  1. As Shark007 said, it's most likely x86. To use the "pause"-button (sometimes named "break") on a laptop (isn't it a laptop?), you may need to also hold down the "Fn"-key.
  2. Do you want to have another program to do your file management or change the appearance and/or function of the Windows shell? There are kind of two different "Windows Explorers", the file manager and the shell. Therefore we aren't quite sure what you really mean and want, hence the different suggestions posted by others. The term "Windows Explorer" is most commonly used when referring to the file manager, and if that's what you want then there are a number of options: xplorer² ("Pro" version is not free, but "lite" is) ExplorerXP (Free) And as GrofLuigi already mentioned, probably the most well known one: Total Commander (Shareware=you can test it for free)
  3. The old, real DOS. Those were the days, hmm... (getting nostalgic) What are those numbers after LH /L: in autoexec.bat, something memory related?
  4. Something similar would work ok, without quotes and skip "for", or simply just use "vista"'. You can also search by KB-number if you know it. Combining this one with Windows Update and using it instead of searching the download center makes it useful. WUD lists all updates/hotfixes and is better if you don't know which ones you need.
  5. This: MOVE "%UserProfile%\Start Menu\Programs\Firefox\Firefox.lnk" "%UserProfile%\Start Menu\Programs\Internet\Firefox.lnk"or shorter: MOVE "%UserProfile%\Start Menu\Programs\Firefox\Firefox.lnk" "%UserProfile%\Start Menu\Programs\Internet\"Moves only the shortcut for Firefox, not the folder it's in (nor any subfolders). While this: MOVE "%UserProfile%\Start Menu\Programs\Firefox" "%UserProfile%\Start Menu\Programs\Internet\"Moves the folder (including subfolders) and you won't need the RMDIR command.
  6. It reminds me of WUD, but WUD is easier and more foreseeable to use. The information on whether or not a hotfix has been replaced by a newer one is finally there, you couldn't find that in the KB-articles! If I understood the FAQ correctly you can now download hotfixes that are not publically released (=obtained only by contacting MS), is that right?
  7. Using fixed or reserved IP:s may speed it up quite a bit, but that may not be an option in this case?

    Chipset

I'm glad you found it and solved your problem by yourself.
  9. That's really old school!

    Chipset

@ stoes.Be: To be able to help you we need to know what your problem is, why do you want to update your chipset and what do you mean by that? Do you want/need: Better performance? More stability? More overclocking options? Support for a new CPU (=processor)? Your onboard devices (USB, storage controllers and system devices) to work? To remove the red and yellow icons in the device manager? To simply update just for the sake of it? What exactly do you want to update: The BIOS, the chipset drivers or the chipset?
  11. Some people may get very offended by bad words for some reason. Personally I don't really care much as long as the numbers of those words are kept reasonably low (some people use such words excessively, which just proves their limited vocabulary). If everyone would behave and conduct themselves we would not need any censoring, but that’s not always the case hence censoring is a necessity.
  12. Yeah I know, but stressing the importance of the video card when it comes to FPS-games doesn't hurt (as you know, far from every new PC has a descent vid card). Even if the topic starter doesn't come back, it may give others in a similar situation something to think about.
  13. It very much depends on the computer specs, you can forget about newer games if some of the specs (primarily video card and CPU) are low. Especially shooters (often called FPS=first person shooters) are quite demanding on your system. Older games use simpler controls and may therefore be easier for beginners, playing games on the PC is a slightly different experience compared to playing on consoles (most people would prefer to play shooters on PC). F.E.A.R. won't work very well with a simple video card meant for office use.
  14. Yes indeed, it sure is a great program. Good luck in your future use of the program and other things.
  15. @Martin H: No problem man, I just provided some additional info on the subject to clarify it even more. @Kayra: No offence but I'm not quite sure what your problem really is (the one you mentioned in post #3). Can you please answer these questions; we may then be able to help you better: 1. You do know what nLite is for (removing components to create a new source, not uninstalling anything from your current installation)? 2. When uninstalling nLite, did you make sure the nLite folder and ALL files in it were removed (which is not always the case)? 3. You removed some components and finished the process, next time you did it some other components (ones you didn't select for removal last time) didn't show up in the list anymore? Like Martin says, an unmodified source is recommended. Doing all separate tasks in nLite completely at once may also be better than doing them partly (=remove a few components, then removing some more next time from the same source). Always remember that the entire nLitening (modifying a Windows source) it is a complex process, so keeping it simple and doing it slowly and step by step will often result in fewer problems.
  16. Edit: Oops, double post.
  17. @Martin H: That's true, a better term in this case would be a "plain", "vanilla", "clean" or "no-SP" XP source.
  18. @Kayra: Have you already removed those components or have you selected any compatibility options in nLite? They will hide some components to protect them from being removed. I've also heard some recommendations to use a "gold source", but I've never had any problems using either SP1 or SP2 discs. A disc with MS-integrated SP:s has fewer files, but you should expect MS to know how to make those discs correctly.
  19. I get that error message too, but also a few others with lsass.exe. They say something about: -system resources -virtual memory (It's alternating between those three I think.) In my first try I didn't integrate KB928090 (must've missed it when downloading the hotfixes), then I've tried integrating both versions of it separately one by one. I've tried with both VMWare and real HW, but the problem still remains. I'm using the latest version of nLite and XP Pro.
  20. If you change the reg setting, it won't cause any problems since the files aren't actually renamed in any way.
  21. What Stoic Joker said is how to set the way folder names are shown, my suggestion is for renaming them.
  22. I use Rename Master to quickly rename multiple files and folders. It's a single .exe-file. You may have to change the view option to "folders only", by default only files are shown.
  23. Looks ok in the screenshots, will try it. There are a few similar programs out there.
  24. Read the entire MSFN Unattended Guide and you will most likely get answers and maybe some more ideas on what can be done. You can combine large parts of this guide with nLite, as many people (including myself) do.
  25. I agree with Ponch and very much doubt there are any resources used by them. In case it would be, then it wouldn't matter very much anyway. What are you trying to acheive by disabling them? You should have in mind that some mainboard components are considered ISA and use IRQs, but those should not be disabled (such as system timer, real time clock, IDE-channels).
