have any article/test/benchmark or something coming out which shows this in cold hard numbers. @kalim my whole point is to have a stripped out vista and not have all the junk enabled in the first place. Also this post kinda got out of hand. what i meant to ask was which services/apps/stuff do i absolutely need in vista/2008 to play games and games only. i will strip off everything else.
  14. well in the case of xp over 2000/2003 it used to get regular updates to add compatibility modes for games/apps but they usually used to be games developed for 95/98/Me so not sure if that is still the case but got reports as to CoD4 crashes in 2008 but it also used to crash in vista which they fixed with a patch (compatibility patch??) since this will be a totally stripped down version it shouldn't be any slower than stripped down 2008. PS: also i was looking for recommendations from users for what stuff not to remove to allow games to be played
  15. hmm and are games properly compatible. windows 2000 had some compatibility problems which they solved in xp by adding compatibility updates EDIT: also searching online it seems Vista SP1 is almost exactly like 2008, with some server stuff enabled and ui stuff disabled. now if i disable everything in vista it would be same as 2008 with everything disabled. also 2008 seems to have the same compatibility issues with games.
